I was like, "Oh, everyone is talking about it" but, really, Amanda was talking about it and a bunch of people listened. They should add a "special thanks" to her in the credits. Yeah, I agree. I want Max to have survived, but I think that Mia was now in a "state" where she could see the "living realm" and the " spirit realm" at the same time but hadn't adjusted to it.... being freshly (spoiler) does seem like it WOULD be an "adjustment", a "shock" even... I think Max didn't hear Mia not because he pulled off a miracle ( though, again, I hope he did) but rather Max wasn't going to be stuck hanging around this hospital because he had places to be. (AVOIDING bringing religion into it)... I think the "'Roo" or as I have been known to say "kanga" also did not "hang around". The Hospital Scene was Surreal, and ambiguous, but after 2 watches I am pretty sure that some people died and wound up in limbo because they let things go too far with the game, and others because of stuff they'd done before they.... moved to limbo. The sneezing thing with Mia I felt was there to slyly introduce all the issues with "water" maybe? I mean the drowned lady , Mia's mom locking herself in the bathroom. AND the spirits ALL looking drowned. I DO remember Mia's mom telling Mia that spirits can trick people by taking on the appearance of others, hence the tragedy of Max. There are a couple things I want to work out as I do act professionally, but sometimes without the script you just have to make a choice and stick to it. Plus, I mean... 3 tickets in 8ish days is borderline obsession.

I just love how the movie ties up even it's throwaway lines. At the end, Mia is summoned by the OTHER (right) hand that was referenced earlier in the film. "The other one is just out there," I think Haley said. You can tell because she grabs it with her right hand, while in Australia, everyone shook with their left. Also her right hand has a ring on while her left hand is empty. I'm pretty sure the left hand was "destroyed" since it was still in Mia's house during the hospital stay. And Haley and Joss said Jade could burn it for all they cared (before they escaped their time in the plot). Since the hands came from the same medium, they share the same spirit domain which is why it shouldn't matter which hand was interacted with.

I noticed that Mia was also holding onto the hand when Riley was talking to her "mother" too, as someone else pointed out. Something else is that she was the one in the group that had trauma of losing a loved one, therefore easier to manipulate. Ghosts/ spirits and demons attach easier to those who are sick (Riley sneezing) and those who are hurting (losing her mother). When she went over the 90 seconds she could have tethered more to their realm and made Riley's connection stronger when she touched his hand during his turn. Or I could be completely wrong and they'll explain it all at a later date. Movie was great though and I kinda like the "let's talk about it like it's a book club".

Spoilers: 11:50 From interviews with the boys there was originally an intended hellscape scene for Mia which was scrapped in favour of the limbo/darkness option. I'm 99% sure Max died from his injuries as the elevator that he takes goes up implying Max is leaving for Heaven whilst Mia is instead stuck in Limbo like the other ghosts as she refuses to acknowledge her death and died whilst possessed by the drowned spirit implying they "have her now." As an Australian I can also testify to how accurate the film is at portraying Aussie youth, I'm so happy to see positive reception overseas as our particular mannerisms don't often translate well to folks not familiar with them. The Kangaroo that Mia sees is almost certainly dead as well, being there as a trick by the spirits to draw her mind back to doing what was the "right thing" and calling on her to do it to Riley, not realising what would happen if she actually succeeded. Roos of that size most definitely do not survive collisions, full grown ones are a different story but that one was far too young, you get pretty used to dragging them off the road in rural areas unfortunately.

My take is that watery ghost/ fake mom is always there, even when Mia is connecting to the hand-she’s just taking a back seat while Mia has a more immediate connection with the current hand-ghost. Like putting someone on hold while you take another call. There don’t seem to be concrete rules about how many ghosts can torment your soul at a time once you’ve crossed the 90-second threshold, though; there’s a whole clown car going after Riley’s soul in the netherworld (assuming that was real and not an entirely fake vision served up by the drowned ghost). I love that this is such a question though! It’s part of the fun of this movie doing something so fresh with the possession concept-I think we all feel like we know what the rules are for your bog-standard demon possession plot but this is much more unpredictable and unclear, and that makes it all the more creepy and exciting.
@26349 Жыл бұрын
I also thought that the vision the little girl showed was fake, and the little girl itself was fake as well. Could have been another malicious spirit shape-shifting to look more innocent, could have been the drowned victim shapeshifting for the same reason; and the horrific vision with souls tormenting Riley in purgatory could have been an exaggeration to push Mia to put the “kangaroo”(Riley) out of his misery, so the ghosts could take his soul or something.
@imsleepy6211 Жыл бұрын
@@26349 I also think the kid was a lie. The concept of being allowed to enter a ghost to see the spirit world doesn't really sit right, but that just might be my own logic. This movie really effected me in a personal way- so much so that I walked out of it. I felt like a lil bitch doing it- have never walked out of a movie before in my life. However, to make a long story short- my mom passed in a way that is eerily similar to how Mia's mom passed, to the point where one or two details mentioned offhandedly match up exactly. I also have a younger brother that I am very protective of, and who I have seen once self harm in a way similar to what Riley does while possessed. I didn't make it past that scene- actually had to replace my headphones, vape, and sunglasses because I left them in the seat when I ran. I only didn't leave my phone because the stair lights happened to go out in the theater I was at & I needed the screen light to see. No joke, I threw up in the parking lot. And I've been watching horror movies for a long time- gore doesn't effect me like that. And while I think this movie is astoundingly good, I don't mean to say that it's the most messed up thing I've ever seen or anything like that. It was a personal thing. And also the pretty girl who sold me a ticket was outside smoking when I threw up, and saw it, so now I can never go back to that theater again lol. All this to say that I had a feeling Mista GG would cover this, and not only was I excited to hear your thoughts on the film because I feel like your criticism lines up with my own opinions often and makes me think where it doesn't - but because I want so badly to know what happens in the end! Those people were probably laughing as a defense mechanism(or to look tough and unaffected to their peers). The scene hit too close to home for them and they were overcompensating by pretending to be unaffected and emotionless(playing tough, so to say). Usually it means there is either a heavy peer pressure or there are deeper issues with emotional regulation, which started as early as in childhood/teenagehood. People laughing at such scenes are often miserable af deep inside but can’t healthily express it and need therapy to learn how to. P.S. my screening from a couple of days ago had like 10 people(including me and my spouse), and we were all adults. Nobody laughed, nobody made irritating noise etc, everybody was respectful of others. Just depends on upbringing, age and mental issues, if you ask me.

Just one thing - I think the coughing part was just to demonstrate the distance between Mia and her father versus Mia and Jade’s mother - her dad comments on the cold but due to the distance between them (both metaphorical and literal with him being at the other side of the room and him speaking over her running the tap) he can’t help her. Meanwhile when she sneezes in Jade’s house, Jade’s mum immediately gives her a tissue. I think it was a neat shorthand way of showing how much closer she is with her pseudo-family than with her dad. But as a side note, I loved how they kept blurring her dad’s face and having them at opposite sides of the room to show visually how separate they were from each other and only managing to hug it out when her dad’s finally honest with her about her mum’s suicide note. Really tragic and really subtle

I honestly love this movie. And after seeing it, I got to thinking about the hand itself. I can't help but wonder if it's an alternate version of The Hand of Glory. For those of you who don't know, The Hand of Glory is a cursed object made by drying/pickling a hand of a murderer who was hung at the gallows. Another version of it is the hand is made into a candle, using the fat of a man who was also convicted of murder and hung from the gallows. Much like The Black Flame candle from Hocus Pocus. Unlike in the movie, The Hand of Glory is said to do three different things. In its candle form, it will only light up for the person who's holding it as well as make people who see it go completely motionless. While in its dried/pickled form, it's said to unlock any door the holder comes across. There are other stories, one being about the hand being used for a robbery in Spital Inn in North Stainmore in 1797. But I have never really read nor heard about it being a way to speak to the dead. Though I suppose something like that might be possible. Edit: After asking a friend of mine about the idea of using a hand to talk to the dead, I was told that yes it is very possible. It's a form of Nercomancy and during the olden days, the Norse would use the skulls of loved ones to speak to them. So that might be where the idea of the hand in the movie came from.

Re: hand motif When you’re struggling with a mental health issue (depression or SI like the mom, grief like mia, peer pressure or family issues like the brother), they tell you to “reach out” to someone. The hand is reaching out, like it needs human touch.

It was very good. Didn’t find it very scary personally but it was atmospheric, creepy and a fairly original idea. Also very well acted, beautifully shot and didn’t outstay its welcome. How refreshing to see a 90 minute film tell its story and not be 2 hour plus. God bless the Aussie lads that made this

Loved this movie, the detail in the hand itself was so well thought out, all of the scratching and writing to show just how long it has been passed around & that ending was just wow. Really hope to see more like this! as for wether it was Mia's mom i believe it was the drowned woman who mia connected with for over the alloted time and that spirit latched on so it could see how much she cared for riley and mourned her mother so they knew it would be easy to use him (someone who would recognise mia's mom) as a way to convince her that he truly saw her (why would she show herself to him and not mia? she had multiple opportunities) then after she forced riley over the 60 seconds to talk to her "mom" riley became a pawn to spiral mia into falling for the lies & since mia was already mentally fragile and desperate it was easy. The ending showing mia reaching totally random people in a foreign country just shows that the spirit you "let in" is random & consists of those who had used the hand before which her mom did not. Massive comment just to show how much i loved this movie lol
@selinaw.9751 Жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. Thanks for typing so I didn't have to! Like if the spirit is inside Mia (regardless of 90 seconds), it can totally read her complexes, traumas, hopes and plan how to further manipulate her. Furthermore, the "friends" who used the hand first, knew of and didn't like Mia, so I'm sure the spirits knew of Mia as a fragile, isolated, easy mark as well. They just bided their time until she came to them. I fully 100% believe that the spirits wanted Mia all along.
@kitkat6442 Жыл бұрын
@@selinaw.9751 My thoughts too. Mia told Reily about how her mom died after she went past the 90 sec mark. They drowned lady would have been there and know the weak spots enough to blind read from that conversation alone. There was also the small comment from the guy who’s brother died he said the spirits will fade with time just don’t play again. We all know Mia was holding that hand every chance she got. I also think when they tried to get Riley to play again he technically didn’t bc a big thing in the spirit world is that you have to give consent. We see this with the phrase “talk to me” and “I let you in”. That’s you consenting to talk/ get possessed by the spirits. Reily couldn’t even talk so he never played again
@selinaw.9751 Жыл бұрын
@@kitkat6442 Great point about the fact that Mia also told Reily about her mom after the spirit stayed with her! It was confirmed to the spirit multiple times that Mia's mom was source of trauma/confusion, making her more susceptible to manipulation!! THANK YOU for pointing it out, watching the movie the second time it was crystal clear that it was not her mother but the first drown spirit in the first scene. Plus the producers low key revealed it in an interview because they said, «we made sure to implement the underwater feel with the drowning sounds EVERYTIME MIA WAS IN CONTACT WITH THE GHOST » so they pretty much confirmed it.

Don't people are giving this movie too much credit. It's too slow and boring. A few good parts but that's it. How can they build tension when they ghosts are doing anything scary? Weird, yeah, but not scary aside from one scene. But it was a boring movie with too much partying and laughter and too much talking and whining. No, I want my horror movies to actually be horror. Not, whatever the hell that was.
@downbythewillow2728 Жыл бұрын
Talk to Me is one of my new favorites because they understand tension so well. Things didn’t need to be so top secret and have the current Hollywood idea of not giving actors proper scripts or anything like that; almost the entire time I knew what would happen. The second the dad talked about something the mom left them, I knew it was a suicide note. The second the scissors came into frame, I knew she would end up stabbing him. But Talk to Me understood the mental limits with a protagonist and knew how to subvert it. Time after time, I still was scared and even shocked that what I knew would happen actually happened, because I was waiting for Mia to realize. She’s our view into the world, and we’re realizing the mom is lying and likely a mimic from another spirit, so she has to. But she never does, and it makes it more terrifying that she never gets a moment of lucidity from the spirits. I also love that only Mia was affected, because I was expecting everyone to and the moment she found out it was only her was so heartbreaking
@EricSRiley Жыл бұрын
For me the whole Mia's mom plot raised a question about mental health. Did Mia's mom unalive herself because she was seeing things? Is Mia even seeing this ghost of her mother or is this a schizophrenic hallucination? Is Mia experiencing the same urge to self-harm as her mother? That's what I couldn't get out of my mind for days afterward.
@beautywhore3360 Жыл бұрын
Mia saw things only after the hand so I’d rule out schizophrenia. Mia’s mom had no contact with the hand so maybe it was just mental health and depression that pushed her to suicide. We’re told that the hand plays tricks on you in many different ways so I wouldn’t believe any hallucinations through Mia’s eyes about her. The last thought I have about it all is that if the hand is projecting a dead person and the dead person hasn’t died because of the hand, then it’s a trick the hand is playing to pull on your grief to get you to let them stay. I think the ending with Mia being summoned proves that.
@paolaochoa6250 Жыл бұрын
SPOILERS***** The first time Mia tries using the hand she goes over the 90 second rule that's why she continues to see the spirits specifically the one she let in that was bloated from decomposing in water. A character says the spirits can pretend to be others/can deceive you" can't remember exact wording and spirits in you lose power as time goes on so it's a spirit pretending to be Mia's mom that's why she looks so different at the end she is bloated and wet just like the spirit that Mia let in the first time she lost her power to look like Mia's mom as time passed. This is also confirmed by Mia being told by her "mom's spirit" that she did not commit suicide but her dad reveals she left a suicide therefore it's an evil spirit pretending to be Mia's mom. I think maybe Riley's spirit was never in danger and instead the spirits possibly deceived Mia into seeing it so that she would be motivated to take him out of his misery just like "Mia's mom" kept urging her to do.
@btmdth8843 Жыл бұрын
@paolaochoa6250 this is correct, they say that if you die with the spirit in you they get to stay, so they wanted Riley to die to trap his soul and manipulated Mia to do it so they could get 2 souls
@downbythewillow2728 Жыл бұрын
I agree, I think that in the sense of the movie’s intention it was the spirits messing with her sense of reality but it’s very interesting to consider the possibility of paranoid delusions. Mia’s mom follows this very well in the third act, directly telling her that her dad has been replaced somehow with a fake and the hallucinatory dad attacking her being an instance of “people who want to help you are coming to hurt you”, which all feeds in a conspiracy delusion about how the mom couldn’t have died by suicide and there has to be a big explanation of it. I wouldn’t say it’s the actual explanation, because Jade and Hailey feed so heavily into the idea that it feels weird if it’s a delusion, but it’s very fun to analyze the movie in that lense
@lettiewilliams6389 Жыл бұрын
the way i saw it, yes her mum definitely suffered from a some form of psychosis. as mental health issues run in families, i think mia was 100% susceptible to developing psychosis as a result of using “the hand”, which i’m pretty sure was a symbol of drugs abuse. i mean the whole film is a symbol of drug abuse and addiction and how it effects the younger generation. the fact there’s such thing as using the hand too much (overdosing?) and when the brother of the previous victim said the only way to stop being tormented by the spirits of the hand is to stop using the hand but mia couldn’t stop because she was addicted to the hand.

This is one of the very few movies, maybe even the first, where I felt every second that ticked by. When it comes to other films, time seems to pass at a faster rate. Not this one. Watching this, it felt so much longer than it actually was. You really become immersed and *feel* every moment. It captures your attention for the entire runtime while tricking you into thinking it's doubly as long as it is, just because it makes every second count. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

I just saw this last night, and I loved it! I was hanging on every second. The pacing was so good, and there wasn't a moment when I felt like someone was doing something just for the sake of driving the plot forward. The tone of these kids playing around like it's a game was perfect. It didn't feel heavy handed. It felt like that level of fearlessness and irreverence that teens genuinely have. And the whole cast was fantastic. I think you're right that it started out as Mia's mom, but then was the drowned lady imitating her. I someone in the comments say they thought it changed when Mia touched the hand while Riley was possessed, and that makes a lot of sense. My favorite part was the scene with her dad after he reads the letter and she storms back to her room. The tension was ramped so high for that, and it was paid off so well. Phenomenal movie, and one I fully plan on buying, which doesn't happen much anymore.

7:44 my theory is that when the actual hand is being touched, the connection is strongest and the spirits have the ability to fully control the victim, but i don’t think they immediately gain control after the 90 seconds is up. In Riley’s case the spirit(temporarily) gained full control, but only after going wayyy over the 90 seconds. With mia it only went on an extra second, which could mean that the spirit only has a limited hold on her. I think every time mia used the hand, it’s less like the drowned woman is getting “pushed aside” and more like she isn’t fully there in the first place, i think she’s lurking, watching mia and waiting for her most vulnerable moments to fully apear

*Spoilers* The ending was kinda open to interpretation as to how Mia fell into traffic. I saw it as Mia got pushed by Jade (the friend) to save her little brother. She saw that Mia had stabbed her dad and she knew she would harm her brother too. Mia getting up from traffic confused as a ghost and not knowing she was a ghost till the ending kinda confirms to me that she had no intentions of sacrificing herself by jumping into oncoming traffic. This move was very well made and I can’t wait to watch it again (when it comes to streaming)

kenny jd (another movie reviewer) slowed that scene down and you can see at the edge of the frame Jade pushing Mia. Also I don't believe Mia would have jumped to save Riley. She's demonstrates throughout the film that she's a selfish person, not a selfless one. If we use the obvious comparison of the roo at the start of the film, she doesn't leave it because it might have a chance of surviving, she leaves it because she doesn't want to deal with the discomfort of ending a life (even though that means the animal will suffer directly because of her decision). She chooses her own comfort over the roo's. Not only that but she truly believes that she's helping Riley. She doesn't hesitate in the hospital room because she's having second thoughts about whether the spirits are telling the truth, she hesitates for the same reason she hesitated with the roo; ending him makes her uncomfortable. So she carts him to the highway so that someone else has to deliver the final blow by hitting him with their car.

There wasn’t a famous demon or anything, it was a plethora of spirits and all looked horrifying. There’s an artist on Instagram that makes very interesting artwork and I wish they expanded on limbo. If you change over time in there and the yellowish scenery but blueish bodies. Why was there kids? Idk but I was under the assumption that limbo was for lost tortured souls but now I’m wondering if there’s more requirements to pass on and that in itself makes me grounded in real life. The sfx was way too good and real it made me nauseous. I felt like I could feel their pain. I could go on forever I am just so impressed
@selinaw.9751 Жыл бұрын
The humans only "thought" it was limbo/purgatory. I think the hand/the malevolent spirit(s) attached to the hand have their own domain specifically tied to the hand for trapping people who use the hand. It would appear that, based on the ending, only those who died while the hand's spirits were in them get stuck with the hand forever. I'm also pretty sure that spirit wasn't a child at all. In most hauntings, child sightings aren't ever actually children. They're a mask. People tend to trust children more, so I'm sure the evil entity took that form to further manipulate Mia and show her the tortured vision of Riley that likely wasn't true.

There’s something to be said for a movie that may be something I’ve seen before, but it’s done insanely well.

MASSIVE SPOILER WARNING: For all the book club members i think that it was her mom absolutely when you go to hell you get desperate and lonely that's why she made her kill her dad so he could join her and then she could have mia too But mia went to limbo not hell so she never got her in the end And her father went to heaven with the elevator Im willing to fight that my theory is correct

I actually just saw this last night because of your tweet about it and am so glad I did, I can't remember the last time I saw a horror movie in theaters that had me so on edge and nervous. GO IN BLIND, seriously, don't look at anything, if you haven't started this video and you want to see it, go see it first.

i kinda see the ending as a metaphor for when addicts become isolated, when their loved ones can no longer be in their live because they are a danger because of their using. when Mia said "please don't leave me here" is like how addicts crave the people they care about but cannot escape their using. She is stuck in this limbo only to have moments of connection when shes "using" the hand

Talk to Me was just such a good movie!! I'm so glad you liked it GG and it was amazing to see more genuine Aussie's in film and not have this movie just be jump scare galore.

My Theory on the ending was that while Mia was hesitating to throw Riley into the street Jade had run up and pushed Mia into it instead. For me this could explain why she doesn’t realize she is dead in the hospital and can maybe explain why Jade doesn’t bother to look at the street rather focusing on her brother after the accident.

I went in blind and I absolutely loved it. My reading how the drowned lady came back to Mia, is in a blink and you'll miss it scene when Riley is possessed and Mia leans in to talk to her mom, she touches the hand.

Best horror movie of the year really isn't saying much. Yeah the film is good but it feels unfinished, so many important things just were left out. I like a bit of ambiguity but this film could have benefitted from being longer. It felt rushed and it didn't leave the impact on me it should have

I also felt like all the characters just kept on getting dumber to move on the plot, Mia was an absolute brainlet, but what really ticked me off was how all her friends knew something was wrong with her but just kept on forgiving and trusting her.
