No matter how hard you play, how light strings you use, how much you lower the bridge - it will hurt anyway. There's just no other options except to overcome pain till you build callosity on your fingertips. Just don't stop.

It's also important to remember that when your fingertips are soft (from being new or not playing for a very long time), you'll have to press down a bit harder, which hurts a bit. As your fingers get tougher (only takes a few days), you can press lighter, and should eventually get to nearly zero pain (except for some *extreme* high note bends, which *should* hurt because that's your soul coming through...). Practice!!!

Also, something that compounds the pain issue; is that until the fingertips are hardened, soft skin does need to press with more force than hardened skin to achieve the same net force pressing down on the string. The upside is, when the pain begins to subside, it can do so pretty quickly.

@jimmy56349 жыл бұрын
This is a great approach. It also should be noted that learning to relax your fingers on the fretboard is also a key element of chord or single note playing. Try tapping all your fingers loosely on a tabletop to get the idea and then transfer that movement to the fretboard of your guitar. The truth is you do not have to press extremely hard to ring a note, you just have to learn to relax your fingers and "target" the fret as Andy is demonstrating.

@27scole8 жыл бұрын
Nelson Cunha First of all don't worry about it. It's gonna settle in if you let it. There is no pattern to stick to. When i sing i naturally come up with different things, i don't even know what it is. So the answer is to familiarise with eight notes after the 1 then after the 2, 3 and 4 until you get a feeling. Then make it 2 and 4 or such and you shud be good to just strum and let yourself come up with something. Or maybe try 1, 2 a a 4 a. You know many people teach to count, i never count :) I just feel it and that's how i remember it.
@nelsondcunha31568 жыл бұрын
27scole I know what you mean my uncle always say to I count 1234 but I think when I sing I don't need worry about how many I go down and up in strumming, so I normally play all down without need to count 1234.
@27scole8 жыл бұрын
it surely good to count if you have to to get familiar with something but i wouldn't make it a constraint. it's just a tool. when you sing you better don't think but feel. pretty straightforward stuff

Please reply: I've been playing guitar for a long time and i have calluses and everything so I'm not a beginner. For some reason i would get a sharp pain on a certain finger and it won't go away for about a two weeks. The pain is as if there's a splinter there but when i look there's nothing there and the pain isn't just there when I play guitar but also when i do everyday things with my hand. It's irritating because every time this happens i have to wait two weeks just to play guitar again. If you know what I'm doing wrong please reply. Btw i don't press very hard on the strings and i like to play the guitar tuned down a half step a lot.

@daveevans14108 жыл бұрын
+ahmad ta .... a good guitar helps .... if you got a cheap guitar it makes it worse . You still will get the " pads " on your fingertips etc... but trying to play a bad guitar will hurt a lot more . I have been around someones house and they have a cheap bit of shit .... after 30 seconds my fingers have had enough .... but on my guitars I can play for hours . comprende ?
@daveevans14108 жыл бұрын
+ahmad ta ... use a small dab of vaseline for a while on the tips of your fingers . Even after your fingertips get hard you should still use it . Your fingertips get so hard they end up with grooves in the middle of the pads and that can make you " click" string string if you dont get your fingers exactly right . Its getting that combination of firmness but not harshness on the strings . There have been times when I stopped playing for a few weeks to let the "grooves " in the fingers heal back because the string would slip back into the groove of the hard pad on the tip . It really pissed me off .

Dave Evans Will it be easier to push down on the guitar strings when the calluses fully form? (I've been playing for several weeks and have mini-calluses right now). Am definitely taking your advice on the vaseline and resting.

Sumatha Thanks Sumatha, I really appreciate it. How long/often should I dip my fingers in cold water?

Also try flat wound or poly web or nano web strings. I use flat tops on my electrics and it helps me play for a lot longer and the sounds are still great!

Mr. Andy sir, When i develop blisters either from extended practice sessions or breaks in playing, I ussually puncture the blisters and fill with super glue. Just my own DIY, probably not recommended for the squimish

Play until your fingers bleed, then play for another 2 hours. Eventually, your finger tips will feel like the skin on your heels and your there. Done.
@Skurt446 жыл бұрын
wouldn't advise it, you can permanently damage your fingertips like that. best to just maintain a constant schedule for practise so your body gets used to it and starts developing calluses
@patrickryan18216 жыл бұрын
I never damaged my fingers permanently like that lol. You gotta play through the pain. I was learning this difficult bach piece and played until my wrists were swollen. Iced em, went back at it again.. only way

Patrick Ryan No, that is not the only way. The best way is to just play every day for an hour for a week or 2 until you develop calluses. Playing until your fingers bleed is a great way to weaken your skin.

Easy trick for anyone first playing guitar or banjo is to super glue your finger tips.

The best way to cure finger pain is to play until you form calluses.

I've been playing for only a few day, and the pain is gone. I don't have callouses, but it just doesn't hurt anymore.

I find that wrapping each finger tip with a bit of masking tape does help ease the pain a bit, and it's easy to replace each piece of tape as it wears out, with little to no adhesive residue.

Good Morning Sir. I always watch your tutorials. And Sir truly your videos, tutorials, teaching processes are beyond my appreciation. Just One question sir, I have been suffering from Psoriasis. That is why whenever I try playing the guitar with my bare fingers, the outer skin of the tip of my fingers dehisces. But when i try to play the guitar with Silicon finger caps, i can play it very well without much difficulty. So should I continue to use finger caps? Or should I leave using those caps, thinking that they might be useless in long run?
