05:56 Nice! You got Jomala church which happens to be the oldest building in Finland!! It's built in 1270 - 1290.

@3:25 Rinne means hillside or slope. @7:40 There are churches in the far north as well, I believe the most northern one in Finland is in Utsjoki, but they are newer. The most northern medieval church that retains its original look is in Keminmaa. Church of Alatornio near the Swedish border is slightly further north, but it was rebuilt in 1794 and only some parts of the walls are from the older 1500s church. But mainly the medieval churches are in the southern parts of the country, and more towards the coastal areas, where most of the population was (and still is).

I lived 1 km from a medieval church as a kid. Most of those are in active use year round and some in summertime use.

"Rinne" means 'slope', and it can be used for even slightly rising smaller roads in towns. Halikko is now a part of Salo. "Tiekirkko" is a church that is open (usually in summer) and you can visit when passing by.

Yes there are lightning rods on churches

Is there much lightning in Finland? We've had lightning in a snowstorm a few times in the past here in the US - pretty crazy and crazy rates of snowfall (one time we had 4 inches (10cm) of snow in 1 hour due to this)

4:35 If you look at the corner of the roof right above the rain water drainage, there is a wire. That is one part of the lightning protection system. Not really good one, as it makes so sharp turn (inductance of the curve might make it less tempting route to the ground), but at least the church is still there, afaik. Likely the bell tower as the highest building will catch most of the strikes anyway.

Those are regarded as regular churches, only older, although not as old as in the rest of Europe, since Christianity came to Finland, for the most parts, later than to the rest of Europe. Catholicism came from the West and orthodoxy from the East. The fight over the Finns' souls is never over. You can go to church on Sunday, and people do go to church, especially more so during Christmas time. We do have thunderstorms and a thunder god too; Ukko himself. As it's the forest and the nature, which are the Finns' true church, maybe it's time to leave the present behind and head for a journey to the past...: "Breakthrough in the discovery of DNA in ancient skulls buried in water in Levänluhta", "Leväluhta, the Iron Age mystery", "Ukonvaaja - Trailer #1", "The mysterious origins of the Finnish word for God", "Aaron’s Tavern Ancient ritual sites in Finland", "Spirit(s) of the Sauna: Seen and Unseen Beings in Finnish Folklore", "Lapin Noidat - Lapland Witches - Finnish Mythology", "From Kalevala to Middle-Earth: Tolkien's love for Finland's MYTHS!" and "Kalevala by Elias Lönnrot-The epic poem of Finland (12 things you should know)". And then Christianity and medieval times arrives: "The Swedish Crusades to Finland | Fact or Fantasy?". Moving on to Halikko, where the Halikko parish dates to 1300s. The church there is believed to date to 1440 AD. The manor next to the Hakoinen hill forth is mentioned in king Erik of Pomerania's letter from 1414: "Halikon museo silta 2015", "Collections of the National Museum of Finland: Treasure of Halikko", "Hakoisten Linnavuori - Hakoinen Castle", "Medieval Sword Discovery - Medieval Dead - S02 EP05 - History Documentary", "Halikon kirkko - Tuntematon Salo 101" and "Hakoisten linnan nousu ja tuho (Suomen linnojen historiaa)". Also this is part of the story: "Kirkko ja kruunu ryöväsivät ", "Finnish Sorcery Traditions", "Aaron’s Tavern Witch execution trials in Finland", "Vaietut Juuret - Silenced Roots" and "Karelian Wedding (1979)". To ease back to future; a visit to the Electronic Museum Salo: "Made in Salo -näyttely Salon elektroniikkamuseossa". Finally: "15/19: En etsi valtaa, loistoa (Jean Sibelius) [Advent Concert 2013]" and "White Night Magic - FINLAND".

I recently watched a video where an American pastor (who was very religious) came to visit Nordic countries to find out about religion here. One place he visited was somewhere in Sweden, and the local pastor told him that the area is jokingly called the "Bible Belt" of Sweden because the average number of people who come to Sunday mass is eleven. Elsewhere in Sweden, it is four. I'd say that in Finland it is probably about the same. Very few people here actually go to church. One difference between the U.S. and Finland is that over there, going to church is an important social function. People see their friends there. They may also feel a social obligation to go to church, that is something that The Simpsons has made fun of several times. Marge wants them to go to church because she's worried what others will think if they are not seen there. Then Homer sleeps through the sermon because he isn't really interested. In Finland this tends to be the other way around: if people go to church, it is because they want to hear the sermon. They don't necessarily know anyone there, or talk to anyone. There are exceptions, there are smaller religious communities also over here who expect their members to be active. But most people go to church only for weddings and funerals.

I hadn't played this map before, but just a map that contains all churches of Finland, not only medieval. The medieval churches are mostly in southern parts of the country and the first were built on Åland and southwestern Finland. The church on the 3rd round is actually the oldest still standing church and the oldest stone building of Finland. You asked about the lightning. It is very common in summertime and all churches and other high buildings have lightning rods and conductors.

That second catherdral in my home town of Porvoo is very familiar. I had my confirmation there in 1983, and in 1996 the funeral services for my dad were held in the smaller wooden church on the same premises. It is used for ordinary church services but also for concerts. I once saw and heard an excellent rendition of Händels Messiah oratorio, as one of my friends played in a classical orchestra performing there. Great acoustics! The roof of the cathedral burned down in 2006 due to some drunken youth setting it on fire. It was renovated and reopened in 2008.
