Van Halen performed there. I believe it was earlier in the same day. I'd like to think that if I were Eddy Van Halen and I watched Triumph perform and payed very close attention to Rik, especially with this solo, I'd just witnessed I had been shown the fuck up. Rik Emmet is one of a kind! A master in rock and roll guitar playing. One of the very, very best ever guitar players.

I saw him in San Antonio at an Old mission that they turned into a performance venue, you're right there at the stage no barricades or anything like that very little security because the people that go to see Rik Emmett are trustworthy, many are apiring musicians learning from the Masters

I'd put it up against anyone from that era. In case you're not aware, their entire US Festival set is available on DVD (including DTS Surround Sound) from Amazon for 15 bucks. Just search on "triumph us festival", most definitely money well-spent.

If this were someone like Eddie Van Halen people would be saying “Sucks, overrated.” but because it’s Emmett everyone’s in awe. His playing here is honestly very sloppy, he’s much cleaner in studio.

Well, considering he is often running and playing at the same time, playing straight out of the amp with very little effect also, similar to how Nuno does it - pure, clean sound. Rik Emmett is quite highly regarded as a guitar player. Heck, the man wrote a column for guitar player magazine for over 12 years. He is a prodigy.

I was having a "senior moment", so I just checked. 😉 This was the line-up for "Heavy Metal Day": Quiet Riot Mötley Crüe Ozzy Osbourne Judas Priest Triumph Scorpions Van Halen I also noticed from the same source that VH was paid $1.5M to perform. Taking inflation into account, today that would have been nearly 4.5M! 🤯

Triumph / Rik Emmett made the other bands look like amateurs on that day... That includes the mighty VH thanks to a bumbling, stumbling DLR. Just my opinion.

And you’re certainly entitled to it, music is one of the most subjective things in the world, if not THE most! Hard to believe he’s now 68, yet still very much as alive and kicking. He’s released over 20 solo and collaboration albums since he left the band in a variety of genres… Jazz, Blues, Folk, Classical, you name it. In fact, that’s the main reason he often gives for leaving Triumph, the desire to branch out to other styles (which neither his record label or band mates were willing to go along with). Like Rush, that’s one of the things I admire about him most... He does his own thing, record companies and radio airplay be damned. He's been on a touring hiatus since 2019, but published a book of poetry just last year called “Reinvention”. I’ve gotta pick that up, even sight unseen I’m sure it’s awesome. Anyway, easily one of the most talented people I’ve ever seen. Brad Delp (RIP) and Michael Sweet have some unbelievable pipes, but this guy, oh man. 😳

I've been a huge Emmett fan for 40+ years now, and I've actually had the opportunity to meet him on 4 separate occasions and he was so cool each time. He's a seriously talented musician and has been such a positive influence for me for a long time.

Music is certainly one of the most subjective things on the planet and given that, people enjoy listening to whatever twirls their beanie. Judging by audience reaction, looks like that would include the half-million in this crowd. If on the other hand you're inferring that Emmett is some sort of sub-par musician, you need to give a listen to one of Triumph's three platinum albums or better yet check out some of his solo material. He continues to write and record at age 69, some 40 years following this performance.

Context…there was a time when we didn’t have 24/7 coverage of guitar A concert was often the only time you got to see a guitarist’s chops; we all used to go and learn as well as rock out!
