I was on a whale watching trip in October off the coast of Newport Beach, California and we saw a Nasca booby that usually breeds in Chile. I don’t know how often they end up off of the United States, but that was a surprise to me and definitely my first mega rare lifer.

That's amazing! What an awesome bird to find! Those whale watching tours are way cheaper than birding trips, and you often get good birds while out looking for whales!

Congratulations on the gilded flicker! This winter has been very good for unusual birds thrown off during migration. I live in the Boston area, and between northeast MA, southern Maine and southern New Hampshire, we've had quite a few species from the western US: Virginia's warbler and two Townsend's warblers, spotted Towhee, and a varied thrush. Also, we had a Bell's vireo and a yellow-throated warbler.

That's an awesome list! Those are very interesting vagrants right there. I think a lot of the vagrancy has to do with the arctic blast followed by very warm temperatures for this time of year. The weather is getting strange, and will continue to get strange. Just a theory though.

Congrats on tracking that down! Very cool bird! I've also never found a rarity like this on my own, but I agree that it is a lot of fun to chase them anyway! Last year, a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher showed up in my home county here in Ontario, Canada and it was very cool to get to see that! I've also seen Tricoloured Heron, Little Blue Heron, and Limpkin also all here in Ontario. I've also had some misses like a Cassin's Kingbird and a Harris's Sparrow.

Those are all awesome birds! I've missed a few too. I think that is what makes birding fun, that there isn't a guarantee you'll find everything!

Nice views of that Flicker! Was also cool to see the Nutcracker, never seen one myself. Most out-of-range bird I have ever seen is a white morph Gyrfalcon across the street from where I worked in Toronto. It made the news and people were "flocking" to see it. Something like 10 years ago, so before I was youtubing - unfortunately!
@brighteyedbirding Жыл бұрын
Thank you! The nutcracker was quite a shy bird. Pretty elusive as well! Gyrfalcon sounds amazing! I would love to see one of those! Thanks for watching!

Wow!!!! Amazing job finding the guilded flicker! I was also jealous about the birds you found up in Alta, they are all on my needs list :)
@brighteyedbirding Жыл бұрын
Thank you! The Alta birds are awesome! They're really easy to get too as they just hang out at the feeders all day!

Great video! Congrats on the Gilded Flicker, that’s a fantastic bird for Utah! Be careful when you’re IDing rosy finches. Young female black rosy finches can look like grey-crowned and are often misidentified. I live in New Mexico where we get all three species of rosy finch in the winter! The most out of range bird I have seen is probably the Nutting’s flycatcher in New Mexico.

Thanks I appreciate it! Oof that’s tough then to ID. That’s amazing you get all 3! What a cool bird for NM!

Awesome bird, looks amazing when its showing its golden underwings. Is there any reason why it would not be accepted? Great to finally find something that you didn't managed to see on earlier occasions. Chased the bohemian waxwing for probably a combined distance of 100 miles before eventually getting them only around 5 miles from my house. On my first attempt to see the waxwings, I had also dipped on snow buntings and a long billed dowitcher (all on the same trip)... both of which I finally managed to get a year later.
@brighteyedbirding Жыл бұрын
It really does! It should be accepted. It just passed the first round of review. The only reason it wouldn't be accepted is if it was a integrade red x yellow shafted Northern Flicker, but it doesn't carry those characteristics.

@@brighteyedbirding youtube has been recently recommending people a lot of videos that has even the slightest mention of "Hawk Tuah", an internet joke so bad its ironically funny this also has a side effect of videos like "Hawks in Utah" being recommended to everyone as well, in the case of this video the title mentioned Utah and birds
