I consistently saw one thing brought up that I did not touch upon much in my video: the art of poser culture and how this situation impacts it and what it tells us about it. Oh damn I was just calling him that earlier haha nice. He is definitely one. I recognized it pretty quick but then again I only ever watched one video so maybe others it was not as obvious. Can't remember the band but it was clear immediately that he did not know anything about music, or at least looked down on punk as not music.

What I noticed about Punk Rock MBA (having only wathced a few videos, including the Black Metal episode), is not that he is necessarily a poser, but that he has this "ironic distance" to everything he does. It's "I'm listening to metal lol" and no real dedication. I think a poser is someone who like to appear as a community member for social reasons, but don't actually like or care about the thing. Ironical distance hipsters like the thing, but won't admit it to the community for social reasons. Finn appears more like the latter.

Its not really sad at all. He took advantage of a platform that might be wildly different in ten years. He didnt view himself as part of any youtube scene realistically. Hes a harcore kid from the late 80's, 90's. The only people with hurt feelings are the ones who actually thought they had some sort of relationship with him or any youtuber for that matter. There are a lot of bands my audience likes that I can’t get into. Am I gonna call them wrong or smoothbrained for liking them? No! But sometimes even they can offer me something that I can get turned onto. The issue I have with this situation is him insulting the audience that gave him his “financial goals.” These are people who buy shirts, share videos with friends, get your views up. You gotta respect your audience. Also, the Lords of Chaos thing. It’s funny how in MY video on it, I said the exact opposite. “This movie isn’t the final say in the Norwegian black metal story.” Haha!

I have to play the devil's advocate here, cause i watched the interview and he never called smoothbrained people who just like the music of these bands, he directed that comment specifically to the ones demading creators to talk about the controversies and scandal aspects these bands often get involved into, just for the sake of talking about it, like conversation gossip fodder because of their fame and notoriety at a given moment. Im sorry, but encouraging this behauvior on creators and and the audience rewarding them with views is not worth respecting at all and deserves critique, if people took that comment personally and got insulted by it then its time for a good look in the mirror. What really surprised me is that he got the balls to admit all of this out loud without caring about how people would react, and to be honest thats commendable amists all the respectability politics and PR bulshit online with people being afraid of mildly challenging things involving critique of their own audience...

The most insidious thing Finn did was actually engaging with his fanbase, he'd read and respond to youtube comments and answer DMs which is honestly just masochistic for somebody with 600k subs, but turns out this was because he'd get more engagement, viewer retention, and money.

I think the true embodiment of his views on alternative music is that infamous video he made on trap metal, where he in so many words said that the only way for metal to survive is for the scene to be taken over by non metalheads, pretty sure the phrasing of it was along the lines of “this is the future of the metal scene whether metalheads like it or not”. It just showed how little he values artistry, skill, and community, he can’t see the value in something if it isn’t there to make money which is so sad.

Sure you might like it too, but chances, are if most metal content creators, or content creators in general, stopped making money, they would stop content creation all together. But at the end of the day, this is a job for a lot of people. We like to feel connected to them, but a lot of the people we watch would not continue if they stopped making money. I think the single most important story that can help you understand him is his story of showing up at his first punk show wearing a pantera shirt. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, but he was apparently treated poorly and called a poser for it. That would come up time and time again when he talked about gatekeepers and elitists. He said he was already a kid who didn't feel welcome in various ways, and his opinions seemed to really solidify in that moment. Just openly resenting the community because of one experience, and then helping to create his treatment by focusing on it in a negative way.

What I always found kind of funny about Finn was just how obvious it was that he had no idea what he was talking about. One of the big ones was his "helpful hints for bands". As someone who spent years in a very small local/semi-regional band, having access to and the means to have a solid line of merch or to be able to get booked by venues local or not isn't something that's just available for everyone starting out. For him to say stuff like that made it pretty obvious he had no fucking clue what it's actually like to be in a band. Regardless of what level your band is at, it ALWAYS boils down to knowing the "right" people and having the financial means to make shit happen. Why would a venue ask my band that no one has ever heard of to open for Agent Orange or whoever is coming to town especially when there's that other local band that's been around for 15-20 years that the people who run the venue are personally friends with? Stuff like that was why his "advice" was always dogshit and makes me think he probably never went to a small show because his "advice" would be shit like "get booked opening for a bigger band on their next tour". The only way that can happen for most bands is to either somehow have the bigger band know who your band is and like your band enough that they ask you to come on tour with them OR have the financial means to buy your way onto a tour (which you'd be surprised how common that one is). Dude was always very clearly a fraud.

I remember watching his (quickly delisted) video about American Head Charge and trying to show it to a former member of the band that I know going "hey man this dude sounds like he got a lot of stuff wrong" and Aaron just *laaaaughed* and said he sure did. there was something you said there that hit it big time with me: people always confuse knowing-your-shit with being an elitist. it's like the first thing that gets thrown into your face once you prove your opinion has more weight than theirs. anyone who takes something seriously is going to have something polarizing and opinionated to say about it. that's just having passion and knowing what you're talking about. being elitist is different. that's why when someone gets called an elitist, I usually perk up and pay more attention to what they have to say because chances are they've just been falsely labeled by someone who doesn't know as much as they do and had to come back with something. that said, Finn was a poser and did NOT know his shit and still paraded as if he did. elitist. and a big reason I love this controversy is because I called it the entire time and it's been a confirmation to me that my gut is to be trusted.

Despite Finns frankly egregious handling and addressal to former fans, we need to be better than him not by meeting bitter for bitter but by proving him wrong. That metal, rock, alternative these communities do have good folk.

It’s nearly impossible to have a middle class lifestyle in metal media. Everyone who seriously goes down that road hits several ethical dilemmas where they can get paid well to disingenuously cover the music one way or get paid almost nothing to genuinely cover the music another way. In a world where everyone has an opinion that can be blasted out to the internet with barely any invested energy, the only way to stand out is to be willing to say shit no one else will, which is probably just going to be made up or exaggerated drama.

When I would watch his content, I would often hear him talk about how he saw all these bands in the early 90s, playing a gig in some guy's walk-in closet, and now they're huge. And about how much the local punk scene influenced him back in the day, but how he grew disillusioned with it over time and grew to dislike it. So I'm not tooooo surprised that he felt the same way about his own content / his viewers. It often seemed like he was purposefully playing the heel character in his videos, taking dissenting positions and shouting unpopular opinions with a shit-eating grin. Like he was just saying whatever he could to make his viewers mad. Even as far as calling them smooth-brained pretty regularly. The the other times I'd be watching his content I'd think "That was a pretty shallow overview." Or sometimes I'd even be like "wow, even I know that's not entirely correct." So over time I felt like he would just pump out the "wikipedia" videos for views and then, especially in content that came from his livestreams, he would just troll and say whatever he though would piss off the smoothbrained dude-bro metalheads that he imagined were watching.

What doesn't make any sense in Finn's "I was only doing it for the money" statement is that it contradicts the podcasts he did. He got so many guests from scene, including big names like JORDAN FISH for crying out loud. If he really only did it to cash in on a check and call it a day, why go to the trouble of securing interviews like that? That feels like it would be a hassle to work out for any monetary interview in general. At the same time, though, that probably ties back to his experience in the business world. Even still... I dunno, I feel like he probably just got burned by the negativity and lashed out in the worst way possible. Either way, he is probably the biggest example of a poser I've seen thus far in ANY field, if it's true he never even liked music in the first place.

I didn't care too much when I first heard that he'd quit but I only really saw an excerpt of what was said which bsically amounted to "I've made enough money doing this and I don't care enough to do it anymore." What got under my skin is when I saw more about it and how he basically just sat and insulted everyone who followed him for this long. He went after our music taste which he played into for so long, he went after our politics which is the whole basis of the scene and he just went after the culture of musicians and punk rock as a whole. I don't care enough about him to be full on angry but I do feel a bit let down by it all. What I'm struggling to wrap my head around though is the idea that he's gonna be a life coach on LinkedIn? Dumb platform really to begin with but also, after he showed his whole ass during that podcast, how does he think anyone is gonna trust him to give him money for his advice now? It's honestly kinda laughable because he could have just quietly slipped away and no one would have been any the wiser. There'd be a bunch of videos like "Where's Finn McKenty?" and "what happened to the punk rock MBA?" but he could have just disappeared with the money he made and pursued this new role without going on and monologing about his dastardly plan like a moustache twirling villain. Now I just don't see how anyone is supposed to trust a word that comes out of his mouth whether they followed him before or not because a quick google search of his name right now is gonna bring all of this up. It really just seems like he played himself here.

i mean, i never particularly liked him or followed him, precisely because to me it was clystar clear how generic, out of wikipedia and targeted to the youtube algorithm his content was, it always felt like he prioritized marketing and profit first and foremost. So to me what was surprising were not the facts, but hearing him admit out loud the truth himself, id never tought he'd do that, so i really commend him for being honest at least after all these years without caring how his followers would take it, hopefully it encourages people to be more critical of the content they consume. I'm Finn's age and work in the corporate world. It's marketing adjacent and as soul crushing as it gets. But it pays... That ungrateful and dubious hack has no business calling musicians a lost cause and he ought to feel ashamed for ripping the aesthetics and style of metal and punk. On top of that interviewing these supposed "lost causes" on his podcast and lying to everyone. And it's no secret that he's trying to cover for his rightoid wife who called gays groomers while Finn met her fresh outta high-school... (Take a seat over here, Finn). If she was actually serious about *her* beliefs she wouldn't have wiped her channel. I'm so glad to have found this channel, and i think you're awesome. One of my friends from high school was a journalist for a large computer magazine. He's not really all that into computing. The magazine really liked his writing, the pay was decent, and traveling to conventions was appealing to him. Is he a poser? Kinda i guess. The magazine like having him, the readers seemed to like the articles so in the end everybody is happy..Finn had a gift for telling stories. People liked listening to the stories. Everybody got what they wanted so why is everyone mad?

I never really ever listened to his stuff at all I followed him on Instagram cause I thought he was just a troll. 😂 As a musician I don't listen to none musicians talk about music at all. Musicians usually enjoy various styles the hardcorest metal head will listen to bluegrass or jazz another whole genre. Or some real niche style like me southern metalcore or southerncore still holds a special place in my heart.

My thoughts exactly. I know guy back from HS who is still "true punk". Shitty tattoos, string of shitty dead end jobs, hangs around bunch of teens who are in their "punk phase", sleeps drunk on the park bench. All the same shit we did as teens. But he ain't teen no more, he is in his late 30s. Rest of us grew up and accepted that we are adults. I still love metal, go to shows, buy vinyl records from bends i like, but also have normal job, family and music fandom isn't my only sense of identity. Poser/true fan is for teen discussions to be honest.

I don’t think he did anything wrong tbh. And I don’t think he “has no interest in music”. He has band tattoos and no one does this for that long if you have no interest in it. I think he wanted to create content, ended up gaining a certain audience, ended up making a living off this audience, and was forced to create content he didn’t care about all the time in order to continue making money. And at the end of the day, you can still enjoy his content. Not everyone is going to be passionate about their job. Not every actor loves the movie they’re in and not every musician loves some of their music. But they still do it and people still enjoy it, so what does it matter. I also think he has a lot of reasons to be pissed and want to troll the metal community. It’s a pretty toxic place and all they do is shit on him, if he was really fed up, I wouldn’t be surprised if he wanted to hit them where it hurts

I've seen a ton of videos PunkRockMBA put out. Particularly the Black metal one in question at the beginning of this video. And I don't believe he said (at least not as be all end all statement) that what happened in LOC WAS AND IS What Black Metal is about. I feel he was stating it as the incident that brought it "mainstream," as most of today's generation who are into black metal, probably saw that movie and thought it was gospel... And quite frankly. We're all f'n posers! All of us! We tend to wear band tees, often dye our hair (as metal heads, often black) we'll grow out our hair, start dressing like what we see on television and movies, what we see our favorite bands doing. We do. All of us. Young and old. Not saying anything bad. But people calling out posers without looking in a mirror...

I think finn started out actually wanting to talk about the punk scene he came from (hes been around a long time) and show people the cool bands that he grew up going to see, then he slowly but surely stopped making content because he was interested in educating about bands and scenes and more because he had no other meaningful source of income, and the low-effort, low-interest videos took over because people would just hate watch, once it became clear Finn knew nothing about whatever band he was talking about that week people who actually knew about the band would just get into a shouting match in the comments (which in turn would bring more traffic to his videos, and get more people pissed off at his poor takes) and his channel just death spiraled. I think he played into this aswell, the amount of times he talked about really boring mainstream pop musicians and spoke very positively on people who are basically blacklisted in the alternative-sphere (Machine Gun Kelly, The Kid Laroi, Blackbear), he was farming hate, he knew those videos would garner alot of traffic from people coming to just complain about him uplifting corporate trash. I understand that if content creation is your main source of income you gotta upload sometimes when you really dont want to, but Finn just seemed like he genuinely hated everything he made, and it was so visible and clear to the viewer that that was the case. Overall man im not at all suprised he crashed out like this, he became exactly what the hardcore punk kid he was growing up wouldve hated, which has to be a really crushing feeling, basically just selling out your beliefs in the literal sense for a paycheck and clout. I wouldnt be suprised if we get a "I'm back" video in a few months, as after the guy burned an astronomical amount of bridges and goodwill upon taking his leave i wouldnt be suprised if nobody wants to work with his "media management for music influencers" thing.

This reminds me a lot of criminal psychology, and how some criminals will make a scene after they have committed a crime in an attempt to deflect from the fact they did it, or scapegoat someone else. The untrained eye and ear might believe it, but those who have dealt with such people, or know some basic psychology would pick up on it. Finn was basically deflecting and making and scene the entire time to get views and money. He was the criminal all along, but most people didn't catch on to it.

Nearly every music biopic is exaggerated and based on fact rather than attempting to stay 100% true to it's subject. It is made to be entertaining and Lords of Chaos is no different (but is an enjoyable enough movie for what it is).

I watched a couple of his vids a couple years ago about some bands I used to like a lot. It was interesting but never any deeper than what I already knew. He had good delivery though so it kept my attention but never enough to sub or make a point of watching regularly. Hearing this fallout though has been entertaining and honestly to me it sounds a lot more like him lashing out at the audience more than him actually hating the music he talked about. I am sure he had to cover bands he cared nothing about though, that is just part of the YT game and critics have to do it all the time while remaining impartial to their personal taste.

I guess I’m just to old school. I listen to what I like, if it catches my ear I listen. It ranges from classical music (huge Bach fan), rock and roll from the late 60’s to mid 90’s. Also listen to some pop, country, rap but mainly dominated by Early Metal. And I’m a huge fan of J-Pop/Rock and love Visual Kei bands.

It'd absurd to only want to listen to one thing and one thing only. If metal is all you like. Fine. No issue with that. But to tell people they have to only listen to one thing.
