snap_ drama if it is going over the last gear you need to turn the high limit clockwise. I just had the same issue and fixed it doing just that. I believe that is what makes the limit screw stop the the derailleur from going past that last gear accidentally.

Probably eight or nine months ago I used this video as a guide to getting my rear derailleur set perfectly… The instructions in this video are articulate, well laid out, and very clear cut. For somebody who has absolutely no experience, this is a very complicated endeavor; which this gentleman explains in such a way, that WITHOUT ANY FUSS WHATSOEVER, I was able to perform like a master mechanic from a reputable local bike shop! My derailleur shifts smoothly like a Swiss watch! With that being said I hadn’t yet adjusted the front derailleur, and came here just to make sure I’ve left this gentleman and this channel a compliment, a like, and double check that I’m subscribed! It’s easy to use these things and go on with life, and often it’s just the nature of the world, but this guy did such an amazing job guiding me through this process, if I didn’t stop to thank him & your channel, then I don’t feel I deserve the masterful help! Thank you for your service to humanity! There is no doubt you are a master at what you do! “If you can’t easily explain something so that a small child can understand it, then you don’t understand it well enough yourself.” -Albert Einstein

This is pretty much the case. My appreciation for these videos is indeed part of the reason why I tend to pick Park Tool when I need something to work on my self converted E-Bike, though it helps that the quality of the tools speak for themselves. Would be nice if you could get one of their Beam type torque wrenches with the square socket fitting on both sides of the tool end though, because sometimes the only position you can torque the bottom bracket bolts is one you can't see the indicator face side of the torque from, would be nice if you could flip the wrench around and swap the socket onto the other side....

Elijah Trafton try going through the video with a pen and paper handy instead of your tools. Make notes of the most important steps. Try and get your head around cable tension first, that is quite a tricky concept: lengthening the cable housing tightens the cable, it doesn’t make natural sense to your brain. Good luck!

Calvin, you are an excellent teacher. Thanks for helping me restore and adjust a 30 year old Suntour XCM Lite rear derailleur. Some, not all but some bike shops, I imagine car repair/maintenance as well seem to not be very helpful unless you know the exact terminology. Not only can I properly index my gears myself now but if for whatever reason I’m lazy I can go to a shop and usually within 15 minutes I’m off and running for little to no charge and it seems to me it is because I can give the exact issue. Sad that not everyone gets the same treatment. Also with a massive spike in riders because of covid I appreciate Calvin Jones and this channel even more. Cheers guys

The video also shows us what to look out for when things are going wrong and what to do about it. Too many instruction videos regardless of subject just show what happens when everything goes exactly as it should the first time. Bike maintenance is fiddly; things seldom fall into place at the start.

Mr. Jones, my bike recently fell over and heavily loaded panniers bent the rear derailleur into the spokes so when I tried to pedal the pedals would hardly turn, so naturally I came down on them with all my weight and mangled the derailleur as the wheel turned a bit. I just finished putting a new derailleur on, for the second time, and I can’t thank you enough for your excellent video and commentary which enabled me to do the install successfully. You are a great asset to cycling in this country. Keep up the good work sir, you da man!
