My money is on him wanting to do it survival , talking about doing it survival, and even starting the process on stream. Then he probably realized the monumental task ahead of him, and instead of making himself go insane trying to no life this process in survival he did it with world edit. Since the focus of the prison was not that he was making it, but that it would be used as a prison for story beats and fun content. Honestly I’m not angry that he did this since again the focus isn’t on him making it, but using it.

one minor note: creating the seagrass and kelp formations like that is quite easy with a trick known as failed retraction, it's occasionally used in technical minecraft to get otherwise-unobtainable block configurations. it's not useful for much, but is handy in a pinch for certain setups.

tbh, i think technoblade talked about how many elder guardians were roughly there because dream had to share the prison plans document with him to plan the escape stream, and it was in that moment (aside from vast quantities of obsidian) that i went "oh, he absolutely used world edit and cheats". idk why people are so angry at this being pointed out, because its not like it detracts from the build or the story that revolved around it

It would actually be bad if it was easy to make a largely inescapable prison in vanilla. If it was that easy to throw together a way to severely trap random people (not kill, trap), servers would be ruined. It makes perfect sense that the more legitimate a prison it is, the more you would definitely have to cheat to create it.

I’ve made my own large build out of 51k waxed copper blocks in survival and I don’t need to tell you that it took months to flatten an area, mine the copper, smelt it, afk the bee farms for 51k wax, and build the thing with diamond tools and long distance railways. I cant imagine how long it would take to legitimately mine 800k blocks of obsidian, and place them in a complex redstone structure, all without messing up once.
