Fun fact i learned in history class: Medieval executioners had their ears cut off so everyone would know that they were executioners, and that is why they had the hood. Executioners were death row prisoners who agreed to execute instead of getting executed, which is why it was important to mark them in some way in case they ran away.

But atleast you could be drunk on the job to dull the feelings associated with doing a murder.
