A miter saw is used for a precise cut, but how do you know if your cut is accurate?
In this episode I review how to adjust the Dewalt 779 for both Miter Cuts & Bevel Cuts. It super easy, should take less than an hour, and shouldn’t need to be touched again.
Overall Steps to Adjust
Check Table, Fence, & Blade
- Unplug your saw
- Check to ensure your table and fence are both flat with a carpenters square
- Rotate your blade to ensure it’s not bent or out of shape
Miter Cut
- Set the saw to a 90 degree bevel cut (straight up and down)
- Using your carpenters square against the fence, ensure the blade has no gaps along its length
- Check the other side as well
- If adjustments need to be made
- Loosen the face plates of the angle guide
- Tap it until the square is flush
- Tighten the face plate
Bevel Cut
- Rotate the blade to either + or - 45 degrees
- Using a Digital gauge or a machinist square, check that it’s at 45
- If not correct, adjust the appropriate fastener on the back of the saw
- Repeat for other 45 degree cut
- Bring saw to 90 degrees and measure with digital gauge or machinist square
- If not correct, adjust with the appropriate fastener in the back of the saw
It sounds complicated but when you see the mechanism, it’s very simple. If you have any confusion, watch the video.
Thanks as always, be safe, and happy woodworking!
Josh

I was really surprised how much cutting power (and torque) this saw had out of the box. I've used other (10" saws) previously and was pretty surprised with the speed and cutting ability of this Dewalt saw.I have bolted mine to a table to minimize movement which I highly recommend.This is a Great saw kzbin.infoUgkxPeGkHOMe05FySypTOvYumxMn-xi39oRe with a light to see your cutting line (not a laser line).I'd recommend this saw fro anyone looking to upgrade from a 10" miter saw.

@@NorthwestCraftsman I just got this model from Home Depot and I have the 90 true to the fence (on both sides), and the right side 45 to the fence. But the left side 45 is slightly off, maybe .3 to .5 greater than 45. The table and the fence both are flat all the way across. Could the adjustable detent miter scale be faulty? Any suggestions?
@NorthwestCraftsman
@NorthwestCraftsman 3 жыл бұрын
Hey there! Glad to hear it’s mostly in line. I see a few possible options: 1. There is a small amount of tolerance stack up in the detent plate. i.e. the very small amount of play all components will have allows the right to hit 45 on the dot, but it’s too close to the edge on the left and pulls it off by a hair. 2. The fence on the left is off (less likely because of the 90° measurement being on) 3. It was measured poorly (I’m guilty of this more often than I care to admit 😂) 4. You’re limited by the accuracy of your measurement To make sure it’s not 3, which is easy to check, try measuring it a couple of times and see why kind of repeatability it has. To check 4, how are you measuring the angle? If those look fine at it does seem to be in the detent plate, there are two possible actions I see. 1. Ignore it and only is the right side. I rarely use the left 45. 2. Split the difference between the two and reduce your error to about 0.1° on both sides, or, only use the one side. Problem with this is that it’ll shift all your measurements. In that direction and you’ll want to double check them to make sure they’re not too far off.

You deserve an award for a very thorough explanation and well edited instructional video, kind sir. Have you noticed that the blade guard's wheels are problematic when doing bevel cuts? Mine can't roll along the the work piece like it should because of the aggressive angle and I had to remove my blade guard entirely. Thanks!

Thank you! I appreciate the compliment and am glad you found it helpful. I have noticed that the wheel binds up on bevel cuts sometimes. What seems to help me is when I use my thumb on the trigger hand to slightly lift the guard as I initiate the cut. Very cool video!👍👍... Just remember... ✴️✴️✴️ That when you are checking the bevel angle with a digital angle finder, don't forget to rotate the blade a quarter or a half turn when taking a reading; so that your measuring device will be at a different spot on the blade so that you can get multiple readings from the blade surface; which will help eliminate possible defects in the blade itself(eg:a bent or warped blade) from throwing off your measurement by a decimal or two. 👍 ✴️✴️Also✴️✴️ When checking for the bevel angle with a digital angle finder remember to put the magnetic meter on the bottom side of the blade as well as the top side of the blade to check the measurement and see if there is any difference due to the weight of the magnetic calibration device, when on the top side of the blade... (Not as important though, depending on the size and weight of your digital angle finder device...) Peace!!!😁

Bet you haven't heard this before: My new (out of the box) DeWalt DWS779 does not track straight. No, not a fence alignment issue, the back side of the blade tracks just left of the leading edge. That means it's crabbing through the cut. After the blade has made its initial cut the back side of the blade comes along and nibbles just a little more out, leaving an ugly joint. I just unboxed this and the first thing I intended to do was to make sure everything was properly aligned. Though it looked like a good 90˚ cut, after cutting a test piece - it's obviously crabbing to the left slightly. Using feeler gauges, the 0.018" gauge seems to feel like it strikes the edge whereas the 0.017" gauge slides in without contact. This measurement was taken with the piece held edge down to the surface of my cabinet saw. On the flat. No joints, just flat.
@NorthwestCraftsman
@NorthwestCraftsman Жыл бұрын
Dang! No kidding, I haven't heard of that before. It strikes me as a bearing/rail assembly issue for the slide which causes it not to track in the plane of the saw. I'd absolutely reach out to Dewalt for a replacement.
@petec6690
@petec6690 Жыл бұрын
@@NorthwestCraftsman Imagine two poles sliding parallel to each other. At one end you have an end-stop and at the other you have - um - a saw assembly. As long as the end-stop and the saw assembly are perpendicular to the poles and parallel to each other, the saw will not crab. Here's what I did: I loosened the mounts enough that I could influence them gently but firmly with a hammer, causing one pole to shift back slightly. The first result showed promise but I had to repeat the process a few times. One time too much and the saw was now crabbing the other way. Ever so gentle taps with the hammer caused it to spring back to its factory position and I had to start over. Once I got it just slightly too far I tightened things down a bit, then with ever so slight taps I coaxed it back into alignment. The saw blade now has barely any aberration of crabbing. I now know that if I want to repeat the adjusting cycle again - I know how. For certain it was never intended to be a user adjustable feature, but if necessity is the mother of invention then mother-in-law is the invention of necessity. And adjusting that was definitely a mother-in-law of a bikch. Yeah, I know I mis-spelled that.

This is a great video -- all business, no fluff, and you have a really straightforward delivery style -- but at 1:38, talking about the fence alignment, it would be helpful to know how make adjustments to the fence to be sure it is true instead of "get them fixed" as an answer. Appreciate the title says "Miter & Bevel Adjustment", but your box level can be spot on and if the wood is not consistently flush against the fence, it doesn't matter, eh? Just a thought, brother.

First, thank you for the feedback! I’m glad this style works well for you. Second, you’re totally right, I was more vague than I ought to have been. If the base of your miter saw is out of plane/true, it’ll likely need to be remachined. For me, that functionally means returning it to Dewalt. For your last point, can you elaborate a little more? I’m not sure I fully understand what you mean.

This was very helpful. So, what would cause the miter angle to be way off when doing taller vertical miters? I had some shiplap that I wanted to miter on the long side for having two pieces laying against the wall meet in a 45 and the miter angle was off by several degrees on the downward cut height of the board. The saw would follow my line at the top and then be out by the time it hit the bottom of the board. I checked the bevel angle and the saw was perfect and it's 90's are solid. Are taller miters just not ideal / not accurate? Should I have laid it flat on the cut table instead? I couldn't do that because my dewalt 12in model isn't dual bevel unfortunately.
@NorthwestCraftsman
@NorthwestCraftsman Жыл бұрын
Glad this was helpful! And it took me getting through your comment to that last portion for it to click why you weren't using the bevel function. That being said because of the articulation of the saw, you can really compound your error if it's just slightly off. There are a few troubleshooting steps I'd do before going to a crosscut sled, if you're interested, let me know and I'll get it together.

Hey man I just got this saw today as a big upgrade to my current saw, and I noticed when i have the miter set to 0 degrees and tilt the saw 45 degrees directionally over to my left-hand side for a bevel cut, as i bring the blade down there is so much "play" in the wobbly finger guard that as it touches down it completely binds sideways. Fully stopping the downward motion of the cut. When I loosen the slide all the way out, slide it out at a 45 degree bevel the same thing happens as I bring the blade down, the finger guard binds even more, bending it sideways and stopping the downward motion of the cut. I've taken the entire finger guard off, and put it back on, tightened it up as much as possible. Just curious if you have experienced this as well? Or if you have any recommendations. It seems to be a major issue as it makes the 45 degree cuts near impossible.

this is a link to what I am having trouble with ,youtube video Matthew Peech .HOW TO MAKE A GARDEN TRELLIS / TUTEUR / OBELISK. 7 degree miter and 45 degree angle cut on a dewalt 779, I made sure the saw is set up per your video.

It looks like the measurement he's taking is on the longest edge once the bevel is cut. So, first, cut on the end to start it, then measure the 10in from the point furthest out, mark, and cut so the mark is on the longest edge. You can double check by measuring the longest edge.

Don't trust a carpenter square for this kind of work, honestly this is not fine tuning a saw. It's more like rough tuning. You need to actually make cuts to tune up the saw, Google five cut method.

Fair enough, the five cut method, at least for the miter, would be the most accurate. Used it for my cross cut sled and the method is awesome. Also, true “accuracy” can never achieved and as such, what drives my effort is the accuracy I need for my use case. For me, this is plenty accurate.

Most people are going to stop watching as soon as you pull a plastic speed square out to Check a precision tool. Just saying

You bring up a great point. I understand the molded speed square isn’t the ideal but the concept should still hold. If I didn’t caveat that in the video, I should have.

@@NorthwestCraftsmanthere’s always gotta be that one guy… you gave the basics which is all any home do-it-yourself guy needs. The guys with the “precision tools” aren’t going to need a video like this.🙄
