I eat it every day!! (I live in Finland) -small sidenote to you guys: Finland is not a part of Scandinavia!! That would be only Sweden, Norway and Denmark. If you add Iceland and Finland it will be the Nordic countries.

The oil in the salmon soup comes mainly from the oily salmon. The cream they add after the soup is finnish has also oil or grease in it, but the main part comes from the fish.
@WyattandReyka
@WyattandReyka 4 ай бұрын
Very interesting! We were wondering about that. The oil definitely didn't take away from the flavor though. Just curious, really. Do you know why the potatos had so much oil too? Or is that just a product of being fried? Or is that how they're normally prepared?
@wili91
@wili91 4 ай бұрын
@@WyattandReyka I think the potatoes may have some spices on them and to make the spices spread more evenly oil is added. But mainly the oil is because of the way that they are cooked. When you make those type of potatoes in the oven you only need to add a little bit of oil, but when they are fried a lot more is needed so that they don't stick to the pan. And yes that orange oil on the salmon soup is from the salmon itself, the cream added of course has fat in it, but it doesn't make that orange color.

I liked your reactions when you tasted different foods :) Reindeer meat is delicious and in my opinion it's the best just as you had it, sauteed and with mashed potatoes and lingonberry jam. It isn't really everyday dish here in the southern Finland because it's so much more expensive than beef and pork. I'm not sure about Lapland but I guess they who live there and know some reindeer owners can get it cheaper by buying it directly from the producers. The weather in Helsinki area is quite different now than at the time this video was recorded. An observation station in the center of Helsinki says that at the moment there's -17.5°C and 44 cm of snow :D

Thank you so much! We're really glad we had the reindeer how it should be served 🤗 And for sure when we went up into the lapland it was really popular to see Reindeer available in the restaurants and around town but it was a bit difficult to find a restaurant that served it in Helsinki. And woah! It is -17.5°C in Helsinki right now?? That is soooo cold. 🥶
@oh2mp
@oh2mp 4 ай бұрын
@@WyattandReyka yeah, that's the temperature in Helsinki right now. This has been colder winter than average. I believe you know that reindeers exist only in the north and you must drive over 600 kilometers north from Helsinki to the reindeer husbandry area.

@@WyattandReyka Reindeer is naturally dry, because it's game and does not have fat content because they are not fed in a pen for best taste quality but roam free to find their own food. The dish you had was the authentic, peasant type of reindeer dish that people in Lapland ate for centuries. Nowadays one sees more reindeer recipes with bacon and/or more butter added etc. I hope you had a good time in Finland. Welcome back.

The potatoes are paistinperunat or paistetut perunat. Which is basically just sauteed potatoes. They're first boiled and then sauteed in oil and sometimes butter (or both) and then seasoned liberally.
@WyattandReyka
@WyattandReyka 3 ай бұрын
Oh makes a lot of sense that they’re boiled first. Literally soooo good. 🥰🤗
@unknownentity8256
@unknownentity8256 Ай бұрын
Well the potatoes are done at tori usually with a wok pan and quite a generous amount of sunflower oil so it's kind of like fried but not really, so explains the oil at the bottom. Most of the oil in the salmon soup is from the fish but a decent amount of fat comes from the cream milk that is commonly added but not always. Also we don't use artificial sweeteners for our pastries, or if we do it's very rare.

Lol. Sugar is sugar to americans, I guess. And yeah we're always learning. Perhaps a bit of a stretch to compare american blueberry pie to a Finnish sweet bun but felt like the flavors were similar even though the shape and consistency of pastry/blueberry filling were different. Still CRAVING another blueberry sweet bun though now that we're back in the United States and can't get them anywhere

Hard and sour rye bread is the heart of Finnish cuisine. Reindeer is really only eaten in the North. Salmon soup is ok but it's almost always made with imported Norwegian salmon, which is the only fish that Finnish people buy from grocery stores. Korvapuusti and blueberries are found everywhere.

If one needs to find out where a traditional food was first introduced to the region the steps are quite simple. You try all the varieties of said food and the worst tasting is the original, others improvised and improved on it to be different.
@WyattandReyka

Hmmm. Interesting! Could you elaborate? Do you mean that the original of a food is always bad and the changed versions by other cultures are always better?

@@WyattandReyka IN a region. Region for example being central Europe, western Europe, southern Europe, the Nordics all the way to regions of the other continents and sub-continents sometimes countries even. Then there is the fact that for example spices were introduced as a means to extend the shelf life of a food before it wen stale, well, the food went stale at the same rate but that fact was concealed by spices overpowering it by volume for a longer period. Thus the taste was originally a secondary or more subsequent characteristic what with spices being O'Riginally prrrtty Xpensive where they didn't Xist. Just like any high end commodity that was sought after.

Reindeer itself eats lot of vitamines because winter is long and dark.. kaamos means polar night. No sunlight at all. They can still see. Vitamines are stored behind eyes. Reindeer eat only natural food. I think it's the healthiest meat. That your food in restaurant was poron käristys. Looks like too dry imao. How i know.. my dad is Sami and makes best poron käristys😅
