I fish with him a lot. He's throwing a 4" Cane Thumper (Green pumpkin red or Watermelon red) on a VMC Sleek Jig 1/4 ounce.

When would you use a 1/4oz black vmc marabou hair jig for smallest in new hampshire? I'm brand spanking new to hair jigs and just bout the 1/4oz in black for bass. So just thought to ask the pro.

That size would work best for smallmouth bass in river current or windy lake conditions.

Medium or medium light rod

Both can work for finesse. And for all around finesse smallmouth bass fishing, a medium would be preferred over medium-light

St Croix "a little spendy" is quite the understatement. Try to justify dropping that kind of money on a rod to your wife when you have kids to feed
