Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

My vote is for the .950 JDJ. With a 3600 grain bullet at 2200 fps, you have 38,685 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle. That’s sufficient for anything from prairie dogs to blue whales. Seems like a great all around cartridge.

Yeah, I’m from Canada, so our government classifies them differently. That would be prohibited up here because it exceeds 10,000 joules. Don’t ask me how many ft lbs that is, but anything bigger than a .460 Weatherby isn’t allowed up here anymore. Hey, do you guys have any suggestions as to what we Canadians should do to help with a brain dead government and gun control?

Thank you Ron. Very informative and practical. When I was 15 my dad gave me a 250- 3000 savage with a shot out bent barrel. Everyday, I practiced off hand shooting and from different positions. And by the time I was 19, I put more deer in the dirt than any other youth that I knew. No. 308, no. Creedmoor, and no 30- 06. My point is to buy a capable rifle and practice with it. Get very good with these stances and techniques and you'll be successful. That is a recipe for the perfect rifle.

Another good discussion. I agree, there can be no "one best cartridge" for everyone. I live in Tennessee and hunt on WV also. For me, the 30-06 is the best. If I was forced to own only one, it would be in 30-06. As you stated, It can pretty much take any big game in North America. It is effective on medium sized game. And in a pinch with some reloading can be used for varmints. It is not efficient for varmints but it can be done. The penalties of 30-06? As you stated, higher recoil than many other cartridges, and slightly heavier rifles. It is still may favorite after 28 years of shooting the same rifle. When I consider Africa in the mix (I can dream), then the 375 H&H comes to the top, just as you mentioned. I have one and really hope to get the chance for an African hunt with it before I die. If you were to ask my Dad, he would say .22 LR. He never hunted large game, preferring rabbit and squirrel hunting. For much of his life he only owned a 12 gauge Remington 870 and a Remington 552 BDL Speedmaster. They were all he needed, and pretty much all he shoots even today at 77 years young.

Not all game is the same size and terrain varies from place to place where folks may hunt. If you match the cartridge to the game and the terrain, you cannot go wrong. I have hunted deer and hogs in Texas my whole life and I am 65. I have used 6mm Rem, .243, 6.5x55, 30-30, 7x57, 308, 30-06, 303, 8mm Mauser and maybe one or two more. I went through a period where I used a Mosin I rebuilt into a hunting rifle. In the right place, at the right time, these have all done pretty well. As I age, I am moving to the less recoil cartridges. The last few years the 308 with a kid load has been my go to gun. I run a 150gr Hornady RN bullet at about 2500fps. A long shot might be 125yds, so this load works nicely, and it is very accurate too. I get really good expansion.

“Best” is always a funny argument, I’ll take my .270 over 308 or 30-06. Not that I won’t hunt with them as well, but I’d consider 270 better even though the other are perfectly adequate. I’ll take the flatter trajectory over the heavier bullet any day, particularly with modern projectiles it’s a none issue for penetration and expansion

Love the videos, cartridge debates are endless, so you will never run out of content potential! lol. I am a little surprised that 7mm RM didn't make the video, although I am sure it is on your list. Slightly more recoil, but also a good rifle for long range shooting, and very capable hunting round. Although not as preferred for brown bear, and it does have a slightly longer barrel, I think it is a really versatile rifle. For larger than 7mm RM needs I think I would prefer the 338 lapua magnum over the 375 H&H (unless legally required of course). 338 LM delivers similar KE, and more KE downrange than the 375 with less recoil and flatter trajectory. I wish africa would change the laws to minimum mass and KE ratings, but for Coastal brown bear I would prefer the 338 personally. Keep making content! Always enjoy hearing your reasoning!

As a newer hunter, and a western hunter my biggest concern is what is ethical and which is the most reliable. I have decided after watching many of your videos the 300 win mag is the best choice for some one worrying about and ethical clean hunt. It has the power to down anything but more importantly it has good ballistics and does not drop very much within 300 yards. Of course many calibers have good ballistics but I like the 300 thanks Ron. All the info you present lead me to this choice.

Great choice! One of the best! Having hunted, reloaded and collecting for 60+ years and having owned about a thousand rifles in every caliber and brand they make, the 300 win mag is one of the very best for North America! I might know since my father hunted with a pre64 when it came out and I hunted with a 300 win mag in Brownings, Weatherbys, Remingtons, Winchesters and Sako’s! It’s a little big for most deer but if you handload then you can load it down or up as needed! Just make sure to use a premium bullets so they don’t on impact at closer ranges!

Just make sure you can handle it properly if you're concerned about ethics. Too many people have a magnum because they want 'more margin for error' and to' use enough gun', but they can't handle the recoil and end up wounding and losing animals because of poor shot placement. So they would've been better off with a lighter cartidge that they could shoot more accurately. That's the only advice I would have if you want one of them. As for bullet choice it's really about matching the weight and velocity to the design. If you're shooting light bullets (165, 180 grain etc) then use something bonded or similar. If you're going heavy and slower (210, 220 grain) you can use something more fragile which will expand more and destroy more tissue, without much risk of underpenetration. Plus you get higher BC if you want to shoot out further.

The 6.5 Creedmore will do pretty much everything the .243 will do, and better. The .243 also has a reputation for being a little hard on barrels. I wouldn’t sell a.243 to replace it with a Creedmore, but I certainly wouldn’t buy a.243 in today’s age. Nothing wrong with either, but aside from nostalgia, the Creedmore has the advantage. People like to knock the 6.5 Creedmore, mainly due to its somewhat irrational, cult-like following, but one would be hard pressed to find a more efficient cartridge.

So what can you tell us about the down range ballistic differences between .223 - .223 Wylde & .223 Ackley? I've kinda determined that 223 Wylde in a bolt action is just silly... and have to admit that I have one... I'm thinking of rechambering the barrel to either 223 Ackley or your favorite 22-250 Ackley

If you are not a realoader go with what is most popular, there will be the most ammo available for it. In 30 caliber that will be the 308 or the 30-06 for big game up to Moose. If you reload get whatever you like and have fun. So for non reloaders these are your cartridges small center fire to large. 223/556 or 22-250, 243 Winchester, 6.5 Creadmoor, 308 or 3006, 338 Winchester Mag, 375 H&H Mag. Like anything, especially if you follow a topic on KZbin, you can easily fall into the "fear of missing out," trap. Just because you see the next best 1000 yard shooter 7mm PRC has superior ballistics over your tried-and-true hunting cartridge, does not mean that you have a bad cartridge. For your average shooter you can get very proficient if you shoot more with that one rifle than getting one, two or three more (not that I'm against that).

that 7-08 is a dandy of a cartridge that ticks so many boxes. I have never felt under gunned while carrying it for whitetail, black bear and hog. I've never gone after elk, but many use the 7-08 for them. It has more punch than it's credited for, inherently accurate, relatively flat shooting, and easy on the shoulder. And, it's chambered in light, quick handling rifles, as well as long range rigs. An excellent choice for young/small frame hunters and the large guys. I tend to carry the 280 AI more often, but that's just a personal preference.
