Because I want a smooth start, I put the knots at my fingers, and am much more cautious about getting rid of twists and knurls at the start. Picking from the outside of the outer loop creates a split braid at the start, allowing you to run the main braid through a loop to secure zipper ties...

Hi, thank you for this! I was just wondering, at the beginning you say that it goes down to about 1/3 of the length you start with and I was wondering if that's going down to 1/3 or losing 1/3 please? Just trying to figure out how much to account for as lost length

This lace loses around a third, so you end up with something two thirds the length of the un-braided loops.
