Finding the rule for a linear function when given a table - How to solve math problems

👉 How to write the rule of a function given the table of values. To write the rule of a function from the table is somehow tricky but can be made easier by having prior knowledge of the type of function. If the function is a linear function, plugging any two sets of values from the table into the equation y = ax + b, where a and b are constants to be found and x, y are values taken from the table. Solving the two equations obtained simultaneously gives the values of a and b and hence the required rule.
Similarly, if the function is a quadratic equation, plugging any three sets of values from the table into the equation y = ax^2 + bx + c, where a, b, c are constants to be found and x, y are values taken from the table. Solving the three equations obtained simultaneously gives the values of a, b and c and hence the required rule. For tables with no prior knowledge of the type of function, a series of trial and error will lead us to the solution of the problem.

Find the pattern by comparing the change in y values over the change in x values. Then use that pattern to find the y-intercept. That will produce your linear model. You can also input those numbers into a table of a calculator and find the linear regression

okay, I am not familiar with that book but in that equation you will no longer have a y variable so you will be left with a vertical line at x = 0

no problem, I have a lot of videos on how to determine if an equation is a function. You can search them on my channel. Otherwise just remember a function is where every independent variable(x) has maps(relates) to exactly one unique dependent variable(y). ex x^2=y is a function as x = +/-sqrty. y^2 = x is not a function because +/-sqrt x both equal y so the relation ship is not unique. Hope this helps.

You know the box that you use to plot the liner graph. Well we get given an equation y=3x+1 and then we have a table with blanks in it and we guess the top line and have to work out the bottom
