Finger Talkin' by Rik Emmett of Triumph
Progressions of Power album
I scored this transcription by ear when I was going to college and slowing down LP's to 16 speed. Just my little interpretation of his 70's classical / jazz acoustic solo. A real work out: Rick is a world class player. I even added some strings at the coda (complements of Omnisphere) I used a Ramirez classical. For video, just an iMac video cam. The original recording Rick made was on a steel string acoustic--or probably a semi-acoustic electric. The only steel string I have is an ovation and it's no good for miking in a studio so I used my classical guitar instead.

Nice job, Rik would be pleased. Back in 1999 when I saw him solo he was taking requests. I was right up front and asked Rik to play Fingertalkin. He did it but unsure if he remembered it well. He looked at me and I gave him a nod and smile. He probably hadn't played it in forever.

@ravbav73 Thanks so much! Yes, I learned it all by ear. No CD's or DAW to use back then. I was in college taking classical music and I would sit there after hours with headphones trying to notate this as best I could. Later on, my knowledge of timing and rhythms in general grew way more sharp.

How long to learn this song? Well, it depends on your experience to begin with. If you have a wide background of rock and solid classical technique and practice it daily and you play at an intermediate level or above, probably a few months or so to get it polished and memorized. I had to learn it from scratch so it took longer.

thank you for commenting and I have been waiting for months for UMPG, who has sole rights to publish Rik's tunes, to get back to me via email to authorize me to publish it privately so I can send people to buy it online on my publishing page. It's professionally notated, tabbed and totally finished. :)

Mark Galavan I was under the impression tabs were like a company's secret recipe. It's not published for everyone to see but if someone figures it out then it's fair game. Can you get exclusive rights to how something is played? That would be like having rights to lyrics which would require you to get permission to share lyrics to songs. I can see how someone might throw a tantrum if you're making a profit off of them which it seems like that's what you're trying to do (I personally wouldn't do that but I'm not you). Basically what I'm getting at is this, does someone legally require permission to share tabs to a song if they created the tabs themselves? Also, what's to stop someone who purchases the tabs from you from posting them on ultimate-guitar.com? An agreement that ultimate-guitar would have to stand by?
@markus777
@markus777 10 жыл бұрын
s0medudeonline The version I have made is fully notated, far more than just tabs. The original author would always get royalties off any such sales and rightly so. I don't see a problem if permission is granted. Unfortunately, people DO steal other's tabs and post them in ultimate guitar and so on but they are not detailed enough to call "professional" scores because they are ambiguous rhythmically. Not precise enough for my liking. Nothing wrong with ultimate-guitar for the novice, intermediate or whatever who just wants to read it for fun. Hope that answers your question :)
