Sanna Marin did NOT steer Finlad to join NATO. In fact, Marin came under criticism in January 2022 after giving unauthorized comments to foreign media stating that Finland is not joining NATO. In reality, Marin put Finland's NATO option at risk just before Russia attacked Ukraine and Finland finally had the need to use the long-held NATO option, so it seems quite strange that the BBC claims that it was Sanna Marin who pushed Finland into NATO.
@sampohonkala4195

Bullshit. The only authority in Finland that can make Finland join NATO is the government. The president nor any other authority has no power on the issue. The Parliament could vote the government out but that has not happened, therefore BBC is totally right.

@@sampohonkala4195 In the end, it was the parliament - not Sanna Marin - who decided on NATO's application for membership with its vote, as proposed by the government. After that, The formal decision to apply for NATO membership was made by Niinistö as presented by the government - again not a decision by Sanna Marin. The membership application was signed by Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto - not Sanna Marin. And even though it was indeed the Marin government that applied for NATO membership (due to everyone's pressure), it still seems quite incomprehensible that Sanna Marin is being praised for steering Finland into NATO, when the frogs that came out of her mouth in January 2022 were taking Finland in a completely different direction regarding joining NATO. But it doesn't matter because in the end, it was Sanna Marin who stood in front of the media and announced that Finland was applying for NATO membership (while that task would have belonged to any Prime Minister), people then see it as this beautiful, brave, empowering young woman is the one who takes Finland to NATO. ..And by the way, who has now traveled to Brussels to confirm Finland's NATO membership?

The prime minister does not steer the foreign policy of Finland. It is the presidents domain. The president commands direct majority mandate from the people to make all foreign affairs and security decisions. ANd president Sauli Niinistö is extremely trusted to do the job well, And he has done it - despite a publicity prome prime minister trying to pose as "a leader". Sanna Marin has her private foreign affairs opinions and has also made them public, and confused foreign media and leaders alike. It is a media invention that Sanna Marin steered Finland to NATO. She did nothing of the sort. She was against NATO membership 1 month before Russian invasion "during her watch" (sigh1 prime minister has no "watch" over Foreign affairs policy). The events she failed to foresee and beware, over took her. But she is skillful in playing along and riding the current thing.

You are correct. The most important people in Finnish NATO road are our president Sauli Niinistö, our foreign minister Pekka Haavisto and our defense minister Antti Kaikkonen. They have worked relentlessly starting from December 2021. Sanna Marin was not that very important person in the process. She was, however, very keen on getting the credit of it.
@Robespierre-lI
@Robespierre-lI Жыл бұрын
You say it's a "media invention" but i wish to politely remind you that one of Russia's major offensive weapons in the past decade has been disinformation. It's recently been revealed just how widespread and how effective they've been - which is to sauy, far more than most of us imagined, even if we were paying attention to it the whole time. One study found that 70% of the comments on news channels on KZbin (in other words, where we are typing right now) could be traced to foreign disinformation and propaganda operations. That's just one study. Finnish people should be very attentive to the possibility that Russia managed another small victory in this latest election. They want right wing politicians in power and they want maximum instability everywhere in Europe. Never forget that. Finland MUST be defended on all fronts, including on the digital "frontline"
@Robespierre-lI
@Robespierre-lI Жыл бұрын
By the way, if you look at the comments under this video you'll start to see more obvious patterns. Lots of comments trying to ridicule Marin for her reported "partying.". Lots of childish comments that pretend to come from "Finnish" opponents to NATO. And lots of comments simply trying to be politically provocative, to get an emotional reaction. That's all the more obvious end of the Russian operation. I'm not overly worried about Finland, however. There's such a strong tradition of being relatively impervious to Russian nonsense, that we should worry more about less savvy Western allies.

Your country can also do similar things with strong investment into a good education system, my man. I noticed the first time I visited Norway that everyone below a certain age spoke perfect English with varying accents depending on the type of media they consumed/places they traveled. Yet people over a certain age either spoke broken English or couldn't speak it at all. I asked about this and found out that it pretty much directly coincided with the years that Norway started mandating English classes in schools.

She is only catching so much heat for it because she is a young woman in semi-tight clothes. The former Finnish president, Urho Kekkonen was known for his "sauna diplomacy". He drank heavily and went to the sauna with soviet leaders for a good part of the cold war. But he's a man so it's okay. Also, her party grew its share of the votes. @@karltanner3953 Kekkonen was an autocratic. Was he ALLOWED to be questioned? Isn’t there a legitimate left-wing criticism to Marin’s behavior, which is that *any* leader should be subject to criticism for living lavishly while their people suffer?? You have to keep in mind that the political games we play in this increasingly starkly divided world can result in one supporting the very type of leadership one would typically reject. It becomes a matter of political expediency to support anyone the other side doesn’t in the name of some vague ideology. You mentioned the Cold War. Ironically, the US behaved the same way during that time, supporting right-wing dictators primarily because they were anti-communists. So, instead of supporting a leader for who that person was, the US supported simply because of who/what that person was not. We should be willing instead to criticize *any* leader who doesn’t have the best interests of his or her constituents in mind. It’s called “looking in the mirror”.

This is a positive sign indeed. But it has never been this way before. While Sanna Marin was exceptionally bad PM, we haven't had true conpetition against leftist block until now when we have a slight possibility to get the Basic Finns - the only true opposition party - into government, together with NCP, the just-very-slightly-more-right-than-the-other-leftists party. Yeah we had the Basic Finns in our government once before, together with NCP and Center party, but back then the Basic Finns was just a fake opposition, conducted by completely corrupt leaders which have later elected out of the party's lead and left the party entirely thereafter.

Using the term far right completly off topic what it means when historians and others defined it is just in hand for some parts of liberal mainstream. With liberal i do not mean the US term, i mean the classic european right wing or ,, Center"-right Liberalism, Neoliberalism, Liberal-Conservatism and so on. Using far right for everything exposed of migration ( Well more than,, they can come but must be registered") or keeping the sense of ethnic nations and nation based states and not following the modern concept of individualism in case of gender, define yourself and so on No matter if Finns Party, Swedendemocrats, Rassamblement National, Debout la France, Vlaams Belang, N-VA, FdI, EKRE, VOX and so on, it's the same slure. They might have far right factions and some ideas might be going towards light far right ideas or some groups might be opportunist enough to hold some connections like a ,, wide force " but just calling the whole partys far right is so dumb and is only making this term worth less and helping the extreme factions. Real far right figures like the Wing of Hoecke in the AfD which is clearly far right, CasaPound, Nordic Resistance Movement, Stram Kurs, FN Belgium, LDPR in russia, Golden Dawn, NPD, Jean Marie Le Pen ( Not Marine) or the former Vlaams Blok during his late days and so on are only gaining profit of the wrong used term far right against every classic nationalist and anti - mainstream or anti liberal group or Party. Thats the same dumb thing than calling every Anarchist or Socialist a far left, calling every globalist or pro-multiculturalism a cultural marxist, saying every green only want to destroy your civilication and wealth and so on. Using such terms without any real meaning it will use its worth and meaning.

Sanna Marin made a huge contribution to our country in my opinion. When covid hit, I do not think we could have had a better leader, as her extremely calm, sharp, rapid and confident conduct was something that really stood out in the history of our prime ministers ( almost inhumane how she could handle the situation in an absolutely top notch way) and made me and so many others have huge confidence in her. I do not support her party the social democrats, but she truly rose above that and has been the PM of all us Finnish people. Her conduct regarding the war in Ukraine has been equally impressive. I truly wished she would had continued as our PM, but she has a LONG career ahead of her and we are blessed to have her in our parliament! And I think a break from the PM responsibility is actually a good thing for her personally, having a toddler at home 😊, and after many years of the most difficult and dark years in the world. I hope Petteri Orpo will be a good PM and wish him good luck, will be interesting to see how he can take on the leadership Marin carried with such grace.

Saying they're populist just because they oppose your viewpoint however, IS a very populistic tactic. Shame on you. Perussuomalaiset (Finns party) is a national- and value conservative party, that is right LEANING, but mostly still in the political centre.. Sorry, but Sanna Marin has nothing to do with Finland wanting to join NATO. You can thank putin for that. Also in Finland these decisions are about what the people want, not what one person in power wants. Might seem like a very foreign idea in the UK.

Very militaristic and Pro-NATO party won the elections in Finland (Kokoomus): "Finland’s mission to strengthen NATO’s common defence" (they've got many politicians with fantastic military background, for example Jarmo Lindberg is retired Finnish general and former Chief of Defence, he was also a F18-pilot in 90's)
