Billie Eilish the public "performer" is actually Billie and Finneas together. When they were younger making music in her bedroom, he actually told her "I'm gonna make you the biggest female star in the world." And then he did.

I think in this song, Finneas says "Love is pain" not as a personal experience, but as an observation. Love means sacrificing yourself for other people and that can be painful, but that pain is a good kind of pain because it leads to true love. This is why we say that if a couple is not arguing then something is wrong. Arguments, although painful, lead to growth and understanding as well as new tier of love. Of course, Finneas could also mean that the people we love won't always be here, and that's painful to think about, but it makes us appreciate the moments we do have. Love and pain go hand in hand. Love can hurt, but that pain can be worth the reward. Just my thoughts lol...
