Remember the old days.. a nice 60w bayonet fitting old style light bulb.. Now there's so many different types .. blue light, white light, slightly whiter bluey light, big screw cap, small screw cap, push in , twist in, don't touch the bloody thing with your fingers so you have to hunt in the kitchen drawer to look for the puller outer thing that came in the packet.. long gone... Halogen, Super Halogen, Super Duper LED.. I reckon I've got about 50 different bulb types in a box under the stairs... why did life get so complicated.. and don't get me started on coffee..🙃🙃🙃

Referring to the switch line in the ceiling, cutting a channel in the coving is the only way you are able to get around the coving, but when you come to the ceiling I would have cut a channel about 200mm to 300mm wide to the first point. That enables you to drill the joist that you need, to feed the cable through. If you cut the ceiling neatly with a multi tool, you can either put a new plasterboard patch back in place or the piece that was removed, much like repairing a badly placed spotlight. That’s how I do it anyway.

Get the ones that come with a plug/socket. E.g. the ones from BELL Lighting. Or alternatively, get your own plug/socket like the Blue Click plugs. That way you can leave the fittings unplugged for IR testing. You could even manufacture a test lead socket for R1-R2 & Zs testing too.

My parents got a whole place full of 12 V halogens (GU 5.3 I think) installed in the late 80s, in a ceiling full of fibreglass in more or less close contact with the lights. They've been replacing sockets and choc blocks left and right for decades now, the sockets fail every few years. My dad's replaced all the choc blocks with ceramic ones by now but the wiring still gets baked. There's three huge 400 or 500 W transformers with switches on the secondary, each controlling no more than two to four lights. I'd love to replace the whole lot with 230 V GU10 LEDs but that'd be a lot of nasty work, possibly even trying to fish new cables if the old ones don't reach. I't actually 2.5 mm2 3-core (brown, blue, yellow/green) so it could be used for mains voltage but I'm not sure if all the cables are long enough for proper termination.

Given the age of the place, that coving could well contain asbestos, so not the stuff to cut and create loads of dust from, even if it hasn't and just being precautionary.
@1paparico
@1paparico 3 жыл бұрын
Fibrous plaster,essentially plaster of Paris. Plaster and wadding made in the 1800s, no asbestos. why would there be? Its fine dust though,should have a mask on whilst cutting. But asbestos no way. get your job closed down if you start thinking like that, look into what asbestos was used for to get a clue as to where you would find it in a terraced house from this era.

I like the flexibility of different colour temp so I have a mix of Philips Hue and Ikea Trådfri lamps at home. I automate the hallway so it changes throughout the day as it’s quite dark and I want it to feel more like daylight as I pass through there. That’s a bit different than a 4000K GU10 but have you seen the ones you can alternate by turning them off and on again within a certain time? First time it’s warm white then flip the switch and it’s cool white (and vice versa).

I like to install 4000K in kitchens and other work areas (unless someone specifically asks otherwise) but 2700-3000K anywhere you might want to chill out, relax or sleep. I specifically avoid anything above 4000K on outside lights, especially those near a window or door as the insects do love blue light!

I don't mean to alarm you but I was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2016 aged 30, I had blood in my wee with no pain whatsoever (if you have pain it might be stones) anyway it's not the end of the world. You will need a flexible cystoscopy to have a look in your bladder, which aren't pleasant, I get mine every six months now under general anesthesia. A good stud, metal and electric cable finder and the tongue would have worked well to address the issue Jordan at Artisan did something similar with the cable tongue when the rods did not worked it may have allowed you to get over the old coving. I hope you save the coving cutout with a furring strip you could reattach their cutout old coving and the filling would be straightforward and maintain the coving. On the coding stuff cannot agree with you more the problem with books like codebreakers is that it should only be used as a first step guide. It should not stop you thinking and looking at the merits of each individual property the danger is that the book is used as a crutch the exercise becomes a box-ticking (compliance) one and not risk based. The danger could be you downgrade something that’s not dangerous but could become in the near future - addressing it now helps to avoid the problem actually happening.

@ Thomas Nagy, 11:04 you mention farmers getting bent out of shape about work you'd done. I have struck this a few times over the last 30 years. Don't ever think that it was your fault that the farmer ended their life, there are other more serious things, like poorly performing children that don't want to take the farm over (because university is so much better than getting a trade). I lost my older brother to suicide in 1986, the thing is, once someone has that in their head, there is nothing you can do to save them, although I tried. :(
