Great video I just started my first time today dropped 50 taps and have 100 trees all over16 inches so hope I don’t screw up the final boil!!

Hey i just a few tips. Im teaching my cousins wife to do maple syrup so i am sending her this vid. i filter many times in my operation (50 gallons syrup last year). dont wait til the very end to do the heavy filter. i use an old one about when i am on the hydrometer and it gets the bulk out. another option is to let it cool in a refrigerated container for a week. the sugar sand will settle out and stick to the bottom in a sludge. just pour off the top and bring it to your final mark and then the syrup will go right thru your final filter. still cleaning the little bit of sugar sand you just made with the direct heat. also i put the large final filter in a 40 cup stainless coffee urn that has a spigot for bottling. i put the lid on to help hold the heat in too. also another big tip is get your filter hot and wet. don't wring it out but you can squeeze. (wringing tears the fibers which will let sand thru.) if you do facebook, join my group i made. Wisconsin Maple Syrup Producers. (We let in the neighboring states.)

just finished mine too. Live about an hour north of Detroit. Could have kept gathering sap from the 6 big trees in my yard but already did three batches and was running out of junk wood to keep the evaporator burning. Probably got about a gallon to a gallon and a quarter of syrup this year. enjoyed watching. take care

If I can add some advice? I realy don't know about dishwasher microbe cycle. But we used place bottles in some water in them and around them is baking area of the stove. And place it around 100 C degrees. But that works ok. As for bottling i have advice: Because you are putting HOT stuff into COLD bottles, there is always risk of cracking, expecily bottom of the bottles. My advice whould be, to preheat the bottles in water pots(casserole dishs), so bottles be hot and waters to be there to keep them hot, so you can pour if safely for bottles. :D I'm glad that you maked great product, hope you sell all of them. :D

The walls will be damp at most but not sticky. It's the water that's evaporating not the sugar. I think people get confused on that. That sugar sand makes good candy! If I remember correctly you just line a baking sheet with parchment paper and put it in the oven for enough time to melt it together. Let it cool and break it up into maple rock candy!

I use plastic bottles what temperature should I bottle in plastic. We do about 16 to 18 trees at home?
@TheRealPhilHoward2 жыл бұрын
Tapped my first two trees, technically one that branched, boiled down my syrup and prefiltered it before final boil as I've seen others do on videos on here. Got my temps up to 219 F and went to do a final filter and it just sat in the filter not really doing much. The filter absorbed a fair amount of my syrup and the final product still had sediment in it too. These are syrup filters. Any advice for better and efficient filtering? I see yours looks like it slows to a drip eventually. What do you do to combat this! Thanks for the great content!
@SSLFamilyDad2 жыл бұрын
Depends on the filters you are using. Try a synthetic filter and a pre filter. Also keep the syrup hot on the final filter, get it from the stove to the filter quickly
@TheRealPhilHoward2 жыл бұрын
@@SSLFamilyDadwow! Thank you for the reply! Much appreciated! So these are definitely synthetic filters and the syrup went from stove to filter. I was filtering on the countertop next to the stove. It wasn't much at all. I only had 5 gallons of sap I was boiling down so it should have been close to a pint but only a bit more than a cup came through the filter. Any other advice or am I on the right track?

Not sure if this rule applies to syrup, but I would think so regardless of liquid. When measuring the gravity of wort (or again, any liquid), it should be done when the temperature is near 68F/20C if you want to take the numbers you get at face value. Otherwise you have to adjust the value you get based on the temperature of the liquid. Just food for thought...now I'm off to consume yogurt with maple syrup...
@SSLFamilyDad6 жыл бұрын
This hydrometer is specifically gor syrup and so it has the cold and hot numbers. 66 brix for vold measure and 59 for hot
@TheSmagzilla6 жыл бұрын
you can measure hot cold or in between. there is a chart. i believe the red line is for something lower than 219 tho.

I have one very large silver maple in my back yard. It's probably 36-40" in diameter. Do you think it would be worth tapping it next year? I know silver maple sap is one of the least sugar content saps. With only having one tree I have thought about it and wondered if it would be worth it. Too bad it wasn't a sugar maple!
@SSLFamilyDad6 жыл бұрын
I wpuld say yes, one trick is you could freeze some of the sap until you have enough to boil. You could get 1/2 gallon or more of syrup off that tree in a season
@OffgridwithJayandJen6 жыл бұрын
I tap my trees, one being a silver maple, it is added to the mix with no problem. I get less sap from my silver than the others which are red maples but it is also smaller in size also. Tap the side of the tree that faces the sun the most, it helps. good luck.
@TheSmagzilla6 жыл бұрын
tap all the trees 10" or larger in diameter. if you have full crown yard trees they have more % than woods trees with just the top canopy. i had a large 36" silver put out 4% last year and it filled a 4 gallon bag a day from 2 different taps.

I was just wondering, because you said you reuse the cloth filter. But do you wash it after you’re done and if so do you wash it with washer fluid, because that can effect the taste of your maple syrup to. Really enjoy your videos! Thanks for sharing.

2 Questions ... I boiled my first batch too long and it's all sugary ... Can I add more SAP and save it ? And could I use a coffee filter to strain the "sand" or does it take a special filter ... Thank You
@SSLFamilyDad4 жыл бұрын
You could add more sap and try and boil again. Coffee filters dont really work well to filter syrup, I would recommend a cone filter designed for syrup

Thank you for sharing your maple syrup process, it has been very interesting and informative! My husband and I love your channel as many things you are doing on the farm we plan to do once he is retired from the Canadian Forces. I just have one question about bottling. Do you not have to run the bottles through a water bath canner to ensure the syrup is properly sealed? Or is just relying on an air vacuum seal enough to ensure that the syrup won’t spoil?
@SSLFamilyDad6 жыл бұрын
Syrup actually does not spoil as long as it is sealed ( and probably even if it is not). As long as the bottle is sanitized and the syrup is boiling when added to the bottle it seals air tight. The cooling sucks the lid on and the seal inside the lid keeps the seal. No need to water bath can or anything like that which is nice! Very similar process with honey. I believe the high sugar content prevents spoiling

Beautiful product! I was a certified surgical technician, I think that "sanitized" is a more accurate term to use for cleaning your bottles, when "sterilizing" anything, as soon as the item hits the air or you touch it with your hands it is no longer sterile. Not a criticism just an educated observation. When you sanitize the bottles you are killing all the germs that may be on the surfaces. I guess it's the professional in me that cringes when KZbinrs use the word sterile. Just saying!
@SSLFamilyDad6 жыл бұрын
Lol, very true. Sanitize would have been the proper word:)
