For those complaining about the mouth : This step is called layering for a reason, it is to build the location of the features and begin to block initial values. Because the light hit the model from the front it is tedious to get the lips proportions right from the 1st layer but like the chin area corrections are possible and necessary in the next stage. The rendering layer should correct harsh lines around the lips and curve up the hair flow as well as smoothing out the neck shadows. It is really awesome that he get so close on the first pass without going crazy on the eraser so the texture of the paper and confidence of the first lines can be preserved. For most peoples it take a lot of back and forth with the eraser (taking breaks between session sometimes) to reach pin point accuracy.

Pay attention to how he dealt with the muscles around the lips before he started to draw the mouth. That’s why the characters in the portraits done by Chinese always have upheaval mouths which look way bigger than they should have been,

@@everettwhite9874 it severely hinders the natural learning process, take this from me who wasted years of "practice" by using grids. you just learn to copy box by box whilst completely ignoring the absolutely necessary fundamentals like perspective, 3d space, anatomy, values etc. it's like trying to learn how to write by copying the curves of each letter whilst not knowing the alphabet itself. there is no such thing as cheating in art but you are cheating yourself out of the skills needed to be atleast an intermediate draughtsman/woman.

You can also try making grid bigger and then you kinda try to combine grid method and freehand drawing, gotta keep both of them in mind, not rely on grid completely

That’s the Russian way of draw which invaded the art academies in china decades of years ago. Yes, he’s drawing correctly and skillfully in a boring way. It’s nothing to do with the talent but years of hard training. Trust me, I used to be one of them.

yep. true blocking takes training and practice. you don't have to have talent to block, you just need technique.

I've been looking into the Drawing Academy course, which is also here on KZbin. The instructors are Russian..Upon observing their videos, I've noticed that they are really elaborate, methodical in the way they block their drawings. I have been tempted in taking their courses. But I feel it may be too rigid for me regarding style. I block portraits in free style but I use a combo of techniques. Nontheless, interesting observation

Boring for you maybe. For a real fine artist that isn't boring at all. It has depth and meaning. Also that he describes the muscles around the mouth in a linear way does not mean the mouth is too big. Shading would have solved that. Yeah I am sure you where just as good with your strange comments. Seems a bit like envy to me.
@rayjoo9401
@rayjoo9401 Ай бұрын
@@hedonismbot3274 in China, most students trained by art academies do portraits in similar ways. So did i. And I’ve spent decades on getting rid of such a system which is extremely harmful. I’m much elder than him, and I have no envy to him.

This is what I wish SO CALL FINE Artist who teach WILD LIFE would do, instead of TRACING FROM THE PHOTO, be it their own, or from a magazine, book or someone else photo. I makes if more like cheating. to be teaching how to TRACE, and then copy from the photo. without KNOWING the anatomy.

Looks nothing like her though. If you reimagine her original face in a 3d environment and your portrait in an original environment they'd look really, really different. Don't try to draw what you know is there, draw what can be seen.

Looks a little similar to the ref IMO but I agree, there’s some parts that make it look a little off to the original reference, around the nose and lips. Technique’s still pretty good though
