Engineers and scientists are trying to intervene in the Earth’s geochemical cycles. Because it appears efforts to cut CO2 won’t suffice to avoid irreversible climate change. But does geoengineering offer a real solution? Or is it just human hubris?
Some scientists believe that we need to explore radical, and perhaps dangerous, technologies in order to be able to lower the earth’s temperature through geoengineering in the near future.
Science journalist Ingolf Baur explores the feasibility and risks of leading geoengineering projects. His journey takes him to meet scientists in Switzerland, Iceland, the US and Peru. Along the way, he encounters two very different strategies: One is to fish climate-damaging CO2 from the atmosphere and sink it underground or in the deep sea. The other, and this is the far more controversial strategy, seeks to develop techniques that dim sunlight.
Global warming is causing entire mountain ridges like the Moosfluh above Switzerland’s Aletsch Glacier to break off. Such dramatic changes could increase the pressure to try geoengineering.
Its most prominent proponent is David Keith from Harvard University in the US. He’s devised experiments to to sound out the possibilities of "solar geoengineering." His idea is for fleets of aircraft to dump millions of tons of sulfur into the stratosphere every year, where it should reflect part of the incoming sunlight back into space. As audacious as this method seems, it’s actually no different to what happens during volcanic eruptions.
Or could we still manage to get greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere again? In Iceland, a group of researchers is using a special process to filter carbon dioxide from the air and pump it 2,000 meters deep into basalt rock. The surprise: after a few months, the CO2 is already reacting chemically and turning to stone, which renders it harmless - permanently. The quantities are still far too small, but it shows that as controversial and risky as some geoengineering methods may be, in the end we may need technology to avert or at least mitigate the effects of climate collapse.

#Bob Owen's • Not to mention the FACT GeoEngineering IS a very big factor in worldwide weather anomalies, that are increasing. The West Coast of America is drying into a desert, the East Coast is drowning in increasingly intensive weather events. I remember a childhood under BLUE skies. We're lucky to get dull gray, there is so much dispersing going on currently. Get this; IT used to be a trail left behind, thus the name Chem trails. I saw the new technique up close. And it is an INSTANT humdinger. As the plane flew overhead it was ejecting barely perceptible puffs of blackish smoke. I also saw on at least two, possibly three instances, where there was three silver objects. One might even have called it bursts of light. They were always behind the plane as if being spit out, three at a time, stacked snowman fashion. I think it was dissolving canisters or something. Within a matter of two or three minutes the skies had turned completely overcast Grey. Who knows what we are inhaling on a daily basis?

The reference to volcanic eruptions cooling the planet and using sulfur to shade us from solar radiation completely ignores, or at least leaves out in this documentary, the serious risks of acid rain becoming widespread and ruining so much more
@katja6332

My first thought was 'sulfur' ? Are they crazy? I am born 1977 and we grew up in fear of acid rain ruining our environment.. 😬 The problem is that even if we would put Sulfur up the sky, the problematic part is our habits.. There's something called "rebound effect" in psychology. People who live in low energy homes are overconfident because they have a low energy home, hence they allow themselves to fly more often and drive huge cars.. Lol.. Whatever they have saved, the effects are gone through other systematic responses.. 😅 Now transfer this to the "solutions" for lowering the global warming. People will say "hey, we have control over the environment now let's spend more, exploit more and ignore the problem more"..

This year I tilled and planted a garden area which has been fallow for at least 4 years. My from seed Rutgers tomatoes always produced on my property. They died within weeks. Same with Creole tomatoes. The corn looked pitiful and the lima beans barely grew enough to bloom. I didn't get enough okra for a good gumbo. Climate conditions were perfect. The ground should have been perfect. This is why I am researching governmental climate change. These scientists are idealists. Don't they sound similar to others? Do you remember the Manhattan Project? Or was it another scientific breakthrough which became a weapon?

@@lulaporter6080 the Manhattan project was the research for the 1st nuclear bomb so you are correct. I agree most climate documentaries are from an idealist standpoint, but I can agree it has changed. Did you know geoengineering even over in China can have effects throughout the world on climate.most countries have done what they call small geoengineering projects.after much research I believe they have been geoengineering the Artic and Antarctica. Did you know geoengineering can lead to the termination shock? A disaster like setting off a volcano. The termination shock was also a science fiction novel and the man the wrote it came up with metaverse. The powers that be in 2014 have already predicted a disaster. The disaster they say will happen between 2020-2030. The disaster will also be blamed on man made climate change.the termination shock is not just a science fiction novel it is real. They have been geoengineering for decades. They’re not using sulfur, they’re favorite is aluminum but also barium and strontium. Dane Wigington has heavily documented this over the past 20 years. Through soil samples and snow samples from mount Shasta. He is one of David Keith’s biggest critics it’s a shame you didn’t include him in this conversation, but not surprised as it was clearly biased in favor of geoengineering.

All I know is throughout history every single time we think we're going to outsmart nature there is always a price to pay. Always. One way or the other she always wins. Seems to me it would be better if we just changed how we live. Changed our entire culture. Started taking care of the earth instead of taking it for granted. I'll also add that living a sustainable more environmentally friendly lifestyle isn't that hard. All it really means is less. Less of everything. Our biggest problem is we're conditioned to believe we should be able to buy and consume as much as we please whenever we want.

One thing we need to do is move water from the ocean back inland to places we need it and if we can do that while generating clean energy we have a chance to mitigate climate change and still have a prosperous future. It is really, really hard but it is not impossible. The biggest idea I am trying to express is tunneling aqueducts from the coast, in this case the west coast of the USA inland to feed combination geothermal power and sea water desalination plants. The idea seems to be so big that no one has considered it possible but I believe it is not only possible but it is necessary. For over a century the fossil water contained in aquifers has been pumped out to feed agriculture, industry and municipal water needs. The natural water cycle cant refill fossil water deposits that were filled 10,000 years ago when the glaciers melted after the last ice age. Without refilling these aquifers there is not much of a future for the region of the United states. As a result ground levels in some areas of the San Joaquin Valley have subsided by more than 30 feet. Similar fossil water depletion is happening in other regions all around the world. TBM and tunneling technology has matured and further developments in the industry are poised to speed up the tunneling process and it's these tunnels that are the only way to move large volumes of water from the ocean inland. The water is moved inland to areas where it can be desalinated in geothermal plants producing clean water and power. In many cases the water will recharge surface reservoirs where it will be used first to make more hydro power before being released into rivers and canal systems. It's very important however to not stop tunneling at these first stops but to continue several legs until the water has traveled from the ocean under mountain ranges to interior states. Along the way water will flow down grade through tunnels and rise in geothermal loops to fill mountain top pumped hydro batteries several times before eventually recharging several major aquifers. What I am proposing is essentially reversing the flow of the Colorado River Compact. Bringing water from the coast of California first to mountaintop reservoirs then to the deserts of Nevada and Arizona and on to Utah, New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming. This big idea looks past any individual city or states problems and looks at the whole and by using first principles identifies the actual problem and only solution. Thank you for your time, I would like the opportunity to explain in further detail and answer any questions. A better future is possible

All the nano-crap (mainly aluminum) spread in the sky is heated with doppler radar (NEXRAD etc.), causing high pressure, which along with chemical and (primarily) bacteriological ice nucleation used to lower the pressure, is likely how they steer weather systems. Hurricanes are created and weaponized, tornadoes too. This has been ongoing for decades - not something new. This video is a psyop, trying to make people think we need to do what has already been happening for decades, causing the so-called "climate change", a propaganda term, because OF COURSE THE CLIMATE CONSTANTLY CHANGES. This geowarfare, particularly weather warfare, has been causing the catastrophes, not us normal humans. Manmade CO2 is not the issue, as the psyop propaganda Maestros that made this video want you to think. Please watch the videos at "weatherwar101" before that channel is deleted. Why not allow hail to fall, and if it affects plants too much, Germany cannot lack to build a greenhouse or have appropriate alternative crops, assuming damage to crops is what made them to such great lengths of weather modification.

@@maxentropy0305 The problem isn't "expanding human population". We produce enough food to comfortably feed 10 billion humans. We don't for one simple reason, Capitalism. It simply isn't profitable to and under Capitalism things are only done because they are profitable, not because they are needed. Just like the British when they casually decided to genocide Indians and Irishmen with starvation because of Malthusian "large population" rhetoric, people who violently reject critiquing the economic system that privileges them will be the death of millions. People fell starved to death in front of trains and ships moving mountains of food from their land. While the British declared it's "nature" rectifying the savage races' population. Capitalists and Imperialists love attributing their destructive actions to "nature".
@maxentropy0305
@maxentropy0305 2 жыл бұрын
@@tesso.6193 “We produce enough food to comfortably feed 10 billion humans” - I seriously doubt this statement. It might be true under ideal conditions (no prolonged droughts, no wide-spread infestation, no land grabbing due to over urbanization, etc.) Unfortunately, as the human population keeps growing and climate change intensifies, these conditions are no longer possible to maintain. Even if technologies may alleviate food shortage, there are other types of shortages that may not be alleviated. The most acute one is space shortage. Fighting for living space has been the main drive for wars throughout the history. The non-stop Israel Palestine conflicts and the desire to build a US-Mexico border wall are two typical examples of how much we humans long for or don’t want to share living space. There is no question that capitalism and greed contributes to food shortage and other scarcities and imbalance. I would say over-population is the ultimate form of greed, because it disregards the capacity of nature and the interests of other species. if you criticize capitalism, perhaps you should criticize over-population too.
@tesso.6193
@tesso.6193 2 жыл бұрын
@@maxentropy0305 It's a widely known fact and if farmers not dumping, tons, literal mountains of food because it wouldn't be profitable to sell them this last crisis didn't make you suspect it, nothing will. You can just google it. Capitalists literally produce food, clothing and tech then dump them in landfills so the prices don't fall. The latest Amazon scandal is just a peek. "I would say over-population is the ultimate form of greed" Riiiiight. Fuck off, I'd need to have 8 children in my country to match the consumption and carbon footprint of 1 European child. But when it comes down to it, White people think *we're* the problem. We exist too much. And it becomes an "overpopulation" problem, not a Capitalism and Imperialism problem. See how the burden is shifted? If the choice is between a person from Luxembourg, who consumes 22 times as much as some random African, people will point to the African as the problem because they have kids. There is no "greed" it's a misdirection. The profit motive is the cause. Left to their own devices, humans are a naturally collaborative pack animal.

This kind of solution can only do so much. It's much like "reacting" to a problem. What we need is "prevention." And for me that is all of us, humans, having a deep real understanding of the value of our nature and have a deep sense of respect for her that we live harmoniously with her - be more creative in using our resources. Forego the mindless and selfish exploitation we've been doing for generations. This is not just about now. Our Earth's recovery, healing & renewal exceeds far more than our generation & tons of generations after us. Taking care of her, giving back to all she provides is an infinite game that ALL of us should partake on. Thus, the start of teaching, informing, making all humans aware of our part in this recovery is part of the best solutions. We pushed and is pushing Her to her limits. Now it's of optimum importance that we use the "intelligence" & "capabilities" we're so proud of to help her recover to her fullest health & then live in harmony with her.

@Boch Gole I think you are right. I also think that we as biological beings cannot progress much in this universe, so the AI (having a non-biological) form can thrive much better and it may actually be a natural process for evolution or an end goal for intelligent beings to transition this way.

The nature and its working is PERFECT If we humans step in on the working and flow of nature which we always do Bcz our knowledge is imperfect , we could trigger immense disbalance and pay the price for our ignorance Our extinction is imminent bcz its the only thing we are good at

Newsflash: Nature is changing in a long lasting dance of entrophy. Earth is changing without our doing (we tipped the co2 scale though too quickly) Nature is not perfect at all. There are some self regulating mechanisms to get ones.. James lovelock and his gaia hypothesis... Daisy world model based on black and daisies... Is this what you hint at?, or do you mean something different I don't know about? Share with me if you will?
