I am the captain,I am the captain, of an English shipand in every port I have a womanThe blonde one is phenomenaland the brunette is not bad eitherIf I ever marryI will wed The one I fancy most

That sounds a bit like La Bamba: Yo no soy marinero, soy capitan, soy capitan

I think that's pretty much true of sailors of any nationality. A lot of women really go for a man in uniform.

This really captures the true spirit of the song.

Ruaridh McGurk classic! also it was in the ending of Turn a great TV series about the revolutionary war.
Nice slow version of little known ballad - I've not heard for years. much amused by the comment about 'keeping history alive'

This is literally an English song lmao, so the Irish can only sing English songs? That’s not much of a compliment
@photonman66611 жыл бұрын
Music is nice, better than the shanty versions which are so common and don't do the song justice. But that voice is just absurd, it sounds like a self parody. And me not producing an alternative doesn't make this version good.

I really enjoyed this version of the song.

To: H-to-O - I am in agreement with yourself. I find it to be the more authentic (and I say this as an Englishman)since Mr. McGurk's Irish accent and tone evoke the sense in myself that these sailors are expressing their passion in life. There was a sizeable contribution of volunteers from 'All Ireland', many of whom were from coastal areas and career sailors, that enlisted in the Royal Navy at that time. Photonman666 obviously views this as a self-parody whereas I tend to the impression that the song admirably conveys that raison d'etre, that such men felt.

The verse they sing in Master and Commander the far side of the world, shall always be the best then the Jerry Bryant version.
