The Finnish speeches during the continuation war were even more idealistic and stubborn, so much so that they still put they shivers down the spine. Despite the ideals however, the western world as well as fate itself had abandoned us by then unfortunately.

There is some bastards below, those who defence Russia's actions and insult Finland. 1. Someone said that we had concentration camps, which isn't true. We had PRISON camps for prisoners of war, and we treated them well. 2. Someone also said that we were barbarians, monsters, but they should buy a huge mirror and see which one was evil, that dirty Soviet Union or our peaceful country where they attacked. If you look at Russia's actions nowadays, you can see Russia hasn't changed. Unfortunately, when i watched criterions of a democratic country and dictatorship, Russia filled all marks of dictatorship.

One of the first victims of the bombing of Helsinki was 7-year-old girl named Armi Hillevi Metsäpelto. And in the Swedish newspapers there were whole page ads that said (in Swedish, of course): " Now the world knows, what it is to be a Finn. You show, what it is to be a Swede." In Finnish: " Nyt tietää maailma, mitä on olla suomalainen. Näytä sinä, mitä on olla ruotsalainen. " And in Swedish: "Nu vet världen vad det är att vara finne. Visa DU vad det är att vara Svensk."

My family has always been very proud of our Finnish heritage, as my grandparents came to the USA during the 1920's. We love our coffee and NISUA ;) Finland was the only country to repay it's war debt after the 2nd world war...part of our Finnish character is being self-reliant and not owing anything to anybody. More than ever brings to mind the Hobbit and lord of the rings stories. After all Tolkien was greatly inspired by Kalevala. In the same way Finns were humble and mostly modest about achievements and the underdog. We got assistance of our brothers! Who recall after this war that even though they were voluntary they realised that it was their duty! Even though we had an undefeatable enemy we won. In form of our independence. No joke! A true story for the whole humen kind to know who rocks who. Who am i to know? I'm a decent of kareli half and completely swedish speaking for fathers in Finland. Horosity was great on both sides. Brave men fought against each other. Because of soviet union, these men paid their lives!

And I dont understand when people say that Finland which broke away from Russia in 1917 should not have been returned back but at the same time they claim that Crimea which broke away from Ukraine under pretty much similar circumstances must be returned back to Ukraine. Would you explain this to me?
@kilppa
@kilppa 7 жыл бұрын
Finland was it's own country for such a long time before that. Before being under Russian rule, it was under Swedish rule, but the country always existed on it's own. Finland also didn't "break away" from Russia, but Russia gave Finland it's independence after long political discussions and absolutely no aggression. Coming back after less than 30 years and trying to take it back by force just because of a pact that they made with Germany gives them zero right to do so.
@vdrugktotoizzaugla
@vdrugktotoizzaugla 7 жыл бұрын
Finalnd declared independence in December 1917, a month after illegal communist coup. Therefore no long political discussion could have possibly taken place between them. Crimea was an autonomy inside Ukraine the same way as Finland was an autonomy inside Russia. Both wanted to secede and both did after an illegal seizure of power in respective countries. Yet the cause of Finland percepted as rightful and the cause of Crimea as not. Talking of history Crimea too appeared to be a part of Ukraine by a strange historical accident, and their secession from Ukraine was predictable and was only a matter of time.

Today marks the 82nd anniversary of the outbreak of the Winter War. The Winter War was a war between Finland and the Soviet Union from November 30, 1939 to March 13, 1940. The Soviet Union began the Winter War by attacking without a declaration of war, and the war ended 105 days later with the Moscow Peace Treaty. The League of Nations condemned the attack and resigned from the Soviet Union on December 14, 1939.

@Cyberspine I agree the Finns to move on. As for the reason the Russian language virtually dominate Karelia is that I've read almost the entire population emigrated to free Finland. One account I read a couple of years ago is a farmer returning to his farm, the Finn soldiers asked him why he was there and he responded that he had burned his barn down during the Tavilsota, just as his father had, and his father's father so to leave nothing for the Russians. He was there just 'making sure'

Thanks to ALL who contributed so that Finland won the wars against USSR, both the winter war and contiuation war (WW2) - won in the sense that we kept our independence, earned in the WW1 war of 1917, and struggled for ever since. Als thanks to all who helped us out in any way. Thomas / Swedish speakin Finn.

Well we were underdog but we had few more tanks and planes than You claim. In the beginning of Winter War we had: 493 cannons, of which 73 were out-of-date guns but still usable. Coastline guns primarilly designed to be used against navy are not within these numbers. Planes:Fighters: 41 ready to get airborne, 15 under repairs. Bombers: 16 (!) ready to get airborne, 2 being repaired. Recoinnance-planes (usually out-of date fighters from 1920's) 57 ready-to-go and 14 under repairs.

2:47 If you look the map, there are no Hungary, Albania, and Portugal. But, Czechoslovakia and Austria (which had been annexed partially and entirely by Germany) are still there. The Soviet Union is also mislabeled as Soviet Russia.

@Mainilanlaukaisija Thank you, despite my studies thus far I was unclear if we lost Petsamo following the Winter War or the Continuation War. On another site, Free Karelia I think it's called, a couple of years ago I posted that Karelian effort could become expansive to include Petsamo despite they're not in the same region, but same effect to their theft

Onko suomalainen ministeri 1:39 kohdassa Rudolf Holsti? Päihittää kollegansa Ike Kanervan lausunnassa mennen tullen. Kokoomuksen miehiä muuten molemmat...

@Mainilanlaukaisija Not ever occupied by Finns? I have a book, written by an English doctor that was touring Finland in the inter war period immediately following the Tavilsota, and I'm almost certain he remarked that while the settlement was small, there were Finns maintaining the port, as it was Finland's only ice free port (owing to the gulf stream) at that time. I'll have another look, but I think the title is Finland Forever.

It was the Soviets who started the continuation war. Hitler had publicly said after the start of operation Barbarossa, that the front would be from Arctic to Black Sea, so Soviets interpreted it as if the Finns had declared a war on USSR. The first shots were fired by Russians, not Finns.

This is finnish... His (Bush)ancestor was Måns Andersson (in finnish Mauno Antinpoika) was Anders Halttuinen's son and Anders Halttuinen was finnish man who escaped from FINLAND because he had so big debt because he didn't pay tax... I hope you undestand. I'm not so good in english...

Respect to Finns! .. re "little military help".. yes allies were slow to react but as of Jan 1940 strong Expeditionary Force consisting of British/French/Polish troops started to be formed .. soviets aware of that and perhaps it was one of the factors giving them incentive to reach settlement asap .. it's ironic how close Germans and soviets cooperated at that time, Germany intercepting Italian arms shipment (35modern fighters and 100000 rifles) and not allowing Hungarian volunteers to transit.
