its actually inspired by nightmares. Kyle ran a website for a few years where he recreated peoples nightmares that they sent to him. Skinamarink was supposed to be a creation of all the most common tropes from every nightmare he'd read. It's suppose to be a nightmare that everyone can relate to having in some way. Being a kid, being alone, being vulnerable, and something is out to get you. EDIT: HAHA omg, i did the same thing when kaylee looked under the bed, and i said outloud "i haven't blocked the screen in years but wtf is this!"

I actually really enjoyed Skinamarink. To me it represents kids going through their parents' divorce. The window disappearing was the fact the kids were stuck. The father left and the mother became severely depressed and became "the monster" and possibly abused the kids. It also reminds me of being kid and feeling alone in my house and how scary that could be. I liked it because it wasn't like anything I had seen before and I really appreciate when a director goes outside the box of traditional film making.

I had read that the 'lost at home' experience from the kid's POV was meant as a metaphor for how they felt alone and afraid as a result of their parents intended divorce. The mother when she appears on the bed says something along the lines of "Your father and I love you very much..." which is the cliche intro to the "...AND we're separating" conversation. Regardless, this was a 90+ minute panic attack with zero breaks in the tension. One of the most visceral reactions I've had to a movie in a LONG time.

@@rickwrites2612 yeah that thought crossed my mind too. But general rule of thumb in movies (from what I've noticed) hallucinations or generally people that aren't actually there will never communicate or really interact with other characters on screen outside of the one that is hallucinating. Imo if the sister was only speaking directly to kevin I'd say it checks out. But the fact that she was doing things like standing guard for Kevin while he was asleep, going upstairs and communicating with the "parents" like actual back and forth dialog, it wouldn't make sense for her to not to be real. Or at least as really as anything else happening. And if she is real it's even less likely the two would be sharing the exact same hallucination at the same time specially considering Kevin was the only one that got hurt. I could definitely be wrong tho 🤷🏿♂️ that's just how it's rationalized in my mind.

I think what made _Skinamarink_ so terrifying is the fact that many of us _can_ relate to that feeling: The feeling of being alone in your own home and especially at that young age. My game theory is that Skinamarink is one wild allegory for divorce and the way it impacts children. You can tell the parents are falling out of love in the way that the dad has no urgency in the way he speaks to his wife his four year old falls down the stairs and is rushed to the hospital, when the mom speaks to Kaylee. More specifically, “Why is Mommy crying?” “I don’t want to talk about Mommy.” my theory is that the 572 Days bit refers to how long a legal separation takes, and the torture that comes with that. The monster represents how two adults fighting and screaming every night and how that hostility indirectly affects the way the kids see the house. What used to be familiar and comforting is now violent and unforgiving. As a child of divorce, this film felt familiar in a way that I wasn’t expecting.

As someone into Analog Horrors, this sounds pretty interesting and I'll definitely be giving it a watch when it comes out officially. While the addition of jump scares sounds kind of obnoxious to deal with (I don't hate jump scares in general, but throwing them in in a slow paced, quiet horror film like this makes me think of those old "turn up your volume" video pranks), I don't mind the slow burn nature of Analog Horrors and while I doubt I'll get what's going on this movie, I think I might still find it interesting. It kinda sounds like a more dramatic, artsy version of "This House Has People In It" Also, is it weird that I've never heard of the original Skinamarink nursery rhyme? It was equal parts frightening and sad, she’s doing what she’s supposed to, but no one is coming to save them. I think ultimately it would have been tighter as a short film, like 45 mins max, it does start to drag on after a while. But I’m glad that it exists, I love seeing directors who are willing to take the genre in new directions. I watched the first time on my phone screen bc Im Baby, but once it does get a proper release I’ll definitely watch it again and support the director.

I will say it's quite interesting how the response from the short film heck which is like 30 minutes and is quite similar was quite positive but it was also around 200k views so it found the audience that could relate to the feelings these things were meant to reach while skinamarink is a 2 hour film watched by way more people and a wider variety of audience possibly not reaching the audience who could relate to the feelings it was trying to convey about being alone in the dark as a kid

i watched this the first night covid descended on me, on a bunch of cold medication, and it legit scared the shit out of me. It was punishing, and I was so relieved when it ended. No it wont be for everyone, or anyone, but it tapped into some primal childhood fear, and reminded me of The Navidson Record from House of Leaves. I love it, but I hate it. And i can't wait for it to be officially released so I can support it. The part when she's in the wall gave me the same shock scare as Lake Mungo and I had to pause it just to catch my breath. 8:14 makes me laugh so much, I had the same reaction just creeped out all the way down to the core. I have a theory that the movie is actually a metaphor for Kevin being in a coma from having fallen down the stairs and maybe even unfortunately gradually dying. Also maybe you could give the short movie "Heck" a try, by the same director of Skinamarink, pretty much a shorter and earlier version of it. Thanks for the laugh dude I needed it!

@liambyrne11022 жыл бұрын
@@Fr6 not at all what i said. i SAID it reminds me of the film the book describes in one of its many plotlines, arguably the "main" one. art is subjective, maybe remember that next time you try to tear down someone else's opinion of it.
@jonholla6463 Жыл бұрын
@liambyrne1102 art is not entirely subjective. I hate when people use this argument cuz its just false. Opinions, value and even emotions placed on the art are subjective. However there are basic objective rules and structures to movies and sure they can be played with in new and exciting ways. With movies there needs to be solid acting, writing, audio mixing, lighting, etc. This movie does play with lighting in a good way and does allow your imagination to come to life. Still it fails in a lot of objective ways that do make it objectively bad. When you can't hear any of the dialogue or your child actors can't convey proper emotion than you've done something objectively bad. There's good in this movie but to pretend it's House of Leaves levels of art is ridiculous

I feel like it triggered a visceral fear that I haven't felt since I was in grade school. *Possible Spoilers Ahead* This film has a 5.6 (out of 10) score on IMDB; while I would have given it a higher score (probably 6.6ish) I think that's pretty fair. It's not the _"scariest movie of all time!"_ (it never is) as the hyperactive children of tik-tok are proclaiming, but it is an interesting & disturbing film, that banks on its usage of unique & experimental shots to get across an impending sense of dread felt throughout, all of which are cleverly filmed in a way that's well-suited to it's dark, somber nature, especially considering its obviously micro-budget. Things like ADRing all the audio in post, & only filming the actors from angles that you can't see their faces, or having the entire film take place w/in what's a barely lit, sparsely decorated home, w/very few scenes where you actually see the actors - when you do, it's only shots of their legs or the back of their heads, not only saves you the trouble of having to direct, or get good takes w/difficult dialogue from child-actors, other than having them stand in a dark room, or walk across screen briefly, & then speak the lines into a mic instead to add the sound in later, all serve/are indicative of the sense of detachment the film conveys. I could be wrong, but It seems as if it were genuinely shot on a camcorder, & doesn't have a filter over it as you suggested. The whole film seems to purposely have this film-grainy look & tinny, poor quality audio, that reminds me very much of old-school VHS tapes from the 80s & 90s. It's 1 of the more bizarre, & unsettling films i've seen in awhile, & i feel as if the tension & anxiety I felt while watching came more as a result of the atmosphere the film seemed to exude rather than the actual _✌🏼plot✌🏼_ of the film. Let me 1st say that I wanted to share my theories regarding this film before I finished this video, so I paused at around 4 mins in. I've not seen, read, nor heard anything in regards to the actual intended plot besides the brief, single sentence description on IMDB, so i know nothing of what it is actually intended to entail, & while there are other ways to interpret the film, after having sat w/them for a bit, these are my thoughts: I think what is happening is that the 2 children, who were somewhat abused & neglected by their parents, whom are no longer together, possibly divorced & splitting custody, & the film initially takes place on a night that kids were at their dad's place staying w/him. They would both rather be w/their mother, but for whatever reason, she hasn't been around for a bit. You hear their father on the phone talking about how the little boy (Kevin) fell down the stairs while he was sleep-walking. He doesn't seem very concerned, & given that there's very little dialogue at all throughout, I believe that' everything that is said gives the 1st major clue as to what appears to be happening in the coming shift. During the phone call, he's explaining to the mother that after the fall, he was seemingly fine, so instead of taking him to the hospital, he went to bed. I think that the dad lies to their mother here, & implies during the call that they were already back from the hospital because he'd been released w/out needing stitches, when he in-fact never went to the ER. The children are both in bed during the conversation, & Kevin falls asleep before the phone call ends. Although he allegedly seemed fine according to the father, the fall gave him a severe concussion, & Kevin will never wakes up. I believe that everything that happens past this point, is taking place w/in Kevin's subconscious while the child's in a coma. From here on, time seems severely distorted, like day & night no longer exist, & the perpetual darkness, along w/the walls & rooms all being completely barren are a result of his recollection of the house from his last memory, taking place w/in a coma dream, & eventually, when all the doors & windows start to disappear, he is falling deeper & deeper into the void, forgetting these details, as he slips further from life & his physical self. His only comfort after awhile are the memories of his toys & the cartoons he remembers watching on their CRT-TV that he & his little sister Kaylee spent the majority of their time playing in front of. Eventually even the memory of his sister begins to fade, he even begins to forget the sound of her voice, which is why she speaks less & less less, & eventually not at all & although he searches for her, eventually she disappears completely. When he eventually does see her again, the details of her face are completely distorted, appearing to no longer have a mouth or eyes in his last interaction w/her. The scene where he sees the vague image of his mother at the side of the bed, I think is his interpretation of what he's hearing while they're in the hospital w/him, & are preparing to say their good-byes. They eventually come back to visit him once more, but it's brief, & at that point, he's been in a coma for so long that he's barely connected to reality anymore, & his memory has becomes so distorted that even the sound of his mother's voice is just a distant, fleeting memory that he barely recognizes. When he begins to hear the distorted sounds of voices coming from seemingly nowhere, & everywhere, they initially sound like his mother & father telling him to _"go to sleep.",_ I think that's them pleading for him to let go while he lays suspended in this vision. I think ultimately, in reality they decide on a last-ditch surgery to try & save his life, before taking him off of life support. When the voices become demonic, & start to tell Kevin to hurt himself by sticking a knife in his eye, it's his fear of the unknown & letting go, manifesting as a nightmarish voice, & I think this is taking place during the operation. When he does what the voice says, w/out much as questioning the decision - I believe this is his brain struggling to interpret what's happening, then when his organs begin shutting down, & he goes into a state of shock, the surgeon has severed his optic nerves to try & reach his frontal lobe. The 911 call that happens afterwards is an interpretation of the Dr's & nurses desperately trying to save his life, pleading w/him to _"stay w/me sweethearts! Stay here w/me..."_ as he is most likely going into cardiac arrest. When we see the text that says _"572 days",_ before Kevin's vision of the house turning upside down, this is obviously an indication of the amount of time he's been in a coma, it's about to end. His soul is being pulled away toward the heavens, & the only thing stopping him is the perceived ceiling he's now stuck to, w/in the memory of his former home. When it begins cracking & breaking around him, it's literally his ties to reality doing the same, during the final moments of his life, as he begins to pass away. The vision of the pile of his toys, it's the 1st thing he saw before slipping into the coma, & now they're the last thing he still remembers from his former life, & when it starts to fade off into the distance, it's a representation of his complete detachment from mortality. When he begins to see the vague image of his mother once again, along w/flashes of still images of what look like photos of himself & his sister, this is possibly his attempts to hang on to anything he can from his waking life, but it's too late, & he can no longer remember even his own face. This is where everything begins to fade out. In the final shot we see an omnipresent door flip over as his soul has ventured into the other side, amidst a void of nothingness, & in what is arguably the most disturbing scene in the film, we finally see the face responsible for those distorted, demonic voices heard throughout, now sporting a sinister grin directing him 1 last time to _"Go to sleep."_ - IMO it can only be the visage of death, that's revealed to've been tormenting, & manipulating him the entire time, mercilessly pulling him from his life & body, content, in having finally taken his soul as Kevin let's go & passes on. OK, so now, an hour later - after stared & paused this video, & typing for *_far_* longer than I initially intended - let me rest my fingers & see how close our interpretations match-up...

This movie didnt work for me. Thumbs up for setting the mood, but besides that, there is just nothingness and confusion. Even after seeing explanation videos, I'm still confused. This movie is one of a kind. I totally understand how some people wouldn’t get it. But it was unsettling. It reminds me of the feeling you get thinking back to childhood memories. How children perceive things differently and how since they don’t have a frame of reference sometimes they can see something F’d up and not actually understand just how bad it is. It reminds me of nightmares I had as a kid and would wake up with a screwed sense of reality
