I hope you enjoy this little something a bit different to normal! I'm always trying to push the confines of format in little ways, but this one called for something a little more dramatic. This is not an indication of the direction of future videos and we will be back to relative normality for the next video. Which coincidentally is also about Final Fantasy!

You MUST continue doing this. Every time KZbin sends me a notification about a new video from you, i just... feel so happy! You're really inspirational, not because you say interesting things or help me discover something i didn't know about music and videogames but... the way you tell them it shows HOW you REALLY love them. Music is so important for me too, in videogames, in life, and i totally know how it feels when you think that your life is, well, garbage and ugly things like that. But you MUST persevere, going on, because you make something really unique, in a unique way. Sometimes i feel that designers or game makers consider music and soundtrack the last wheel of their car, but i believe that descriptive music, leitmotif, etc. are SO much important than that... and you, man, you totally embody my thinking, saying with words what i feel about wonderful games with their wonderful music. Thanks, and stay tuned with the future, going with the pace of your heart!

55 seconds in and I'm almost in tears. What you describe here is exactly how my childhood was and how much I was drawn into FF8 and wanted to live in that world. I always fantasised about living in Zells house, and how I would take the train to Dollet to get to my favourite place in the whole world, Fisherman's Horizon. Once arrived I would step out of the train and smell the fresh sea water and watch the seagulls in the sky fly by while the view slowly pans down revealing FH, and the music starts to play.

Thank you so much for this video. I remember as a kid got so blown away by the cut scene of that blue, huge solar panel underneath a big moon, and spent so much time in FH talking with all of the residents, enjoying the music and atmosphere, imagining myself living there a lot of times. FH is my happy place, i guess. It leaves a really profound impression on me even after so long...

Hey thanks for opening yourself with us, bud, that was great! I loved FF8 when I was young as well, the story of the angsty, lonely teenager Squall resonated with me, the people they met, places they visited have always been in my memory, perhaps I was too young to read between the lines at the time, but I like to look back and make sense of the things I never quite understood about this game, and about myself. To be depressed is to witness all of the meaning in your life be stripped away, everything seems shallow, you don't feel joy in anything, your sense of identity dissipates, your hopes, wants, all gone, there is nothing that matters, nothing that is worth doing, it's a struggle to endure it, but it's thanks to places like Fisherman's Horizon, to games, fantasy and escapism that you can find some form of peace, and once you find that peace, you can work towards discovering who you are and what matters to you. I sincerely wish you the best going forwards.

I now understand why you were hesitant about making this video bc it's such a huge (and personal) leap from everything else but I absolutely love it. Knowing the writer helps put their work into more perspective even if they do a great job of being objective and I'm thankful you gave us a peek through your lens. This has actually inspired me to go back and think about the games and soundtracks that were just as formative for me, as someone who's been having a hard time enjoying games since the whole adulthood thing happened. I'm sorry things didn't work out the way you hoped they would, but I'm certain life will take a direction you could not have expected for the better. Keep it up 👌❣️

Yeah it's really beautiful, I remember learning it for a music thing at school and I would just play the slow left hand (around 30 seconds during the piano collection) over and over, so much so that I would be tapping it on my leg during other lessons :D I love blue fields too because its so fun to play, Have you heard Eternity or Wind Crest from the ffX-2 piano collections? I think they're my favourite songs even though I've never played ffx-2 lol

I love hearing what different songs inspire people- I know for me, the theme for Balamb Garden itself is very soothing. FF8 was one of the first games I ever bought for myself as a kid,a nd even if I never finished it (I bought it used and the second disc was scratched) The music still meant a lot to me. And hey, you're doing great, you'll be all right.

Balamb Garden is arguably just as peaceful sounding as FH. I love it too. 😍 My discs are so scratched from overplaying (and probably poor care as a child!) Disc 3 struggles right near the end as you enter Lunatic Pandora, and disc one freezes whenever I try to play Triple Triad. That ones a travesty, honestly. 😉

Final fantasy 8 is a true gift to those of us at that age when it came out. I wish more people of all ages interested in video games gave this deeply artistic experience a chance. I remember seeing the commercials and not being able to tell if it was for a movie or a video game. If it weren’t for that game I’m not sure I would still be into video games to this day. It truly reinvigorated my love for games after the slim release lineup for the N64 month after month made me almost completely lose interest. It got me to experience a lot of other beautiful experiences as well. All of Squares offerings on the PS1 deeply enriched my life - Chrono Cross, and Final Fantasy Tactics especially. On a side note since you mentioned reading: It was 4th grade for me when I got to try this game and it deeply increased my reading speed, comprehension, and my appetite for reading in general.

I just spent another half-day trying to learn OpenMPT, and getting far enough to get MIDI input working and recordings happening... and then I had to stop. My energy was just gone. I know I need to keep at it, but there's so much to learn and as I get older, I feel like I've fallen behind everyone, and it's overwhelming. Then I found your channel, and found this video. Talk about just the advice I needed! I'm so happy you've found success, and so happy you were able to share it; it means a lot to hear it from someone who's found some degree of success. I'm busy making my way through your archives, finding little bits of inspiration left and right. Maybe I'll dust off these old composing hands and break through this block I've had. This was such a brave and personal little video. And I can kind of relate to it. I've felt "at home" in some videogame worlds before (the most recent example being the Akkala region in Breath of the Wild) and while I'm lucky enough to have enjoyed at least relative mental and emotional stability through most of my life, I know where I can go to "find myself" again if I need to. And knowing that other people besides me would dive back into games for that, or even just little parts of them, is incredibly validating.

Thank you for this video. So great to hear from someone else who loves video game music on the same level I do. I also have a deep, personal connection with FF8. I was 18, and just starting college. I was very alone and depressed, and Final Fantasy 8 was my escape. Like you, I didn't just play the game- I imagined myself in that world. I spent all my time playing (missing a lot of class), and even when I wasn't playing, I was walking around campus, listening to the soundtrack on headphones. It helped get me through a tough time in my life. Glad you're getting help with anxiety- we all need that sometimes. Keep up the great work!

I've nothing deep or terribly thoughtful to contribute. I just want to say how wonderful it is to finally have you talk about one of my favorite RPG's with one of the best soundtracks ever made. And this track, too, is one of the ones I used to play over and over after buying the album. Even today, after two decades, I know it by heart. I have to admit, though, even though both places have this particular track it always made me think of Winhill more than FH. I've always found the peaceful tones more fitting of a small rural town out in the country than a hulking metal monstrosity connected to a bridge in the middle of the ocean. But that's just me.

Thank you so much for sharing this part of your life. It's very relatable. I started to get choked up by the end. I never got to play FFVIII as a kid, but fell in love with it all the same. The music more so. Fisherman's Horizon for you is what Balamb Garden is for me. And thank you for reminding me how much I like FIsherman's Horizon. I've now added it to my lullaby playlist (which also consists of many other renditions of various video game music.) Cheers!

Although I don’t have the same experience as you with this track, I absolutely understand what you mean by it feeling like “home”. It is one of those tracks that just absolutely, flawlessly embodies a sense of peace and tranquility and warmth, without compromising its own identity. It’s honestly a brilliant composition - probably one of my all time favorite Uematsu compositions - especially in the sense of what it can make people *feel* . A big part of my love for the FF franchise comes from its music - and really, that franchise needs to be seen by every other individual in the gaming industry as the textbook for how important good music is in a game, especially in that music is the key to pulling the player in past their disbelief and to become fully immersed and actually *feel* the world of the game. To be perfectly honest, Uematsu isn’t even my favorite FF composer, but the way that he is able to absolutely embody the spirit of each moment in pretty much every FF game he scored is transcendental. FF (1-9 especially) just would not be the same without his music attached to them. Fisherman’s Horizon is a shining example of this.

Wow, what an insightful and personal reflection of feelings for one of the best themes in any video game. At the time I played FF8, I was living in Key West, Florida and as a seatown that's disconnected from the mainland USA, I truly felt something familiar as I explored the town. There were the obvious connections; such as being surrounded by the ocean, containing businesses and ideals centered around the preservation of resources and well, the connection to fish and seafood, which just so happens to also be Key West's staple food source and economical draw. FH resonated with Key West's disconnection from violence and war, the ability to unite and harmoniously live together as one community ("One Human Family") and of course, the overall love for the town that we all feel as residents there. Everyone knows everyone and we all get along for the most part. We all just want to live on our beautiful little island in peace, surrounded by loving people, the ocean and those great Key West vibes. Once I heard the song, I would venture around outside, along the beach, quiet downtown areas and listen to it a lot. Even my little sister takes a liking to it and for the same reasons! If you ever get the chance to visit our own little Fisherman's Horizon, I highly recommend it! Key West is gorgeous and filled with many things that will immediately draw a link between the two aesthetics. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and I hope you become successful in all your endeavors!

Right there with you! FF8 is the best. The FH music still chokes me up when I listen to it. I love ff6,7,10,12, Tactics and ffbe as well, but 8 will always have a special place in my heart.

FF8 is one of my favorite games of all time and the music in Fisherman's Horizon has also been one of my favorite tracks from the game, but I never really noticed before just how much meaning the music can have. I've rarely tended to focus on video game music past sorting through "that one track that played during that part that I liked", but your channel has helped me have more of an appreciation for the scores that accompany my most cherished games, so I sincerely have to thank you for the heart and effort you put into your videos.

FH theme and "Breezy" are the best town music for me. There are a lot of "town soundtracks" that Ive heard but these two tug the most heartstrings for me. Makes me wanna retire in a fishing town or mountain village

That’s fun KZbin suggested me your video, some coincidence I’d say; Final fantasy music, especially the 8th has changed a lot in my life. Especially this one, that i was playing in my room to feel more like home, during the night. I didn’t really think about why back then, I didn’t keep thinking about why I love this music so much, now you put some words on this music :) I really should play this game again.

I'm so glad you made this video! Fisherman's Horizon theme has always made me feel an emotion I can't describe, and it's so intense that it makes me cry everytime I hear it (even the crappy midi version from the Steam version lol) and your video helped me to understand it a bit more and also to think about some stuff in my life as well. So thank yoy so much for opening up and sharing your thoughts with us!

Wow, this was not the video I was expecting, but it may have been the one I needed...You telling us about how you've been feeling recently, and how even just one particular song helped you pull through is inspiring. I hope that some day maybe I can find a song that effects me the way that Fisherman's Horizon helped you.

One of my fav songs of FFVIII, I would just run around so I could hear the song, or if I needed to stop for a moment and do something, I'd head there so the music would play. If we ever get a remake of this, it'll be so beautiful to see in HD.

I feel you. I have some songs too, that are especially emotional to me. Conveniantly named, one of them is "Song of healing" from Zelda Majora's Mask. It is literally a song that heals me by soothing my mind. I love the soundtrack of FF VIII too

Thanks for this video - FFVIII was a huge gateway for me when I was 14 to a world of games that showcased a human story with epic scope. Fisherman's Horizon has long been my favourite piece of music in FF and brings back such a wave of nostalgia attached to the angst of that time of life and the intensity of the story followed by the sudden slowdown and reflectiveness of that part of the game. To me FFVIII has such honest and sincere emotion that I don't think has been matched in the series (and it's difficult to find other examples outside of FF). As an autistic person the emotional honesty of the story made it very easy to connect with and that's actually quite rare. The music is a big part of that.

It's utterly impossible for me to emotionally disconnect from these songs. I revere the music as masterpieces and barely want to know what other people think of it. Even tho if I got the chance you can be sure I'd stuff my enthusiasm regarding Final Fantasy music down your throat ha-ha! Thanks for sharing these thoughts and feelings, clicks with me and probably many others. Very comforting that we're not alone in it. Well met brother.

Your a beautiful human :) Keep up the meaningful work on this channel! I have struggled personally with mental health issues for as long as I can remember. I'm 30 years old now... But I still remember playing FF8 very much when it first came out :-) I had forgotten the Fisherman's theme until now, but the nostalgia brought me back to the calm after the storm that was that damn garden getting uprooted. Good times!
