Ron, I have a pre-64 M70 chambered in 375/338 Win Mag, aka 375 Belted Newton. My fireforming load is my hunting load. I get 2600 fps with 300 grain bullets out of a 26" McGowan barrel. I purchased a lot of once fired 458 Win Mag brass. The cases are already annealed. One pass in my reloading die to form the case. I trim the necks square. Load er up and go bang! No split necks. I am interested in hearing your take on this vis a 375 Ruger. I believe a 375 Ruger reamer would clean my current chamber up, if I chose that route. 416 Ruger, isn't that simply a 416 Taylor minus the belt?

Apples to Oranges, Ron. Use a .308 Win lever action with RN ammo, now lets' test them. Or a modern bolt action 30-30, and use btsp ammo. Both rifles are 7.62 x 51mm.

I shoot and reload 300wby in a Vanguard/Howa. Just upgraded to a Timney and B&C bedded stock. Yea it's heavier, but it's a tack-driver @ less than 1k (2yrs savings). I cringe to think of the price on this...I do not have a large, um medium, um tiny budget surviving on 40% VA Dis...(should be 100, but you know...the VA and yrs and yrs and yrs...) One can always dream...

I hate this subject so much. Has anything been beaten up more than this comparison...? I don't think so. I pose one question to demonstrate how our male human nature plays into this debate. Just suppose for a minute that the .308 cartridge came out first back in 1906. Then... years later, they introduced the 30.06 cartridge as the '.308 Magnum" I absolutely guarantee, the story of these two cartridges would be different. In modern rifles when hand loading your own ammo... the 30.06 smokes the .308 by more like 200 FPS. Don't believe me... do the work and see for yourself. Don't get me wrong... the .308 is awesome... just not the same as the .06. The 280 Remington is not the same as the 7mm-08 and we could compare case capacities all day long on other rounds.

PRC was designed to run longer bullets in weights higher than 175 in factory guns. 7mm mag in order to run longer bullets in the 180-190 class you had to have a gunsmith ream n chamber your barrel. Simple concept

Stop being lazy n reload .... Prc can reach the avg velocity everyone thought. Hornady ammo is a different story.

Great video. Really enjoyed watching this. The passion for hunting is clear to see. Also made me realise how blessed I am to be Sout African. I sometimes take what we have here for granted. We actually went hunting this past weekend. I shot a Black Wildebeest and my wife and 2 friends each shot a Blesbuck. We came across a wounded Blesbuck in the field and the PH asked me to shoot it. You are welcome to watch the video of our hunt on my channel Ron. Love your channel and your work. Keep it up!

I'd say it's about time for a RSO breakdown and head to head comparison of the old school and the new hub bub. Any chance you can do a comparison between the 7 Rem Mag, 7PRC, and the 6.8 western......Pretty pretty please 🙏

I watched this video and was very disappointed this man talks a good story on these to gun never had a 45-70 but hunted with 30-30 and took over 40 deer with it gave it to my son and he took his second deer with at 13. Disappointed with this video because I have hunted with lever action rifles for 55years and this man left out two great rifles one was a 35 marlin which was a step up from the 30-30 and very accurate. The other is my favorite it is the 444 marlin it has a muzzle velocity with a265 grain soft point of 2400 fps it came out in1964 and was the most powerful lever action at the time. This gun is said to kill any big game animal in north America. I have taken over 60 deer with it and some out to 275yards. I have given it to my son now. I now hunt with a 35 Whelen and it's a bad mamy jamy out to 300 to400.I have always been a big bore guy

You did a good analysis of these two cartridges; but - you left out a lot of other lever action cartridges that measure up better than the 30-30. Yes - these two are very readily available at just about any sporting good store in America. I have always been a bolt action rifle person, but I remember years ago thinking...IF, I ever wanted to try a lever action, I would go with the Winchestter Model 88 with the .308 - love the idea of a magazine feed - no issue with the type of bullet design. One mag for the heavy flats and another for the spitzer design - short range, long range. The 88 also has the side ejection, so a scope mount is available. That .308 has some pretty decent bullet choices and good energy. Open, longer range shot - the sptizer mag; close in, shorter ranger, brushy scenio, switch to the heavier flat nose. While the Mod 88 is not so readily available they are out there. Just checked Gun Broker - two different offerings now going under $500 dollars - both pre-64 - they look good.

The .223 and 5.56 aren't exactly the same dimension wise. They'll each seat just fine in chambers meant for the other, as the SAAMI spec differences are negligible. The 5.56 has a throat .125 inch longer than the .223. It also has a higher chamber pressure.

My grandfather used to swear up and down when he was a young man back in Nebraska in the 30s and 40s he used to shoot big bucks with a 22 hornet rifle. He said he would just make sure they were at 50 yards. And I'm trying to think with it being so small like that was he trying to focus on finding a bullet that had the fastest velocity or was he just trying to find one that had a bunch of powder in it? He's no longer around to ask. But he always mentioned something about the bullets. An I was too young to remember.

Not a Fair Comparison. The 300WM is used in a Std (3,34")Long action, The 300PRC in a 3.8" Magnum lengh action. If You get a 3.8" action and rebarrel for 300WM you can seat out 200-250 grns 30 cal bullets to the same performace as the 300PRC. BUT for target shooting. What game needs a 225-250grns bullets? You are better of with a 338 Cal with a 225 Grns hunting bullet instead of a 30 Cal 225 grns for hunting. Check out cartridge availabillity, 10 to 1 for the 300WM over else

Hornady page 160grain 7rm-2950ish fps 7prc-3000fps There's a few videos on here showing the prc isn't as fast as advertised. Not saying the RM is better or the same but the difference isn't gonna make the 400 yard distance hes talking about a damn bit of difference where at 450yards you need that prc.

Ron how does it look if the 308 has a 130 Barnes copper sttx in the cartridge under 300 yards which is probably 100 yards further then most should shoot deer? Since copper bullets retain 95 % of their weight a lot of the time do you really need the heavy bullet?

I just finished watching the 30’06 auto loading video with the benelli and browning bar. What surprised me the most was a comment that a viewer didn’t know that the bar mag is easily removed and intended to be removed from the floor plate on these rifles. I have to imagine that the owner manual would have that in writing. I own 3 of these bars and accuracy and reliability are second to none 🙂 Including bolt guns.

The 444 Marlin actually has a longer case than the 45/70 in its traditional loadings. Factory Hornady Flex-Tip 444 Marlin ammo has a case that is shorter than SAMMI spec to work with the 265gr Flex-Tip and still achieve the correct COL to allow its use in the lever action rifles that constitute the vast majority of 444 Marlin chambered rifles made. Any reloader planning on cooking up some hand rolled 444 Marlin using the 265gr Hornady Flex-Tip will have to trim their brass unless they're going to use once fired brass that was originally factory loaded with the Flex-Tip by Hornady.

I have the Browning 300 win. Mag markll and the the 300wsm mark 3. Both rifles will shoot almost 1 hole groups with 180gr. Federal tsx factory loads and also Hornady 200 eld-x factory loads with the same amount of precision. What I have found out is that if you shoot with the forearm on a solid rest versus a bag the accuracy is terrible. Still talking a 100yrd target. My groups will rival a bolt gun shot to shot 🙂

Guys, nice overall discussion on the .270 hunting cartridge. I believe it still has relevance in the hunting market. My question for you is: Im planning on purchasing a 270 with a 20” barrel. I do alot of hiking in the woods & feel the 20” barrel would be better for me. My question is how much velocity I would lose per inch of barrel length reduction? Using a 130 -150 grain cartridge at 2700-2800 fps, how much velocity would actually sacrifice? Many articles quote any where from 20-50 fps. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated since your expertise is well known.
