Merregon's piercing resistance was only to non-magical damage, I think you have a weapon +1, so magical :-)

Interesting, I did not know the game parsed the two like that. Is that a 5E thing, I wonder?

3.5 was probably the best, in my humble opinion. It's also the last one I played.

@@GamingForImmersion I completely and utterly agree :-) I don't think 5 is exactly bad, there are good things in it, but I don't want to play it. We're not talking about 4 in a present polite company, obviously
