Thank you so much for the simple instructions Sir. I have been researching simple instructions over derailleur adjustments and fine tuning gears for about 2 weeks, I have not located one explaining the steps in detail to succeed. My mother and I have mountain bikes of our own, when maintenance is needed KZbin never fails. Accurate Knowledgeable Content like this. Thank you Sir!

@velotique: I am what most people call an "expert", or close to it, in MANY different fields. Everything from agriculture to Computer Systems Analysis & Operations, but it had been several years since I had worked on a bike with multiple gears. I had no idea what I was doing with this adjustment, but it was 3a.m. & I had to get it finished so my wife could go to work at 6am. I just want to say thank you so much! I couldn't have done it w/o your excellent video! I truly appreciate it!

This is an old video but thank you so much! I really appreciate it. Right now I am having problems with the big gears cage (1, 2, 3) on my 24 gears mountain bike as my relative dislodge it by dumping my bike down on the ground which hit the corner of a pavement that dislodged the gear. From looking at it today, the gear doesn't appear to be broken nor bent (I hope not because it is expensive to replace and he tried to resolve it by hammering it back into position, UGHH!!) but I would have to start from scratch to tune the gears to correction as you've demonstrated from 1:10secs in your video. I'm nervous about it as I am completely inexperienced, and it is hard to find a bicycle repair store as I have recently moved to a different country. Crossing my fingers for all to go perfectly tomorrow as I'll work on my bike whilst watching your video on my ipad tomorrow for guidance. Wish me luck!

When the chain is on the smallest chainring, the front deraileur cable should be tight enough to just eliminate slack. It should not be moving the front deraileur from the slack (smallest chainring) position. It must be tight enough to eliminate any free play and make the front deraileur immediately resposive. --Saul

Start with the barrel screwed all the way in, so the cable is the slackest. This gives you the maximum range to tighten the cable.

Limit screws just make sure your chain doesn't fall off on the inside and out. Think of it as a guard rail for your chain. You want it close, but if it's too close it will rub. If you have a rubbing problem when they're super loose it's more than likely a tension problem or derailleur position problem. Rubbing can occur if tension screws are too tight, because that is like making your "guard rail" too close to, or in the middle of the road.

Like the chain won't move to the second cog. I have to shift to 1 so it skips 2 all together. Hopefully that made sense lol.

Check for interaction with cable tension and shift lever. 1)Test the low limit screw by disconnecting the cable. 2) Test High Limit. Shift front shifter to lowest front gear position. Anchor cable with maximum cable tension. Shift to Largest front gear. If high limit screw has no effect increase cable tension. Hope this helps.
