to make the finger more firm, in sports that are proper to finger dislocation or sports with constant impacts on fingers (volleyball in that case) they use tape to ''harden'' their fingers, or simply if you had a lesion or a wound in your hand, then you cover it in tape. hope i helped :D (btw i use it alot)

When a ball comes at your fingers at 100+ km/h you're pretty happy to have them wrapped with tape It also gives some extra grip to manipulate the ball (more spin or changing it's direction etc )
