Continuing with food! Excellent! I was looking up Finnish cuisine on a whim last week. Back at culinary school, they threw all Nordic food together and hurried us through it, so I'm building an interest for what I've missed out on. And I definitely like how different people approach pancakes around the world compared to the popular candied ones off the griddle like here in the states.
@Anniarvaja6 жыл бұрын
Food is my favorite! :D There are many special Finnish food and I think I could cook or bake somethint else if you guys like these videos. But first time in IHOP or in other pancake place in US was really exotic experience because our pancakes and crepes are totally different.

I drown my pancakes with pure maple syrup. Then again, we put maple syrup in everything here in Canada. :P

It's different indeed. By the way, I liked the cardamom. It made me smile, I notice how people have expectations with terms because I was cooking Japanese for a friend and asked if he would like okonomiyaki. "What's that?" "Oh, a Japanese pancake." He was very surprised when I served it to him. Anything you'd like to cook would be lovely. Part of my deep interest in cooking is how it reflects culture and social elements, provides an avenue for artistic expression, and the preparation is so rich in formal and natural sciences. There's always something to pursue and I like learning about things I'm not yet familiar with around the world. Thanks for inviting all of us to learn about Finland!

Kiitos paljon Anni, I have shared your video in a Finnish group on Facebook. Many Americans of Finnish descent are learning more about their roots. I know what you mean. I looked at all of the channels I'm following and so many are Finnish, ranging from those who made collaborations with Anni and Lauri (like SoE, Duudsonit, etc) to random interests. Just happened like that. But it makes sense. I'm more likely to find Finns for "Saint Urho's Day" the day before St Patrick's Day because they make more quality interaction and I don't need to use parkour to get away from people and their vomit.

In UK we have Shrove Tuesday, the tuesday before Lent starts (Mardi Gras?) and also call it pancake day! The ingredients are more basic, and we fry the pancake batter in frying pan . There are competitions on tossing the pancake in the pan to turn it over, we see who can toss it highest.. but we do eat them any time of year as well, usually in UK we put lemon juice and sugar on them .. they are usually eaten early evening, but as a one off meal, not as dessert ..but we in UK are strange and many people do different things for their pancakes!!

In the Netherlands we eat pancakes as a main food in the evening. Our pancakes are really thin, like 2mm thick, and baked in a skillet. We eat them with sucker, maple syrup, jam grated cheese, bacon etc. In restaurants the pancakes are a bit thicker and can contain everything from apples and other fruits to (shoarma) meat, vegetables, cheese and sometimes even some liquor. I should make some Finnish pancakes too sometime soon.

In poland we make them very very thin, and fry them on a frying pan like a minute or less, not bake them in the oven. Then we put white cheese and like fold them in half 2 times or put some jam and roll them into a delicious tube. You can put pretty much put everything you want in them, but there are like the most common things

I think we have stolen your tradition. :D
@cognomen91426 жыл бұрын
It's from when Finland was part of Sweden, so I wouldn't exactly call that you stole it - you inherited it. Friday was a fasting day so in the Swedish army the officers ate a feast meal on the Thursday, and in the 1700's (when Finland was still part of Sweden) it became tradition to eat pea soup as main meal and to eat pancakes as dessert. Later this spread to everyone in the army and then it also spread to the rest of society (schools, lunch restaurants, homes etc.).
@mikewest31086 жыл бұрын
The batter is pretty much the same as I use but I don't use cinnamon or cardamon but I do use vanilla extract. I cook them by pouring the batter a bit at a time into a hot skillet with a little butter melted in it and frying them. They end up being about 16 cm circles that I stack on a plate and top with butter and maple syrup but you can top however you like. I may try the baking method.
@Anniarvaja6 жыл бұрын
Yep, we also do crepes with this method in Finland. But baking in oven is much easier! :)

Hi Anni, hope you and Lauri feel better soon :) When I was in Helsinki, I ate some tiny fried fish (a few cm long) served in wax paper bundles from the fish market (for tourists with euros jumping out of their pockets of course) near the cruise ship port. They were crispy, chewy, and a bit spicy and sweet, with bones soft and small enough to eat as well. Perhaps they were sprats or anchovies. I'm no gourmand but it was definitely top ten best dishes I've ever eaten. They might have been deep fried, even? Any idea what dish it would have been? I do not remember. Would be great to see more Finnish cuisine videos on Finland Friday. Something about fish :D

I dig pea soup, split pea soup! That was so cool! And yeah, there are some interesting differences between Finnish and US pancakes. Hot cakes, as they're often referred to here in the US, are fluffy, much smaller, usually made with plain flower, are cocked on a griddle and typically eaten for breakfast. However, I really like cardamon too! I've added it to waffles before, very good! I'll have to try it with US style hot cakes. ;)

Also: I usually make my pancakes fluffy. To get them fluffy you can use more eggs (I use 4) and seperate them and beat the eggwhites until they are stiff, Prepare the rest of the dough as usual and then gently mix the stiffened eggwhites (hahahaha, I said stiff! *giggles childishly* )into the rest of the dough.

Great video! I will have to try this with Sanni (my wife). I've been getting this American Style Pancake Mix (Mississippi Belle, I think) from K-Market/Prisma and making "Jenkki Pannukakkuja" for breakfast on Saturday or Sunday mornings, with maple syrup of course. My wife has made another American breakfast/Finnish dessert: waffles. We have eaten them with jam, fresh fruit, and even some ice cream, and never for breakfast. When you compare American breakfast to any European breakfast, you no longer wonder why some many Americans are overweight.
