It would be great if you could do a followup explaining some real world noise figures and how they impact. (For example if you had a 16QAM system, it needs this much linearity, and therefore an IP3 of x). or compare the IP3 of some spectrum analyzer datasheets and how they limit measuring small signals near a strong interfering signal.

are you related to Mr Weber the famous Physicist that has his name of the magnetic flux unit? those 3rd harmonics are here because of the clipping of the amplifier characteristics and shaping the sine wave to look like a square wave which only contains odd harmonics...you made it sounds like the 3rd harmonics are the reason for the clipping which is rather wrong...don't you agree?...we are concerned about the 3rd one because it is just after the fundamental frequency in odd sequence 1,3,5,7,.... the 5th and up will be weaker powers and can be ignored. i don't know Rob... you have a nice track but a bit vague.

3rd and 2nd harmonics are not due only to clipping. They are due to the nonlinearity of the amplifier (eg saturation). Clipping is typically a hard limit on a power supply.
