As Finnbogi progresses through his extraordinary life as hero, he grows emotionally to the place of standing with and protecting others. Which eventually leads to his ability of bringing these feuding men into harmony. -His remaining years are spent in peace with a good reputation. A worthy saga! Thanks for this!

I suspected *bessi* was related to the Swedish word *bjässe*, and that also seems to be the generally accepted etymology. Generally it means "a big one" or "a powerful/great man", but dialectally it still apparently still has an association with bears. Norwegian also apparently has "basse", specifically meaning a big man.
@anon33363 жыл бұрын
"Basse" also exists in Danish. "Det var en ordentlig basse"xD

What I like about these sagas even though some characters do have supernatural abilities & the heroes incredible strength & luck, they are always human in their ways. They error, make mistakes and live on farms, they have to resolve issues at the "thing" etc. Makes it much more down to earth and interesting

You should get a small clip on mic so you can increase your voice volume. In some videos it is quite hard to hear you over the sound of the wind. Thanks for the great content you put out.

Really enjoyed this. I find the sagas a bit too much to read, so it's lovely to have a summary. And I love your versions of the stories and the explanations of the language as you go along. You do have a beautiful speaking voice, it's such a pleasure to listen to. And I love the intro and outro of this video! Cool new bit of the intro with the gunslinger bit - love that you include that, because that's a big part of you - and the unobstructed view of your sign-off, tipped hat included! And that lovely sequence at the end with the raven. Such a beautful bird. Love that you moved the video link cards around so we could see it - also helped to focus on the raven and its nest as well :) This is definitely one of my favourite videos - thank you!

I have a friend from Iceland called Finnbogi and clicked on this video out of curiosity. I know there’s a “g” but his name is pronounced like Finnboy
@nikthetrickster9948 Жыл бұрын
Probably because of modern Icelandic, old Norse would be pronounced Finnbogi as is pronounced in this video

How remarkable that name is , "Urðarkottr". Because there is already a native cat of the scree, or rock heaps, in the Nordic wildlife nomenclature: The hermine, or _røyskatt._ Often the word for a scree, _ei ur,_ is used synonymously with _ei røys_ in modern Norwegian. Is the name Urðarkottr supposed to be evoking ferret-like connotations?
@Kasarii3 жыл бұрын
Could well be. Names like Bear, Horse and Otter were common enough, Ermine wouldn't be too out of place.
@MandatoryHandle3 жыл бұрын
This seems very plausible! As far as I know Swedish and Danish has no word particularly similar to "røyskatt", as they call it a lekatt/lækat (which has a very similar meaning). In Icelandic however there is a very similar word for this creature -- "hreysiköttur", from "hreyskǫttr" -- and a quick google search seems to imply that Urðarkǫttr was indeed an Old West Scandinavian word for this creature according to the book "Aspects of Language: Geolinguistics" by Mario Alinei

Icelandic sagas: Come for the superhero action story, stay for the artsy and deeply human family drama Oscar bait.
@digitalbrentable3 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the opposite, actually - most sagas don't follow modern storytelling conventions, so they often come off as kind of incoherent, alternating between moments of heavy handed symbolism and metaphor, to more naturalistic drama, some misplaced mundane anecdotes, random cameos, plot twists, plot contrivances, intense melodrama and lighthearted farce, all with humour grounded in foreign sensibilities. I reckon it wouldn't fare the transition into film or tv drama well. But do you know what all that kind of *does* sound like? Anime. Not normally my cup of tea, but I would watch Viking Shonen.
