@cameroncorrosive925 Various people have made many videos about him; I've watched one from one of my favourite youtubers and then another one from another youtuber. As the algorithm kicks in, it shows me more channels that I've never seen before about people talking about the same thing.

@@cameroncorrosive925 I think you're misunderstanding, OP isn't talking about before, he's talking about all the sub-50k channels the algorithm is currently showing us that are making videos talking about Finn's meltdown. And it's absolutely true, I've subbed to 5 new channels I've never heard of before. It's awesome that these channels now get a chance to fill the void Finn left for videos that talk about the metal scene, history, etc

Finn reminds me of my 5 year old son who is pumped to play a game but when he starts losing it realizes that he going to lose, throws a fit and says he didn't want to play the game in the first place and that he hates the game and yells at everyone and storms off. Kind of like Eric Cartmam saying "Screw you guys I'm going home"

Don’t you see what he’s doing? KZbin has been bad for his head for a while. If you watched him the last couple of years, you know he’s talked about it. So now he’s getting out of the game and intentionally sabotaging any possibility of coming back by poisoning his own well. He’s forcing himself to get out of a shitty neighborhood by burning down his own house, so to speak. Finn doesn’t hate you, bro. But he needs to salt the earth before he leaves so there’s nothing to come back to. It’s genius, actually. And it’s working.

Someome on the comments of the video that Anthony Fantano made about this situation said something that has been living rent free in my head ever since I read it: The person in question proposed a hypothesis that maybe, just maybe, this move by Finn was calculated and his responses intentional. His hypothesis was that Finn was intentionally throwing himself under the bus to control how his reputation online was gonna be terminated, because he has skeletons in his closet that are way worse than "he never cared about music" that he thinks people are close to finding.

I thought that at least for a while he actually cared but apparently it was just an attempt to monetize him seeing Earth Crisis once when he was 14. Also Finn went out of his way to read KZbin comments, respond to DMs, etc. when he didn't really have to and this also sucks because now it's a thing he probably did because he'd get more viewer retention that way.

Y'know, as much hate as I've seen the metal community give Lords of Chaos (a fictionalised retelling of the 2nd wave of Black metal scene, specifically around Mayhem), I think a lot of people miss the point of the film. It isn't supposed to be a 1:1 retelling of what happened historically, it's an allegory for getting too deep into the "poser" mentality. (Trust me, I'm going somewhere with this). Euronymous was a poser in the sense that he kept talking about how much of a dark, edgy, evil underground monster he was, yet at the end of the day, he was as human as the rest of us. It deliberately contrasts the mentality of Euronymous with the genuine evil of Varg, and that got him murdered. We see how beaten up he is about Dead's suicide, about how he reacts to actually burning down churches. The whole film was holding up a mirror to the "TRU CVLT" edgelords who created a culture in which genuine threats like Varg could germinate unnoticed, not realising the consequences until its too late. In that sense, it shows how easy we are to be duped when faced with conformation bias. While not to the same extreme degree, Finn Mckenty showed that we are all cows to be milked when someone starts taking advantage of our good faith. We expect our favoured youtube critics to be honest when engaging in our favourite subjects, and while Mr. Mckenty may not be the most eggregious or hurtful example out there, it should be a big wake up call to metalheads of just how easy it is to miss red flags when you're captivated by conformation bias. I never paid a great deal of attention to his content nor engaged with it to any serious degree, so I had no reason to think he was lying. I'm not immune to anything I just talked about. And given some other individuals who recently came out as supporting well known grifters *CoughWyattsMetalCough*, I think this whole thing should be some serious cause for reflection.

The way he was shitting on bands who don't prioritize making money was insane. I'm in a band and we barely make any money but we do it for the love of music and the scene, and to imagine being as cynically money driven as he is - I'd rather be dead. The dude clearly has no conception of art whatsoever. Like sure, I'd love to make enough money to live off of creative work, but that's just it - The only reason I want the money is so that I can be more involved in art and music, not just money for the sake of money. Can't stand this guy.

With hindsight, it completely makes sense that McKenty didn't even listen to the music he talked about. As another KZbinr commenting on this has pointed out, the majority of his content was about the cultural context and history of the bands he talked about, and so forth, rather than about the music itself (stuff that can be easily found on the internet, funnily enough). But every time I saw him express opinions on the actual music, they just seemed... weird. A bit off, somehow. Sure, people have all kinds of opinions about music, but they're usually coming from some sort of recognisable perspective, if that makes sense. I never thought his opinions were not genuine (at the time - I do now), I just thought he's somehow coming at music from a bit of an odd angle. I didn't watch that many of his videos either, but I repeatedly came away with this impression when I did.

But still, I've been called a poser by squirts who 'discovered' metal two months ago for such crimes as not really being into Pantera (or Manowar), listening to the occasional metalcore album, saying gatekeeping is bullshit, and not agreeing with them when they call other people posers for no particularly good reason.

It's very common. Think about it logically. You start a nostalgia late 90s/early 00s music channel, it blows up and you are now relying on the income and you got a family to support. Eventually the content becomes harder and harder to make since what you did is nostalgia so there is only so many "why did xxxx genre die" videos you can do so you end up eventually turning into a content farm channel doing weekly reactions or whatever to keep up the pace. It was obvious his channel had run its course way before this. He's even said it.
