Marss was seeded lowest in his pool. The only player he fought in pools who was ranked lower than him on LumiRank was Shadic, who has had a stupidly good level up recently and went on to win the tournament. This wasn't a bad performance from Marss, it was the expected outcome by virtually every metric.

Marss’s comments on ult remind me a lot of the criticisms of classical chess, where 90% of games are non-decisive and often super boring cuz players are now too “optimal” are mostly looking to not make mistakes rather than take risks for a win

Yeah I remember Bobby Fischer complaining about that in like, the 70s or 80s. But apparently, with advancement in computer processing, chess has had a good bit of shake-up in its meta over the past few years. People are learning new ways of countering old strategies, I got pretty into it over covid.

If you only use tools or strategies created by others with no input from your own conscience, you are no longer playing the game. You are trying to replicate a game that has already been played. Late ultimate meta suffers so hard from the characters with broken defensive tools. Its cool how ultimate itself reduced landing and arial lag and made shield pressure easier, but it does not help if most top tiers somehow cheat the rules of the game with being just to fast to be engaged, broken invincibility/disjoined tools or some way of terrain manipulation.

12:25 Because using any sort of tether to grab ledge straight up deletes all of the s you gain from being airborne, also you were at a high percent so you had even less initial s. (If you didn’t know the longer you’re airborne the more s you get after grabbing ledge) Which I think is an absolute dog water mechanic, it incentivises characters with good recoveries/offstage stallings techniques to stall more for additional s where as characters who have shitty recovery don’t have the luxury. (Atleast Steve doesn’t get the s since standing on blocks counts as being grounded)

I liked the ‘chosen one’ commentary. It’s fun to hype up a player to make the set more of a story than it would be otherwise. Say what u will about the rest of the commentary, but ‘chosen one’ was funny and I enjoyed it when I heard it.

Yeah the combos themselves were literally just bread and butter, the point is something was actually happening finally instead of just Sonix running away, shadic dash up shielding over and over (cause what else is corrin gonna do vs sonic?) until he gets a read or sonix messes up. It’s “exciting” because corrin has a good advantage state and will want to keep sonic within her range, so at least there will be some honest and interesting interactions for at least a few seconds, until Sonic gets out of disadvantage and runs away again. But gotta appreciate those few seconds of corrin advantage while they last

Players are discrediting Shadic's win because of the ruleset being bo3 in pools and what not. They say the tournament should not be a major or should not count at all. It's really dumb. Players just want any reason to say Corrin is still mid and/or Shadic is not that good. I've seen players say Shadic's opponents were "not even trying their best" which is crazy. Even some top players who weren't invited got salty on Twitter about it.
