Well actually they were titans that created/dreamed up the gods, The two titans, Arun and Shara are the creators of Arborea, who basically fled their old home/universe, made their own place. Their tears formed the seas and their bodies became the continents. Their breath created the winds and their minds dreamed up all manner of creatures and plants(the 1st creatures being the 12 original gods) and the 12 gods are the ones who made the races you play today. sadly ironically enough Tera has a-lot of lore and store (even have background lore about multiple past wars) it just most people just seem to really not care about the lore at all. the people playing and the people not playing

The combat is fun, the graphics are great, but there's just so much lacking in substance. Not to mention the leftover player base just seems to stand around the main town all day. Literally, every time I went back to that town everyone was still there. Just sort of idling in a dying game.

I hear you, and I'm a dood who's been playing the Console ports, which are usually a few updates behind. I remember the old storyline having you take out the Argons, and then explore the "Lost Continent"... now you go to said continent before finishing off the Argons. Gameplay is wonderful. I took both a Gunner and Valkyrie to endgame, and even dipped into Brawler territory at least once. Sadly, it's once you hit endgame and have to traverse the same dungeons over and over for that slim chance to get the needed materials for upgrades where Tera really becomes a slog. The flying missions are pretty fun to do the first few times around, as are the other related repeatable missions, but after a while it becomes a chore.

The people who made Tera really had talent. The mobs were some of the coolest I've seen in an MMO. I still remember to this day a specific mob animation. It was a dwarf mob riding on the shoulders of some giant mob. If you staggered them, they would both fall down. The dwarf would get back on it's feet first; smack the head of the giant to scold him and then get back on his shoulders. so many great moments like that. The most unsettling thing about tera, is how they made quality of life changes, but left the NPC's in the world that use to provide the functions they changed. Before, you had to talk to your class mentor to upgrade and unlock new abilities. So there's a massive building with 1 of each class mentor just standing there. You can now just open the skill menu and unlock skills and upgrade them anywhere. However, these npcs are still in that massive building and you get a prompt to talk to them, but they don't say anything or serve any purpose. The world is filled with npcs that use to do something, now they are just empty vessels that for some reason they still let you "talk" to them. I'm pretty sure there's a repair npc, that when you talk to them they say "you need something repaired? I am your man." Then the dialogue CLOSES and he doesn't repair your gear, because now you just repair your own gear.

To be fair, this is something that has happened to MOST MMOs because... I guess the target audience went stupid and complained too much? This happened to WoW back in the day too. There were class trainers you would have to go to to level up skills and quests that each class would have to do to gain new skills at certain points in the game. All of it removed and just spoonfed to you because people are lazy. Takes a lot of the immersion and RP elements out of the game and makes it feel half-baked.

Same. When TERA first dropped, I had an absolute blast playing it. I've tried other "action MMOs" throughout the years like Blade & Soul and Black Desert Online, and none of them grabbed me like TERA did. I think that is because TERA didn't remove the holy trinity, so doing a dungeon felt both familiar and unique at the same time. Playing a Lancer tank versus a Warrior tank was entirely different playstyles (damage mitigation versus evasion) and I absolutely loved both of those characters. There are 3 MMOs that I would sell my soul to have back in their original format (launch day fresh, no cash shops, no boosted leveling, and no power creep), and those are Star Wars Galaxies, Wildstar, and TERA, in no particular order. We all stopped dead in our tracks and stared each other down for a tense few seconds before I summoned my mount to make a quick getaway. However, they immediately knocked me off my mount with a well-aimed shot. I was fighting them for a solid 20 minutes, trading blows with them, back and forth. Eventually, I was able to beat both of them because of the excellent action-combat system. I simply outplayed them, despite their numerical advantage. Stats be damned

I loved Tera when it came out. I got it Physically and everything. It's nice to see that other people think that solo dungeons should be a thing in MMOs. I've had to Solo most of the MMOs I've ever played (either friends weren't available, queues were bad, or internet was trash), and I tend to prefer to take things slower so I can soak up visuals or enjoy lore in the games I play (which means I'm everyone's least favorite dungeon companion). MMOs really need an option for dungeons that just lets the average person go in and enjoy them on their own time without requiring to either handhold somebody or be dragged like a comet trail through the instance, just enjoy the content. Also Michael Hogan sounds completely stoned doing these lines for this character.

@@kyokoyumi Respectfully disagree, I think BDO combat is quite amazing and looks pretty but is way too fast paced, which makes combat look like a blur. Tera managed to hit a sweet spot with combat where as when hits register you get the feeling that you are doing considerable damage but if you are not evading accordingly you could take a lot of damage yourself, sort of like dark souls. I got into Tera just after it initially went free to play, waaaaaaaay back during the Enmasse era. Quit somewhere between Reapers and Gunners. I went back this past week just out of curiosity and nostalgia and... I barely recognize the game I left. I was literally just reminiscing with an old friend of mine who played the game with me back then and how bad it is at present so I'm not surprised to see it here. The original story such as it was has been absolutely gutted from what I hear, with huge swathes of regions and content having been nuked to compensate for the power creep and increasing level caps. A lot of the wonder and adventure we all shared going through our first dungeons, when BAMs were actually threatening and only a few classes (or very skilled players) could take them on alone are just snoozefests. Went to a (at the time) top level area to fight a bam with my undergeared lancer just to see where I stood; I three-shotted it. There's no gear variety. No buildcraft. BIS 'legendary' sets like Visionmaker are a thing of the past. Battlegrounds? Lol. There used to be a robust roleplay community at least on a few of the servers (Celestial Hills xD); it's gone. There are currencies within currencies, vouchers within vouchers, boxes within boxes. I thought GW2 had a currency issue, but my GOD does Tera take the cake. My friend said it best, "It now plays more like a flashy, glorified mobile game". After playing GW2 for the last few years and all the QoL and alt-friendly stuff it has going for it, Tera has a lot of inconveniences that bother me more than they did back in the day. About the most amusement I've gotten from it was looking into fishing... until I learned it is just another giant rng goldsink. The very next day people had figured out how to bum rush it and it was completely brain dead. Killed what ever erge to play I had.

Yeah, it's changed a lot since then. I mained Slayer for a while and I remember the second area kicking my ass when I thought I could solo a BAM that wasn't a Basilisk. All you need to really do is look at the quest log to see how much got removed; instead of being level 20 and having 5 different main quest chains you could work on, you've got one that's only relevant to get the leveling done and making the sidequests useless. That's why the last time I was playing it I got bored after running a solo version of the first dungeon and seeing that the stuff I'd been either deconstructing or literally just throwing away was the same crap I was picking up in the dungeon instead of the Rare items that were the entire point of running dungeons; I'd hate to log in and see what the inventory of my level 65 Slayer looks like. Even without talking about monetization it's a shell of its former self; anything I found interesting is dead and buried at this point.

I remember back in the REALLY old days where Berserker was actually a tank, and I loved playing Slayer so much because of the gigantic sword you used. I never even got to max level in that time despite how long I had played for, and came back to it when Reaper was released and stuck around for a little while before again quitting. Then I came back when Brawler was released and that was the longest period I had stuck around for because I was a part of a big guild by that point and where I discovered my LOVE for Tanking, especially with the Tera combat system. It was so fun to actually be a part of a guild, but I was also equally devastated seeing how much the game was changing around that time period. So many systems and areas were already being forgotten about at that point. After quitting for that final time, I did come back one last time sometime after Ninja was released and almost immediately stopped playing within the first day. It was at that time I realized Tera was a shell of its former self, and having only just learned a week ago the game officially shut down last year, it only further depresses me. I still have not found an MMO like it, and I'm fearful that I never will again in my life, despite how much I love FFXIV as well, it's just not the same at all.

One thing you missed was the extreme amount of resources needed to rank up in the middle end game and beyond. End game is just the start, then your first couple of rank ups for your gear are no big deal. But once you get to the middle rank ups you start failing a lot and then you must grind endlessly to rank up every piece of armor and jewelry as well as your weapon. When you have multiple classes, each one of them makes it even more extreme. hundreds of hours of grinding just to rank all your gear to the next rank.

Yeah my heart broke when I saw how much of the original content (from when cap was lvl 60) has been simply abandoned. Even in the beginnings of 65 it felt like you had two games to play and actually playing through was enjoyable. So many beautiful locations, an actual engaging storyline. Times when no one drove past you on a flamingo with rainbow afro with a surfboard on the back. To your list of gripes I would add that the game's endgame revolves entirely on its max level cap. When level cap was 65, a 64 level character was infinitely weaker than someone just one level higher with basic gear. But...it will stay in my memory. Fightning Shandra Manaya, or completing Sky Cruiser Endeavor Hard Mode for the first time (when it actually mattered), Dreadspire...sigh.

One particularly comical note about the story of TERA: The plot of the first area (after the tutorial) is actually one of the *only* stories that matters at endgame, because in the plot if the expansions, it’s revealed that all of the events of the main story were orchestrated by that one god who was worshipped by the cult from the first area

Meh. It's an example of how it's important to save and multiply actual content instead of continuously cutting it and replacing with monetization options and other seem-to-be-easy money grabs (khem, elin classes&fashion boom, khem). They've probably made a bit more money at the point, but they've killed the game. And now Bluehole stuck with basically nothing, they've kinda missed their chances both on TERA and PUBG. And Elyon seem to be dead on arrival, in 2021-22 it has no selling points at all.
@gsczo2 жыл бұрын
Needs both to be honest, New World the perfect example of a game with "good atmosphere" and doesn't have good combat or anything else and it's dying at the speed of light. Games need everything to stay alive for a long period of time. And make no mistake, TERA is considered OLD by now, whenever this game came out it was a BIG and the gameplay was intense as hell, you've never played any other MMO with skillplay and challenge like TERA because that doesn't exist, and personally that was a reason why the game was losing playerbase initially because it wasn't for everyone, they reached late game and couldn't handle a lot of stuff if they weren't good enough. The devs of course changed a lot of stuff but the game was never the same anyway, except for the people who played for Elins, yeah, Elins are a big reason for that game to stay alive and probably still is.

Sadly they did butcher low lvl zones. Not sure why devs do that, they could just scale mobs or something, and not make it irrelevant. But it could be worse. It could end up like Lineage 2, where they made first 85lvl pointless, as you lvl up to "End Game" in 30min max. What's the point? just release me at lvl 85. Tera was one of my favorite MMOs back when it was P2P from En Masse, and was like, "THE" MMO to a lot of people, even if it was a few years old (since we always get KRPGs years later) and yeah, it had you run all over the world, had no flying mounts, one of my favorite moments was just exploring the world with a friend and trying to jump over game walls. I remember the big dungeon at the time was the one where you start off in kinda a tropical area in front of a big mansion, fight a mid boss to the right and drop coconuts on it, go through a hedge maze, fight a bullet hell mid boss, fight 2 mid bosses next to some fountains that you had to go into and dodge rolling logs, and the big boss that needed the cannons to stagger and would insta kill you as the screen goes black if you didn't kill it fast enough. Fast forward a few years after it became F2P, but not far enough where the starting area has changed, it was still pretty, but I noticed all the side quests have vanished, "Did I miss something? I remember going over that way," I thought to myself. It became extremely linear so I decided to quit. Fast forward again, new starting area, I believe it skips the entire original starting area. Combat was still fun, playerbase was near non existent, and even more "story" was cut out. I don't believe that dungeon was even relevant anymore.
@MissZerglot2 жыл бұрын
The new starting area did remove the old starting area. I too initially played on the Island of Dawn (?) I believe it was called, and it was a *real* grind to make it through all of the quests to get to level 10-11 and make it off the tutorial island. A couple of years later they cut a ton of content from the starting area and you would level up to 11 in less than 20 minutes, then came the new starting area / introduction. I really miss the old Tera.

You didn't mention one thing that has bothered me about Tera the most: the attrocious performance in some areas and dungeons. That was the main reason I quit it. @xliedxfunx2 жыл бұрын
Since they made the client 64bits instead of 32, you will notice some better loadings, but let's be honest the engine is old and not optimized.. When there's a hundrer people appearing on your screen, you'll inevitably get lower performances. Even with the latest i9/ryzen and an rtx 3090 there's no difference with your gaming computer from 6 or 7 years ago. Not sure you'll get 5fps in your mentioned zones unless your computer is still old or if you have no recent dedicated graphic card. But the FPS varies a lot, always.

@@xliedxfunx I'm not talking about hundreds, I'm talking about an empty zone. And I'm also talking about dungeons with anything more than 5 people. There are games on the same engine that work way better than tera does, so that's just an excuse for the garbage programming.

Hearing you explain everything that went wrong with Tera makes me realize that the exact same thing happens to so many mmos... It happened to maplestory which i'm waiting for you to do a video on still and so many other games that offer things like 2x exp items and things such as gear that levels up with you to a certian point making anything else up until end game useless as well as making it so much easier to get EXP now that you out level quests and don't stay in spots for long enough to experience them, making the only locations you actually remember being the endgame ones... People remember mmos fondly back when they first came out BECAUSE it took long to level and you had to grind to get strong or find good gear, which in turn lead you to explore literally every map or part of an mmo. Nowadays these same mmos all have crazy events on constantly that will have you leveling up fast and getting really good gear fairly easily, cutting out all of the grinding until endgame.

I returned to this game a few weeks back, after 3 years. Starting again, so many things have changed. The leveling experience is F A S T. I didn't mind that at first but slowly but surely I started remembering how much more time I had spent in the past, exploring the world and actually connecting with it. Yes, TERA's story IS irrelevant later on, but the story itself is not half bad. There is substance to be found in it, and the same goes for SOME but NOT ALL sidequest lines. There are some area specific quest that are more deep than you could ever ever imagine, if only you pay attention to what the npcs are saying. IF they slowed down the leveling up AND connected the story in a way, the whole main and side story of TERA would actually be something to write home about. As for the combat and the aesthetics, boy is it incredible. Everything looks, sounds, feels and plays out incredible. TERA is fantasy through and through and I love it for it. It's just that good in that regard, that's all there is to it. Whoever designed TERA, and whoever designed the combat system were very good at what they were doing. Insanely so. Apart from that, I found out that they removed some dungeons and that made me so sad. Red refuge has been removed. Do you know the story behind red refuge? When you arive in Castanica, there is a whole side quest line that involves the hungry caverns, a place where the human-eating Gulas thrive upon their attrocites. Everybody there is scared, disgusted and furious about the situation. Among the many quests involving the Gulas, there is one that basically goes like this (it's good, I just cut out everything in between to make it short): Go to a guy in the caverns and give him orders, he tells you to give a letter to his little sister, she gives him a good luck charm, he goes on with his mission, the gulas abduct people from castanica, his sister being one of the prisoners, he goes to save her, you find out about it, you go find them, he died valiantly, you avenge him and save his sister, she is sad and vows to become a soldier like him to protect the people and kill the gulas. That same girl that YOU saved and knew finds out about the wrongdoings of the Federation, killing innocent Orcs, and forms the red raiders, and their base was the RED REFUGE! There are some really good scenes when you ender that dungeon and there used to be so many fanarts of her and her lion friend in the loading screens. AND THEY REMOVED IT! All I want to say is that this game still has potential, it can still be brought back to life. The story can be patched so it is coherent and important, Annie, that sweet sweet girl who we became friends and had a tea party with should be brought back, all the dungeons should be brought back and with a few more things perhaps, TERA could be one of the best mmorpgs ever. If only they would show the game some love. I know I shouldn't keep my hopes up but how can I not? The game CAN be brought back to it's prime and even more! But reality is often dissapointing, and the slow withering ember that is called TERA breaks my heart, but still I hope that one day, the flames will burst once again, brighter than ever.

Agreed. I made multiple characters so I remember running those dungeons. The story might not link up enough but it certainly got me emotionally attached to it. Here's hoping the game is able to pull itself back together.

Tera is in a top 10 list of MMoRPGs in Japan, so despite all of its problems, it's still one of the better service games you could play, which says a lot about the plethora of other, more-recent games.

TERA used to be an amazing game with actual lore and gear progression. The dungeons used to be awesome and super fun. You had 10 man raids back in the day to play with and your gear could be kept and used throughout patches. Enchanting was much simpler back then too. The costumes and mounts used to be not as immersion breaking as they are now. Enchanting gear used to not be as bad as today either. You actually had people to play with back then too! But, the team working on TERA either quit or were fired I think. EME went downhill because they had to bend to their parent company's wants, which was maximize money and do nothing else. The game rarely got bug fixes for some stuff in the game to this day, assuming it wasn't fixed but most likely not. The current lore team probably has no idea what to do with the game since the whole previous team is gone. It's become nothing more than a gear treadmill with some new cosmetics once a blue moon. A lot of the bosses and dungeons are reskins now. The lore is completely fucked beyond repair. The game has been on its last legs for awhile now which is sad to see. I loved this game as a teenager and I really wish they would just let it go instead of keeping it as a cash cow at this point. I really, really miss TERA but the current one isn't one I know nor love anymore. My characters may be there but my heart just isn't in the game anymore. And I don't really have an MMO to call home.

15:59 Ulfric Stormcloak. Some here in Helgen call you a hero, but a hero doesn't use a power like the voice to kill his king and usurp the throne. You started this war, plunged Skyrim into chaos, and now the Empire is going to put you down, and restore the peace.

I remember TERA was an mmo I tried when I was a teen. Even I thought it was way over-sexualized, but I did think it was nice that for once it had a race that the males wore almost no clothes too, the succu/incubus race. I liked it then just forgot about it completely midway though the forest town.

We need more games that objectify men too! Equality

Yeah, male characters in MMOs always seem to wear bulky armour, and here's TERA with its high elves and castanics with their chests full on the front, it was new and probbaly the only game I actually wanted to play as a male character of those two races

Oh man the nostalgia.... I played this in 2011 or 2012 with my school friends after getting bored of Vindictus. Cool seeing QOL like flying mounts and solo dungeons, and also seeing classic stuff like that Basilisk BAM fight basically unchanged. The cash shop was always over the top, but stuff like the car or spaceships definitely are beyond anything I saw! (Edit: Made this comment before hearing about all the lost zones... That sucks 😭 I remember the magical puppet clown school thing too)

Ah, Vindictus, that's a name I've not heard in quite a few years. Me and my wife at the time were in the same boat as you, bored of Vindictus so we tried Tera and, for a good long while, it was an amazing game... But as always, greedy mentality makes for a greedy grave. It's unfortunate to see this game going the way it is, I tried to play it recently and, after 40-50 minutes, I logged out and uninstalled it again. Dead world, dead content, dead game.

I had very fond memories playing TERA..I messed with it a bit back in the day and played it fully once it hit the PS4. I had a blast experimenting with the combat systems of each class and i didn't mind the grind so much. What killed the game for me was a certain zone had serious map issues as I couldn't figure out where I was on the map and did a lot of guesswork that got me nowhere. I took a break from it and heard certain bugs were fixed so when I went back to it..nope same problem...so I hung the game up. The potential was definitely there and it's sad to see the game shut down eventually. Wasn't a bad game but it wasn't great either.

Tera had the absolute best combat system I've ever experienced in an MMO ever. I remember trying many MMOs during the time and kept returning to Tera. What killed Tera for me was actually my potato PC that made it impossible to do well in high level dungeons. I solo'd a lot of content as a result. Thanks for this trip through time. Would love to see your take on Wakfu, another game with fantastic combat mechanics albeit turn based.
@richanater992 жыл бұрын
Having a better PC actually didn't change much. Tera is a 1 core processor game, meaning even if you have a really good CPU, it's only ever going to utilize 1 core, making even high end PC's struggle to run the game properly. bottlenecked by the CPU. you would need a CPU with good single core performance.

@@richanater99 I returned to TERA to say goodbye and that was not the experience I received. I'm running a Ryzen 9 3900X, the game was amazingly using all my 12 cores at the same time (30 to 40% usage on all cores), while also using near 10 gigabytes of ram in Velika (5 to 7 outside of the city), my RTX 3070 while not in 100% usage was always on the 40s to 60s. And I do agree with you that it should be impossible, there's no way Unreal Engine 3 could use so much CPU, but nevertheless it did and I saw it happening in both HW Monitor and the task manager from Windows. If it uses that much hardware it's truly one of the worst optimized games of all times, I never saw anything like that, not even Cyberpunk 2077 is so hungry for resources.

I miss TERA. Was it all cosmetics? Yes. Did I play an Elin with a maid outfit? Of course 4 out of my 5 characters were Elin. Did I make entire spreadsheets to track my progression on the "All My Life" Achievement so I could get the red raptor mount? Hell Yes. Did the tutorial area back in the old days take hours upon hours or even days to grind to completion? Also yes. But I miss the gorgeous landscape visuals, the monsters, riding around on my mounts and exploring, the amazing times I had while playing the Baby Kuma and Corsair's stronghold end-game minigames. I miss sneaking into high level areas to get the tourist trap achievement at a low level so I could get a watermelon pet, and I miss playing this game with my friends.
