Can I just say that this is an actual helpful guide that doesn't just talk condescendingly about how you can't develop a style over night, or duh, everyone can draw, you just gotta try, etc. Like, these are actually applicable steps that someone can take to learn how to develop their style.

10 yrs to develop a style? bruh who in the world takes 10 yrs for a art style, it takes about 1 year to learn ur own art style, ik a guy that he said he had been drawing for 1 year and 5 months and his drawings are good, well he draws on his phone using his fingers and he's pretty good at it and i mean it he is taking 10 yrs is just to much well of course it depends on what age u start drawing so the progress goes slow but if ur like 15 or 16 1 year should be enough for u to find ur own art style as u practice day by day or whenever ur not lazy to practice u can advance as long as u set ur mind to it, well i should be the last one to talk considering how lazy i am lmao i wonder if i should stick to practice on female than male...but then again in the future i plan on making my own manga, "nothing is impossible" trust me i also know another guy that his drawings are....not to good i'd say more like very average yet he published his own manga its not popular but he did his best y'know

Random but : I was drawing in my sketchbook ([trying] to draw a realistic Freddie Mercury) at the dining table with my older sister. She was drawing too, and then she put down her pencil and said, “You know how there are stylistic types of drawing the human face, and how there can be different levels going from cartoony to realistic?” Of course I said yes. And she continues with, “Well, what if instead of what we look like as the most realistic, there was another level of realism. Like a human more realistic than we are. And we just don’t know because we are the slightly stylized version of drawing for them.” And I’ve never been the same since.

1. Draw something(A human is recommended) 2. What needs to be improved?(just focus on one thing) 3. Look at real life photos(redraw it in the style you used in the beginning photos)(if you don’t see improvement keep practicing)(What waffle recommends is make different shapes from the body or trace the outside) 4. Steal like an artist(Study someone else’s art and see what you like that you can add to make you character look better and try to add it to your character without looking at the photos) 5.redraw the character to see your progress For more detail watch the video obviously

What most effectively helps me improve at figure drawing and anatomy is collecting a tonne of photos and accurate drawings of the body, in a folder called "good anatomy pics" and spend time (during or outside of drawing sessions) really analysing and staring at the pics, looking out for "key anatomy features" that appear regularly (EG, my observations: with thighs straightened, theres usually a crease that appear under the ass cheeks, or when sitting or kneeling, the thighs squash outwards; when leaning sideways or back, a crease usually appears in the same place on everybody). When I spot features that afe missing from my pics, O k ow exactly what I need to learn next!

Also, something to note is there is nothing wrong with not needing a reference. Some people are just good at figuring out anatomy without needing to look at it. What she should have said is "If you can draw accurately without a reference that's great, but if you don't it's perfectly okay to use one it doesn't make you less of in artist". Instead she basically shamed people, by basically saying "If you didn't use a reference, you're nothing special".

Wow, I don't think I've ever seen such a comprehensive tutorial before. My art improves very slowly, because whenever I try to learn from tutorials they always seem to assume a certain level of skill (natural enough for a talented artist I think), but that tends to leave me frustrated because I feel like I'm missing a step. I'm in no way a beginner, but the fact that you start at the beginning and go through the various levels of honing a skill, both visually and verbally, makes it super easy to figure out what to do to improve from the point where each individual person is in their process. All that to say: this is fantastic and super useful, thank you!

I don't mean to imply that you can't learn from other types of things, this video even highlights how much you can learn from just looking at things around you, all I meant here was to express how approachable this video is as an actual tutorial, which is meant to teach things.

I’m grateful for everything you said at step 3. As a kid I loved drawing and doodling and just the feeling of putting pen to paper, but I always struggled with drawing and never had ‘the gift’ of drawing from memory or from my imagination and told myself I just don’t have what it takes and gave up. I learned about 3 years ago that I have a condition called Afantasia. I literally don’t have a ‘mind’s eye’. And I always believed that if you use a reference you’re not an artist you’re just a copycat so don’t even bother. I’ve been very hard on myself over it. But discovering why my brain needs a reference to work from and now teaching myself that there’s no shame in that has helped a lot. I’m still drawing at a child’s skill level but now at least I’m willing to try. 🥰🥰🥰

Art in any form is simply finding a way to express your creativity, Wether music, painting, drawing. I think the biggest obstacle we face is old expression like your either born with it or not, you can't copy, and archaic teaching methods. I'm 44 and only started drawing a year ago and noticed almost all major artists use reference material, and all have used reference material to grow. Even people who draw nature use the nature as a reference, fantasy characters are still based off human or animal muscle structures and so on. So reference away!
@Thunderpaws111
@Thunderpaws111 Жыл бұрын
And the aphantasia will make your approach your art really differently than other people, you’d have the advantage of not being influenced by your minds eye! (although you might not believe this at the moment)
@creative2716
@creative2716 Жыл бұрын
@Brianna E. Your comments helped me to realize that I share that trait and have no "mind's eye". I do have an imagination and creativity however, I just start from a different inspiration. I can look at something and imagine it in 20 different small ways and hellaa embellish it in my mind - my creative process. But sit me down with a blank page and pencil and I'm like 'duuuh, what do you want me to draw?' So yes, I greedily use references to begin and then MY creativity kicks in. Thank you for helping me to understand that better now... 🙏
@briearlley
@briearlley Жыл бұрын
@@creative2716 that’s a beautiful process. 🥰🤗 I think like most things in life, creativity is a spectrum, and once you embrace where you are on that spectrum you can thrive. Creatively divergent. There’s no ‘right’ way to create. Took me a long time to realize it. 😅👌

He made me trace everything in his art portfolio and let me tell you, after doing that for months, your hand really remembers. By the time I was in 6th grade, I was able to draw the old Cola bear you saw on school folders. It was so good that my teacher send it in for a art competition and I won first place. During those times, the Cola bear was not line work but a lot of shading..let’s say I was proud and till this day, I can create anything by simply shading without lines.

This is like one of my favorite videos. Since I can't see anything when I close my eyes, this really helped me a lot. I used to describe my art style is not naked stick figures. Doing this exercise I think my first picture is actually the cutest, by step three they're looking a bit more realistic, and step four looks wow! But when I get to the redraw and I'm feeling pretty proud of myself, the drawing of me looks like old Cathy cartoons. Then I tried to draw my corgi and made the ugliest loaf of bread I ever seen. I should practice corgis another day after my brain recharges. Thank you❣️

You are like me! I only learned within the last 5 years I have, aphantasia. Which is the inability to conjure mental images. I thought everyone lived life like this. I felt so much guilt when artist or people would make comments about people referencing or copying art..because that's all I can do, because I can't "make things" up in my mind or imagine them ahead of time. Finding out this is just how my brain works, and hearing waffles and this video, really made me at ease with my drawing. I enjoy it ..so I am back to it ! I'm going to do it for me now .and just try to improve small steps of drawing

RANDOM STORY: I had an art teacher in kindergarten who got mad at e for drawing a fish picture "wrong" on accident, and said we had to draw it like he does. In 3rd or 2nd grade we got a new art teacher. One day we where painting birds and one boy in our class painted his bird yellow instead of red like it was supposed to be. The tattle tail of our class told on him and the art teacher said: " . . . art can be whatever you want it to be . . . "And was like WHAT??? I had been told for so long that in art class you had mimic the teacher as best as you could. Then I was cyber schooled and had an art teacher that taught us to draw minions! Now I am homeschooled and am learning something even better from Waffles (not for school).

Hi, first I would like to say how much I appreciate your videos and how much joy they bring to me. Second to all the new or old artists out there it’s okay not to have a certain style. Me personally I have jumped in the past years from realistic, to animated, to cultural, to abstract, to graffiti. I have enjoyed all of the, and they have made me a better artist. Don’t feel pressure and just focus on small aspects of art you want to improve on!

I used to really be into drawing but after some rough times I stopped having the energy to keep it up. I really want to get back into it, but my art feels really embarrassing now because I'm so out of practice and I've missed years of opportunity for improving. It's especially noticeable when I see art from friends. We used to be on such similar levels and those who continued drawing are obviously so much better now and sometimes it feels like I'll never catch up. Your tips are really practical and helpful and make me feel less... bad about it I guess. Especially the reference thing... I was definitely around that "references are cheating!" thought group a lot and while I know it's ridiculous now I still find myself avoiding doing it out of habit. Basically, thank you so much for your videos! I'm a new viewer but I really like what I've seen so far and your art style and personality made me a quick subscriber.

I understand that feeling completely. I spend a LOT of time in the hospital Like 5 months in the past year. Each hospital stay was a minimum of 2-3 months straight. So When I got out I obsessed about the time learning I missed & coming to terms with not being able to get a real art education. The thought of not being able to catch up to my art class peers was paralyzing. Then I read about some of my art heroes & just late bloomers in general. I picked up a few of Andrew Loomis´ books, & found out he was the worst student in his class. In fact, he was so bad his art teacher told him to quit. In ¨Drawing the Head & Hands¨ my favorite quote is ¨Let us get used to throwing away unsuccessful effort & doing the job over. ¨Let us consider obstacles as something to be expected in any endeavor.¨ I don know if collecting quotes will help you, but keeping artist quotes that inspired me helped a great deal.

This silencing your inner critic video was also helpful for me. I wrote down the negative voices keeping me from drawing & answered them with positive ways to overcome them. My inner voices tell me I'll never catch up as well & that I will always be too sick to make any progress. I have to remember that I can´t compete right now, but I´ll never know if I could have if I didn´t try. Lamenting that my work will never reach mastery is a waste of my time that could be used for learning. For most people, 5,10, 20 years will pass whether theyŕe productive or not.

"Good artists borrow, great artists steal" I think that quote is more about permanent improvement. Yea I don't think thats true "great artists steal"... I wonder who these great artists are!? Clearly not original, immediately recognisable artists like HR Giger, Simon Bisley, Moebius, Chris Foss, Michael Whelan, Roger Dean, Felicien Rops etc. I wonder who they stole from, and what did they steal? Great artists dont need to steal because they're original enough to not bite anyone elses style, and their ability speaks for itself. All artists probably borrow, but only talentless, unimaginative, desperate artists steal!

This is one of the first developing style videos I totally agree with!! I also wanted to comment a little advice for artists on here that I've found that relates with what you've said. I've noticed that I have periods of time where I'm really frustrated with my art - so I study from real life to see how my perception of that feature can change. If you're unhappy with your art, as frustrating as it may be, it's actually a good thing! It means your ready to improve! Art style isn't this conscious thing - art style is a representation of the way you see things. The more you understand how something actually works, the better your perception will become, which means your art will look better, because it shows your experience. Try to make an effort to draw what you see, not what you think you see! Also - don't get too wrapped up in "style". It's natural and grows with time and studying from life. Hope this helps someone!!

I mean. I have been drawing for 3 years or so and I started like ”tracing” drawings. I remember drawing David Gilson’s and I was so proud of what I did. With time I left that behind and started with making pictures of characters (Disney, Nintendo, anime, marvel or whatever) and went on to fanart. Then I started with creating my own and now , that I’ve tried a lot of styles (chubby , cartoon, anime, realism) and mediums I found my own way of making characters. I believe the best way at least what worked on me is learning a bit of everything and once you are confident you do your own mashup of what you think looks best and what you feel more comfortable with. Still I have my copied drawings placed in my wall because they remind me of how I started.

I'd say it's plagiarism if you barge in and steal everything. Artist looks at the house and thinks: "dude, it has a nice door. Let's take it, saw it down to the correct size, repaint to orange and use in my own house". Or something. Don't steal any doors, please.

Hi Rin, I am so grateful I found your channel! I have been drawing for a while now and lately have been focusing on drawing a chibi character impersonating my daily life or philosophy and I love doing it! The thing is I get real disappointed when I post my drawings on Insta and get a handful of likes from my contacts, which I know is very shallow but it does bum me out.. so now I am using step 3 from this video, ie using reference to work on human anatomy and poses. Bought some magazines to test it out and can see some improvement already! Thanks a lot for sharing and making it look accessible and doable from any level, it means a lot! ❤

Finally... after months of searching for a way to develop my style, or even just improve as an artist... one advice video after another with conflicting advice... one artist steps forth to offer their guidance. I seriously couldn't understand how to improve, I thought I hit my personal plateau of how far my art could progress. All anyone else would ever say was practice, copy other artists, learn the basics, anatomy. I couldn't understand, I'd already been doing that. It would always be a routine of starting a drawing and getting frustrated because this one would have the same problems or worse than the last. But this clicks. Maybe now I can actually draw something other than exactly what I'm looking at. Notice what you can improve, look at references, yes. But then try tracing the shapes, not exactly what you see. As for learning from other artists, don't just draw their art, which is what it seemed like everyone else was saying. Take something you enjoy about their art, but don't just trace or copy it down. Incorporate it into your drawing, but not by staring at it. Use it the way you see it in your mind! Thank you, this is what I wasn't getting! Learn from others, but in a way that your eyes, your mind, your hands see it!
