I almost gave up on this one! For the first half of this art meditation, I was really in my head. I was feeling impatient and paying too much attention to the results. I made a "mistake" and wanted to give up. After a short break, I went back to the page and finished my doodling. In the last two minutes, I found my sweet spot of flow state / connection to my Self. Ahhhhhhh...it was worth sticking with it :)
Art supplies used in this video:
- watercolor sketchbook
- watercolor brush pens
- water brush pen (filled with water)
- Sharpie marker
Tip 1: you can complete each phase of the process (the watercolor brush phase and the paint marker phase) as a standalone meditation, or you can extend your session by including a mindfulness practice in between, while the watercolor dries. Sometimes, I'll create a few watercolor blobs for myself to come back to another day when I really need the benefits of mindful scribbling.
Tip 2: do this practice directly in a sketchbook to prevent yourself from getting too attached to the outcome. Let it look terrible, if that's what it wants...it's about the process and how you feel, not the end result. Done as a regular practice, this exercise will help you let go of self-judgment. I am reminded of this constantly :)
