Iran’s mountainous terrain has always been an important part of people’s lives. Years ago, these mountains were populated by legendary horsemen. Today, they are the subject of scientific investigation.
This film provides the viewer with stunning arial views of these mountains. It unfurls the rich tapestry of Iran’s history, from the legendary Order of the Assassins to the Mongol invasions.
We also get to know Iran by meeting some of the fascinating people who live there. Take Ali, a world champion of mounted archery. Despite its waning popularity, the sport has endured in Iran due the importance of horses throughout Iranian history. We get to explore the historic Tabiz bazaar, which is still a bustling market and kaleidoscope of cultures today. There, we meet Dschebrael, a stall owner who speaks Azeri, the official language of Azerbaijan. In fact, Azeri can be heard throughout the market, which serves as a meeting place for Iran’s many ethnic groups, and thus as a microcosm of the country’s cultural diversity.
The film introduces us to beekeepers and violinmakers, as well as young people living in Iran who want to travel and express themselves freely on social media -- even though it is forbidden.

Iranians are among the nicest people I have met. You have to understand, politics are complicated. The people are not the rulers. Persians were always successful throughout the history. There would be no Islamic Golden Age without them. So, despite many obstacles, they will find ways to rise up. Who knows, someday their Safavid and Qajar flags will fly again.

The current government of Iran deserves all the criticism it gets. Iran also has a rich history and rich culture. The people of Iran deserve better than what they currently have. The same can be said of many places in the world.

@@ems4884 Yes, I agree. The Iranian gov't is ideological and tone deaf. Iranian culture and civilization are different things. Study Iranian history, culture and geography to reduce your *recency bias.* Iran should not be defined by what's happened since the 1979 revolution.

Thank you to DW for this beautiful documentary about a country of beautiful civilization, people and breathtaking nature. As an Armenian, I am grateful to Iran and Iranian people for being a safe shelter to so many Armenians and giving them opportunity to preserve their identity when fleeing the genocide carried out by Ottoman Turkey in 1915 against Armenians. The friendship between Iran/Persia and Armenia definitely stood the test of time and it’s not just decades but thousand years at least. There is a strange and ancient love between Iranians and Armenians. I have not seen almost any Iranian who does not praise the Armenian people whenever they talk about them. I know that a large number of Armenians came to my country because of the Ottoman wars and World War II, and then they became part of us because of the great cultural respect and love. And no one considered them foreigners or Armenians anymore, but they were part of Iran and in the war between Iran and Saddam, a large number of Armenians were martyred to protect the soil of Iran. It is a strange love in history.

Too bad Aryans weren't Muslims and didn't speak Arabic. All organized religions are false. Persians have more in common with Slavs, Celtic, Greek, Roman, and German people than they do with Arabs. Everyone knows Indo Europeans (Yamnaya people) migrated from north of the Black Sea (Pontic Steppe) between 4000-3000 BCE. The oldest swastikas in the world are found in Ukraine. And the first horse riders are the Yamnaya people.

Aryans and Indo Europeans are cool. I despise the Abrahamic religions. Vedic Aryans are great too. The Rigveda is amazing. Can't say the same for the Quran or the Bible. Plus, we all know Jesus was really a Zoroastrian. It's why the "Magi" (magic) (magicians) Three Wise Men came from northern Iran to search for the Son of God. So Jesus is cool but organized religions are horrible.
@ADUAquascaping
@ADUAquascaping Жыл бұрын
Plus, Scythians migrated all the way into western Europe in 800 BCE, so Europeans are both Yamnaya and Iranian Aryans. The Scythians integrated with the Celts. And Aryans call themselves Aryans after their mythical homeland of 'Arya', which is the Pontic Steppe. The oldest domesticated horses don't come from Iran like this documentary tries to proclaim. They come from the Pontic Steppe, which is modern day Ukraine and western Russia. This has already been determined by archeology and genetics.

Very glad that iran peaked your interest. Its definitely recommended to visit isfahan, tabriz mashhad and tehran however you can find beauty and culture all over iran specially smaller towns and villages. From a tourist perspective it makes sense to visit those cities and their landmarks and then if time allows explore the other parts. Happy travels.

I have always believed iran is a terrorist country as told by the propangastic media, same way the ill motivated media talk of Africa as a continent where poverty and diseases manifest. Am shocked with irans unmatched greater civilization . Excellent documentary.

“A young muslim man from the village tends to the monastery” this phrase embodies Iran’s tolerance of differences of beliefs, but alas people think Iran is a bigoted country just because our government is the Islamic Republic. We might be a Islamic Republic, but we protect and take care of all religions within our borders.

India and Iran have a lot of history. Iran had the Avesta, India had the Vedas. Parsis took asylum in India and flourished there, and are loved by Indians, and Parsis love their Indian nationality. Iranians, and Indians were one people and migrated then split off, one went to Indus valley, and one went to present day Iran. Persian was one of the official languages of India before the British came. Some Punjab people have "Iranian neolithic farmer" genetics.Punjab in Persian means "five rivers" Some of the Gurus like Guru Nanak wrote poetry in Persian. The Persian Ahmad Ustad helped with the Taj-Mahal. There are so many more connections.

One correction the language that people of Tabriz speak is not Turkish. It is Azerbaijani Turkic language which is not the same as Turkish. The translator made a mistake while translating it from our Azarbayjani language. Also at 30:15 local turkic dialect is correct. Our language has a lot in common with Persian and other languages that our other Iranian compatriots speak.
@outlawfly664
@outlawfly664 Жыл бұрын
One other correction. Ancient Azeri people used to speak Old Azeri (now extinct) which is linked to other Iranian languages, particular the Talysh dialect, it had no Turkic roots. The only reason their language became Turkified was due to Oghuz Turkic Invasion/migration. The fact that he claims it's his native tongue is historically and culturally incorrect.
@aliazarmehralparslan6067
@aliazarmehralparslan6067 Жыл бұрын
@@outlawfly664 There's no such thing as Turkified, nor anything called "old Azari". Azerbaijan is the name of a region and anyone who lives here regardless of ethnic background is an "Azeri". Today most Azeris are Azerbaijani Turks (Also known as Caucasian Turks). People of Azerbaijan before the Seljuk migrations spoke a variety of different languages from Caucasian languages such as Lezgin and Albanian to Talysh, Tat and Gilaki, but after Seljuk migrations this region's language became predominantly Azerbaijani Turkish. So like our ancestors (The Seljuks) we have an Iranian-Turkic-Caucasian/Caspian root and we are proud of it, but ethnically we are TURKS and there's no changing this reality.
