You can actually change your setting to where it doesn’t automatically add every blue word to known words when you accidentally click the next page. Idk if you already knew that because this was a year ago. But I thought I’d say it anyway.

Want to make one showing use on a iPhone/Android? The smaller display makes it seem very busy/hard to navigate. I’m surprised Steve/LingQ don’t have their own tutorials. Steve makes HUNDREDS of videos about language learning, but I’ve never seen one where he specifically shows how to use his app. I’ve seen plenty where he talks about how great it is, but never a tutorial. Maybe it’s out there, I just haven’t seen it. Also, when I searched “how to use LingQ” this was the first search result!

I still don’t understand how you are supposed to use it to learn a language. You can’t just know all the words of one lesson. When are you actually supposed to complete it? When should you actually move known words up a level and when to turn another blue word into a LingQ? It just seems so unintuitive

You just move onto another lesson once you understand most of it, so you have to actually memorise the words, then they will naturally occur in future lessons :)

I suggest turn the auto known words (when flipping the page) off. That's a very stupid thing and idk why they added it. The only reason I could think is if you already know the language quite well and just new to the app

Nice tutorial. But there are some mistakes. For instance Linqq translates "möchten" by "to want", which is wrong: >Sie möchten= you would like< The verb is not in the infinitive but in the conditional ". I want (= Ich will) . I'm not convinced in learning a single word without context.The same word used in a different context will be expressed differently depending on the target language.

Every time, I see three translations for the selected word and they are sometimes totally different from each other. I know it's best to select the first translation but what if it ends up wrong? What if I learn the wrong meaning of a word? Are they not sure enough about their translations?? They should make sure to give the correct meaning of each word. But I want to be assured. Most of the time the translations are right. Right?? BTW, thanks for this tutorial. It was really helpful 😊

Any mistakes will be cleared up when you see that same word multiple times in different contexts. Let’s say that I tell you “kupple” (made up word) means “small”. But then you read another sentence that says skyscrapers are kupple. Well that doesn’t sound right. And then you see another sentence that says bears are kupple compared to cats. Then you’ll start to understand it’s actual meaning as “big”.

Words can have multiple meanings, depending on the context. Just choose the correct meaning for the context you reading.

I year ago they were very close to releasing Thai as a language on LingQ, but what they need is to translate and record the course named "mini-stories". They had a guy that did 20 of the 60 stories, but that person seems to have abandoned the project midway. there's an interest in the language on the page, some people in the forums have even offered to chip in for a translation. It went nowhere, which is pretty frustrating. Do you know any native who could translate those remaining stories into Thai and record themselves?

Pretty much the only thing they need when they add a new language is this course translated into the new language and read out lout by a native speaker. Saluton Aaron. :-) Here's the thing about LingQ that I don't get. You went thru a few words on the first page, and then went to the next page. I did that myself awhile ago. Why would it assume I know every word on the page? Just because I wanted to look at another page, doesn't mean I'm an expert in everything I see. I did this at first to skim through a few pages ... now my Italian account has lots of words that I supposedly "know." Is the answer just to be diligent and never move off a current page until I've marked every word? Also, how do you decide what "comfort" ranking to give words? I've been through this same problem with flashcards. Some words I don't know at all are easy to rank, others (let's say, "vorto") I know completely, no problem. What about a word like "daŭrigi", which I know but have to think about a moment? Or maybe I just shouldn't worry about those middling words. Keep up the great work!

I don’t put too much thought into what shade of blue to mark the word because it doesn’t matter that much. It is pretty arbitrary, but after you use LingQ for while, you get more used to your own scoring system. And yes, I use LingQ more for intensive reading than extensive reading, so I go slowly and make sure to mark every word I don’t know before turning pages.

ok what am I doing wrong? My interface doesn"t even look like that or has the version changed since 2018? I find it absolutely maddening. I click on a verb that is obviously a tense and it gives me the basic or infinitive version.... I know the Spanish word Tener but when I click on Tendra or Tuve it says the word means Tener or to have. One month is enough for me, this app is horrible to use.....

Most of the time I just use pre-built decks on Anki and Memrise. If I'm creating my own deck, it's words/phrases that I pulled from a movie, book, or song.

Thanks for this great overview! Sometimes something I'm reading on LingQ is split between two pages and to read a full sentence I have to flip to the next page but then when I flip back all of the words have turned white (as they should)--but is there a way to "undo" this last word update so that I can finish the sentence but not accidentally add those words? It hasn't been too huge of an issue because I can go back and tap on the words that I don't know but it's still an inconvenience. Hoping you might know of a solution.

I wonder : how does it works for phrasal verbs such as pick it up ? Does the system recognise pick up as a verb or does it only recognise pick then up as two different words.

It gives you options for both. If you click right on the word it makes the word a LingQ but if you click sort of near the word but not right on it (especially when the word is already highlighted) then it picks the phrase. Takes some practice to do but it can definitely handle it.

Very useful tutorial...THANKS A LOT FOR THIS I’m new to LingQ...and I’m B2 in European Spanish. Would it be possible to do another’s tutorial but with the iPad set to ENGLISH? and just SLOWdown a bit when you’re showing which bit on the iPad that you’re pressing..because it’s a lot of information to process for a first time LINGQ user. Also could you explain how to IMPORT stuff on LingQ and what other resources it offers? Also is it obvious how you know what level each lesson is? and how to set a level if it’s required. Also can I choose specifically to have lessons in European Spanish as opposed to South American Spanish? Finally...what package would you suggest to start off with...6 months?...how many LingQ does that get you?...or would you run out of available LingQ’s....? A lot of questions I know...but I’ve been trawling the Internet and KZbin and the LingQ site...and it can be very confusing in an information OVERLOAD kind of way.....yours has been the most tutorial that I’ve found so far...easily. Saluton Aaron! My problem with LingQ is at a more meta level. I’ve gone thru for example all 60 mini stories in Italian. I’m not sure what else to do. Is it really just picking lessons at random? Or do you pick some kind of “path”? And at a more detailed level, should I listen without reading, or should I read and listen at the same time? If I listen without reading, I’m totally lost, but if I read at the same time, I pay more attention to reading than listening. My primary goal is learning to speak to people. Dankon mia amiko.

Switch things up. Keep repeating. It's all about repetition and keeping things interesting. Once you get too bored just put one approach on hold and look for content that is more interesting/ fun again

I've just started using it. It's a steep learning curve, and the UI can be clunky or confusing or do things you don't expect. I think once you familiarise and find a study approach that works for you, it's going to be pretty great. The shear amount of content is great, especially since you can relatively easily import things of interest to you. I'll probably use my phone to just listen to lessons (the android app isnt great for me) and then use laptop/pc for reading and studying.

Actually I think it's pretty genius. But I would rather start using it on my mobile phone (at least I though it was easier to handle then when looking at this video). I just clicked on the very first story and then it gave me the option to "read" it line after lime. So I could click a button that read it for me, then I clicked on translate to see the full phrase, then I clicked on all individual words one after another to save them on a deck to review after. I would go through a few lines and then click on the right corner on the bottom thag offered me to review my deck of individual words and it would be like a memorie game. I wouldn't try too hard to actually remember it actively but simply often "guessed" which would be the right answer. The next day I'd review it again and add more lines etc etc. it offers every now and then to rate how well you know a word and based on thaf I guess you'd see the card more or pess frequently to review till you know it.

I am super confused... So you click on the very first lesson and you get bombarded with a huge text full of words you don't understand? And you have to choose yourself how well you know a word? I feels more like an app that lets you do most of the work and not like an app that guides you through the process of learning the language. I use Babbel for learning languages and it guides you through the language by starting with very simple, short phrases, like how to say hello, how to introduce yourself and the most common used words, etc. And it memorises how well you know a word by how often you use it correctly, not by asking you to tell the app how well you know it. It's sad because LingQ offers a lot more languages than Babbel but it just seems so confusing.

Yeah that's accurate. Particularly when you see how the dictionary definitions are done. It's all crowd sourced. I guess they didn't want to pay to use real dictionaries so the definitions are entered by all the users and saved. Of course, most users copy and paste definitions from real dictionaries... or Google translate. A lot of the definitions are Google Translate. That said it's still a pretty good dictionary despite being crowd sourced and it's easy to look up lots of words quickly which is a pain to do in my reading apps. And LingQ has a lot of good reading material for beginners.

paul walther But how are you supposed to properly learn the language when there is no explanation whatsoever how conjugations, word order, etc. works? You don’t learn it by simply translating individual words in a load of text.

Florian H. Wave you might be surprised at how effective reading can be. But yeah, you probably won’t want to start here. Get a textbook for beginners first.

paul walther there are professional dictionaries included in it. Some languages have 5 or 6. The crowd sourced part is just what people have chosen most often either by using the included dictionaries or writing it out. You never have to accept the crowd sourced info at all.
