Top tip to young/new artists: DON'T focus on finding a style. Focus on improving your art, anatomy and colouring, but never think that you have to have a style. It's not wrong to have 'your own style' but DON'T focus on getting a style! I can't say this enough. Calling something a style, forcing yourself to get better at 'your style' is stressfull and takes the fun out of art

This was a very helpful video ^^ it's definitely hard trying to create your own style. I'm breaking away from the anime style myself, since after years of doing it I just wasn't satisfied with how overly cute and exaggerated my art was. Huge sparkly eyes, small nose and mouth, it wasn't working. So I did the same thing you did. A little bit from there some more from over there, and I thought I had it. Except I didn't. It was never consistent, it was super awkward, my fundamental knowledge was lacking, and it was just awkward and uninteresting to look at. So I began studying anatomy (I know how things work, just not how they look in certain angles lol) and I focused so much on learning all about that, that when I went back to drawing my style did a 180 and was starting to come together. It wasn't overly realistic nor overly exaggerated. The hair and other details were realistic but I kept the eyes and overall look cartoony. I still need to work on my anatomy and foreshortening, but I pretty much have my style, which is the perfect style for my animations I plan on doing ^^ simplistic and cartoony without being full blown cartoon and exaggerated. This video definitely helps ground the idea that a style will occur over time ^^

@Bownimations017 жыл бұрын
Just Debbie it's a little difficult to explain ^^' basically, the closer something in, the bigger it is. So if you draw an outreached hand coming toward the viewer, the hand will be extremely large but as the rest of the body is farther away from the viewer they will be smaller.

I disagree. As someone who thought this way for years, I wasn't getting anywhere until I started studying other people's work. Now, I'm able to use their design choices to work on my art Learning anatomy will only get you so far until you see how other great artists tackle that subject.
@JelArts7 жыл бұрын
That is a very good point! I guess it really depends on each artist. I probably should have emphasized that because looking at other artist's styles have really helped me figure out how I want to stylize my work. The only thing I meant by "let it develop on its own" is to not force your style if it just isn't working, and that it may take a long time before you're happy with it. When I decided I wanted to start finding my own style (moving away from anime), I tried to mimic other artist's styles (just certain aspects of them - the eyes, lips, colouring, etc) in hopes to teach myself how to draw things differently. My style got really weird. It also didn't help that I wasn't very good with anatomy, and even still I have a lot to learn. I only started to find my style when I relaxed more, and just let myself draw without worrying when my style changes from one drawing to the next. As a beginner, this has really been helping me begin to develop my own style, and I hope it continues to change in the future! I definitely want to make another video, as a sequel to this one, offering more suggestions on how to find your style. (sorry for writing so much!)
@PozerWolf7 жыл бұрын
Ah, I see what you mean. Usually when I hear the "let it develop on it's own", I get the idea of never seeing style ever and simply stick to anatomy studies or whatever. I know some people (including myself) who would stick to studying anatomy for years, only to find out that they still can't design. I threw myself onto that situation, however, now that I'm exploring other styles, the journey has became a lot more easier to understand.
@smeeze89797 жыл бұрын
I think it's a mix of both points. I think finding your style is a good place to start and finding how you like to draw and what you like to draw is important, but I think you should a, never limit yourself to only drawing that style because you can't advance and find new things you like and b. you should allow you art style to evolve and advance.
@lanadelrey38217 жыл бұрын
This is an oxymoron. Studying peoples work is part of that journey...When you study Anatomy you observe from life, photos, and other peoples work (aka master studies). Maybe your not learning Anatomy correctly.

When I first started trying to draw, it was a picture of two cats standing and kissing. It was cute but simple. Now I try my best to focus on hair, legs, feet, and, of course, hands. After I drew those cats, I looked at pictures of other people's art. I drew each and every one of them pretty well, but they weren't that good. It was fun, and it helped me develop my style. Now I am getting better at my eyes and stuff. I started to draw a random face and drew eyes on it that were pretty similar. My advice is...just try your best...or do what I did and look off of pictures. :P (honestly, it helped, but its not that good advice...DONT LISTEN TO ME AT THE END XD Just do your thing I guess...)

And now as I look at my art even from months ago I see I don't hate it and feel good about it even though 2 years ago I looked at art I drew a week ago and hated it As someone in the comments said "You do not find your style, your style finds you." I actually don't like having an art stile. I think it just limits you as an artist. I also don't like anime stiles. I think they are mostly uncreative and usually lack emotion ( I'm talking about the boring anime "Kawaii" girls with the "happy" face. Drawn the same, but with different hairstyles and accessories.) An art stile is supposed to come naturally without forcing it. You should use some features of other artists you like and combine them in a balanced and nice way. Obviously, without directly copying them.

This video was super helpful to me in several ways..I thought I HAD to find my art style,and it turns out I already had one LOL Not only did what you were saying help me,but watching you draw was also helpful..I realize now that my drawing doesn't have to look like the people I watch on KZbin,but it is helpful to me to watch others draw because I get inspiration for my own art..I used to find myself wishing I could draw as well as you guys I watch on here,but now I know I will only get better if I practice and all of you wonderful people who put out videos on here weren't automatically good,you had to practice to improve and to get where you are in your skill level 😊

Thank you so much! Your words are so encouraging. Through your video I have regained my hope and motivation to keep drawing no matter how good or bad the drawings might be. I was so frustrated cause I wasn't satisfied with my style but now I understand the concept much better. As u said in your video practice is really important. Thanks again! 😁❤

I guess my style kind of evolved starting with the nose. I found myself drawing in a cartoon anime style when I made it. I'm trying to work on the eyes. Some things like the way I draw hair are totally different. I think when you let your art kinda lead you, it really helps influence your style. I hope this inspired someone to find their own style. I love your vids! Thank you!

I've found that it helps if you try to just think about what you like about other styles, and maybe trying to slowly mix these elements into your own work. Like, maybe you really like the way someone draws eyes: try asking yourself why you like their eyes, and try incorporating the thing you like into your own drawing (not saying you should duplicate someone else, but try taking those small elements that you like)

There was a time where I also tried to force myself to draw things differently on purpose. But somehow this only made my unhappy and took the fun for me. So nowadays I try to not think about style and just let it flow. Thank you for your advice and perspective on that topic !

I don't have a style (yet) but I noticed that even the way people draw lines is unique so the littlest things can make all the difference

Yeah, there's so much about every style that makes them unique. The tiniest of details really make a difference!

Tysm for making this video. It really helped me find my drawing style. I agree with everything said in this video and I really appreciate this video. I really wanna thank the owner of this video in person but sadly I can't. But virtually since I can I really wanna thank the owner of this video. It's really helpful to young and beginner artists like me.

This helps a lot, thanks!!! I am SUPER impatient and wanted to get a style. I was changing things about it too quickly and I hate it. Thank you so much!!! I’m getting influenced by other amazing animators and I just want to draw things that people would like, and I’m scared people will judge it. I have been watching certain animators create these amazing animatics and all I want is to do the same. I’m rushing it. Thank you for creating this video to help me and probably a bunch more people find out what they’re supposed to do!

I believe things can be done differently for each artist but sometimes following others peoples styles will allow you to see the art style that they are trying to create allowing you to explore different areas for finding your style but also learning the different styles that exist can help you understand differences and the similarities between you and the other artist. I believe finding a style is difficult but understanding other styles will help you go in the right path of discovering your style

I like taking shapes as the hair for the light sketch and then when doing line art I bend the rectangles and shapes and I think it makes a difference

I developed mine through learning. It took about a year or two for me to get into the gist of it but it developed naturally as you said yours did. I actually have two (maybe that's why it took the amount of time it did) as I wanted a semi realistic one and a cartoonish one. My advice is don't rush it- it forms itself. The more you try and rush it the less 'you' it'll be. Everyone draws differently so it's best to just let it be as it'll most likely keep changing ever so slightly no matter what. You improve all the time and as long as your improving your art style will too
@JelArts7 жыл бұрын
That's a very good point! "The more you rush it, the less "you" it'll be". I can definitely see how that could be true!

I've gone through this my whole life. I feel like I've found a style> kept at that style for a couple weeks> gone to another style, and continued with that cycle. It's only been recently that I've found a style that I can actually maintain.

Thank you so much. I have been very frustrated with myself because I thought I didn't have a style but this got me to think more about it and know I am going to try and just stop forcing myself to have a style and just draw whatever I want. Thank you so much. Now I am probably going to have less stress and make life a bit more easy. Welp that's all I wanted to say. BAI. BE SAFE AND HAPPY 👌👍❤😜😎

Im an amature artist and learning kungfu at the same time, and what you say is so true. For years, still doing do, Im trying to find how my body works with pencil and paper and martial arts. I would push so hard that developing my own style was impossible until i learned tp let go of trying so hard. Also smoking pot really helped me relax because i was born with arthritis.

Omg I just realized that I already discovered my sketching style today. 🥺 (07/08/2020) I was not really aware of different art styles before until I noticed earlier that every sketch of mine do all seem messy (which I do really hate and makes me frustrated). I wanted to bring back my artistic side that I have 5 years ago, so i'm currently challenging myself on a 30-day challenge by drawing atleast one sketch a day, and it's my 2nd day of doing the challenge today. I'm posting my sketches on my IG story, then just 27 minutes ago, my artist friend replied to my story that my sketches seem to have a "style", which I haven't realized from the past years, and I just realized it today so I suddenly got curious with art styles and ended up here. Thanks for the information, I finally confirmed what my art style really was. For those who still can't find their own style, I can say that doing a sketch every day will help you find your own drawing style, it will come naturally- time will come that you'll notice it. Keep sketching at least once a day, because consistency is the key. :)

Thank you so much! I have been trying to find my own way of art. And I have been watching alot of different art styles..I was getting more anxious and desperate. While watching this video I took notes on Your tips which really helped me alot i also saw that I really liked this type of art style (the one that was to the left of the words styles) I tried to copy it and it turned out pretty well then while drawing I tried to change up some features to make it look diffrent! It was so much fun to see how creative my mind could be! Of course it was not perfect but it was pretty good..I will keep practicing and thank you so much for helping me find my art style

Thank you so much this honestly was a big relief to me. Two of my best friends and I are all aspiring artists and they both already have distinct drawing styles, like if you were to show me even a fragment of anyone one of there sketches I would IMMEDIATELY know who drew it, meanwhile I didn’t exactly have my own style rather I was replicating other styles. And seeing as I’m about to art attending an art academy but still didn’t have my own style, I can honestly say that I was borderline panicking😅... so yeah this really helped😁

I found my style when I started drawing from life and photos, instead of drawing from my own imagination! When I was drawing from my imagination, I basically just copied elements from the drawings I could remember, but drawing from references helped me find my own way of interpreting reality.

Some artist I know on Twitter once described as style comes from not thinking about how _____ would draw this or that and just thinking about how _he_ would draw it. As someone who's been in the art game for almost 2 years now, I can kinda sorta see my style starting to sprout a little bit; but my work still has problems with anatomy, gesture, and others that keep it from being able to shine through. I still tend to worry about style every now and then & get art blocked, but at this point I've come to think its just my brain overthinking or making excuses to procrastinate. I personally copied 2 of my favorite artists work for about a week & also looked up quotes they've given about their process so I can absorb their ways of thinking , and I think from that experience I've at least gained knowledge I can use whenever I wanna make my own things without having to reference/look at their art anymore. I think in beginner stages, toying with style is a good thing as long as you do it only as an occasional experiment and not a full-on priority: drawing stuff you like and consuming from artists you admire (preferably 1 at a time, and also keep looking for new artists to expand your ideas) gives you good ideas of your preferred subjects and how you'd like to draw them. But you have to learn how reality works before you can exaggerate it and that in the early stages you're gonna dislike most of your work, and if you're trying to force it to come it's just not gonna happen. Trust me I've tried, it took a rude awakening to learn my lesson and I'm still not that good :(
