From a photographic point of view, with many buildings you are done after around an hour. Not so with this one.
Lines and shapes, curved ceilings and openings to the sky, the interplay between light and shadow... the Rolex Learning Center at EPFL Lausanne is truly unique architecture.
I couldn't miss that on a two-day visit to Lausanne and spent one extended morning exploring and taking architectural photos. I even had to force myself to stop when lunch time was over and my stomach was complaining more and more.
As with the Vitra Campus ( • Fine Art Architecture ... ), the lockdown was an advantage because there were only a few people around the building - which I often like for architecture photography - and I was able to take photos and film almost undisturbed (apart from an overzealous security).
Thanks for watching!

I like the style of your videos. No controversy, no comment, just simple enjoyment of photography

Nice comment, thank you! I aim for the videos to be more immersive for the viewer, just by using image and sound. Not easy to accomplish though - but great to learn a lot about filming.

Thanks to KZbin's algorithm, I came across your video, and the comment about whether you printed it or not was fun, and it was very helpful to study photography by showing you how to take pictures together. thank you.

Nice that you can take something from the video and images! If I can spark some inspiration, I'm happy :)

I feel like I'm right there with you while you make these photos. I don't always agree about whether something is a keeper or printable, but I try to learn from your decisions. Please keep going!

That's great to hear, because it is my intention to make these videos somehow immersive. Not an easy task though. Yeah, if it's a keeper or a print are purely my subjective decisions and it's clear that this doesn't match with the viewers opinions. I thought about somehow including the reasoning behind the decisions, but find it difficult without starting to talk (which I don't want). Anyway, I keep going - there are plenty of ideas in my mind, if just time wasn't such a limiting factor :)

Although you won't find these gems on every street, you can track them down with some research. As beautiful this building is, i heard from a reliable source that construction was an absolute nightmare :)

Thanks, Thomas... Really enjoy your unique first person presentation of the creative process. It's so satisfying. Everything you need and nothing you don't. I also enjoy your soundscapes, mixing live with your choice of music. Kinda disturbing, but somehow appropriate. I don't always comment, but I try not to miss any of your presentations.

Thanks for your feedback Mike! I'm glad you enjoy the visuals and also the sound of my presentations, although I must admit, that concerning the audio I haven't really found a clear line yet. Initially I planned to not use music at all but instead just let the sound of the environment speak. But that felt somehow boring, so I added more and more music. I have a spring video in mind, where I'll give the concept without music another try. Cheers

Yeah, it's rarely wasted time to research unknown places. Most of them have some gems somewhere. Thank you :)

Hey Thomas, great fan of your art style & photography. Well, I'm a photography student too who specially loves & shoots Architecture. Currently, I'm in the city of Berlin, Germany but I come from India.

Hiya, I'm glad you like my work and thanks for letting me know! Berlin! Great for architecture photography, you have a huge canvas at your disposal. When I was there like 10 years ago, what struck me was the stark contrast between old and new buildings due to the gentrification process. Not sure how it is today - I can imagine gentrification is completed in many parts - but this has left a lasting impression (besides the sometimes almost physically tangible history of this city). Cheers

Been enjoying watching your videos. You have a good eye for composition. I was at the Basel messe not to long ago. What wide angle lens are you using?

Nice to hear that you enjoy the videos :) I'm using the old but trusted Olympus OM 18mm f/3.5 lens via adapter. Cheers

Nice to hear, you like it! I was thinking about making a community post (now that I can) for each image and explain why Keeper or Print, with camera settings included. Not sure though, if people would actually read this. What do you think?

Hi, and thank you for your video. For the bridge at 8:15, I detect a kind of moire pattern...is that something that can be reduced/eliminated in Photoshop or other similar software? Thanks.
@thomasrhinow
@thomasrhinow 4 ай бұрын
Hi, in the original RAW file there is no moiré - this came from resizing (twice, before importing into the video editor program and then again when exporting the video). It's best to try to avoid moiré when taking the photo, by experimenting with different angles/apertures/lenses. To avoid it occurring when resizing, what you can try is to reduce the size in several small steps instead of one big (which I didn't do here tbh). If it's in the original file already, there is a moiré brush in Lightroom and I assume in Photoshop too (I don't use PS), which might help. I also read that selective blurring and desaturating could work - never tried it myself though. Cheers
