Growing up in LA, then moving like an hour East, I really appreciated Norms more. I was like happy when I’d go out to LA on a night out and end up there at 3 AM, it was a treat. When they finally opened one up in my neighborhood, I was so hyped, and realized that a lot of people felt that way about it, idk what it is, but their steak is amazing, especially at 3 am when you’re plastered.

“McDonald’s breakfast sausage.” 🤣 Finally we have a reference for explaining the flavor of American breakfast sausage to Brits. Chicken-fried is an adjective. Chicken-fried steak is like schnitzel made from cube steak instead of veal. With the seasoned batter like fried chicken and some cream gravy, probably peppery. Biscuits are definitely not scones, however much they may look alike to the British. They don’t have to have gravy, though that’s certainly one of the tasty options. They can be eaten warm with some butter spread and melted inside. Or with jam or honey or molasses etc. Or as a breakfast sandwich with ham or a sausage patty or a fried chicken fillet or some pork tenderloin or a piece of breakfast steak (possibly chicken-fried) etc. Don’t save pancakes, crepes and waffles for Mardi Gras. So many kinds of hash browns.

Just a note on the quip you made about cockney rhyming slang. The reason that it was used was because the slang made it harder to understand what was being spoken about, not because it made it faster to say, so you are right that apples and pears is harder to say than stairs, but if you are out of the loop then you won't realize they aren't talking about fruit but where the valuables in a house may be for instance.

My late dad used to love the bone-in ham at Nicks. Their home made salsa is spicy and delicious. I go for the uber tasty corn beef hash, also made in house. Horrid coffee though, every time

Nice work gentlemen. A US breakfast is excellent! If you go into a lot of cafes and restaurants for breakfast in the U.K. you’ll get American style pancakes. Syrup and bacon is a popular topping.

@@mrxman581 my issue with places like Norms (and even smaller diners too) they don’t make the pancake batter frequently enough, the gluten in the flour starts to develop and then the pancakes are tough. Never had that at the Pantry.

A1 steak sauce was actually originally British and was popular in Britain in the late 19th and early 20th century. It was exported to the US around then, took off there and, for some reason, faded out of the UK market.

@@lucinae8512 I definitely had meatloaf at school in Britain but it was disgusting. Don't know if it has much in common with what you get in the States. Seemed more like something from the days of rationing (we used to get quite a lot of that sort of thing -desserts with condensed milk...)

I think you guys need to come up with a rating system. Ambiance: 1 or 5 or 10 Price: 1 or 5 or 10 Each dish: 1 or 5 or 10 Service: 1 or 5 or 10 ...and then find the average scores or each place and call that the winner.

What are you on about Harry, we do know what "over easy" and "sunny side up" means in the UK. A vast majority of greasy spoons do English breakfasts with a sunny side up egg, more commonly called a "dippy" egg which you can dunk your fried bread into. Posher cafes and pubs tend to fry the egg on both sides or over easy.

It’s refreshing to hear that they still give refills in LA. That’s the way it is MOST places, but here in NYC, most restaurants now don’t want to give you refills, they’ll either limit it to one refill per person, or they’ll do it, but grumble hatefully about it the entire time. It’s still wild for me to get used to, because growing up in the south, I’m used to places bringing you refills faster than you can drink basically lol (which I prefer).

I suspect the free refill vs paying for each serving had something to do with how rationing lasted in Britain for many years after WW2. In U.S. rationing ending pretty quickly and the economy took off like crazy.

Shreuve Tuesday is actually celebrated in parts of the U.S. as Fat Tuesday, largely around historically Polish communities and the Pennsylvania Dutch. (It’s also an alternate name for Marti Gras in some areas of New Orleans.) Instead of pancakes, we eat donuts called Pączki and fastnachts, as well as a hard-fried dough covered in powdered dough called Cruschiki. (The availability of those varies wildly based on where you are, but you can find all of them around Buffalo.)

Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday. The "shrove" part refers to confession (see definition of "shrive"). Churches typically wouldn't offer confessions for the first few weeks of Lent, so you would go to have the priest hear your confession while the sacrament was available. The pancake angle comes from an old custom the Church no longer practices, but has remained as a tradition. Traditionally, you were not allowed to cook with butter, tallow, oil, shortening, or any other fat during Lent, so on Shrove Tuesday you would finish off all the fat you had in your pantry, and one way to use it all up was to eat lots of pancakes.

reminder that texmex (or any US side mex combo) generally happened because all mexicans living in what is now the US, after the war of 1848 was given immediate US citizenship, and many of the recipes are adaptions of Mexican recipes to the locals now living in the area.

Not that clear cut because in Arizona and California you also have true authentic from Mexico restaurants. Many of which were opened by native born Mexicans. The Los Angeles region has tons of fantastic authentic Mexican food from every region in Mexico. And that's true for other cuisines from different countries like China, Korea, Japan, Philippines, Iran, Peru, and Cuba among others.
