Incidentally, learning the partitive in Finnish is like being one of the burglars in Home Alone: Walking tentatively around a house full of traps, and just when you think you understand and start to relax a bit, another one explodes in your face!

It's my second week learning Finnish and I've done all the lessons on Duolingo at least one time but I think I can already relate to you. First I thought that partitive means only a part of the object, then that it is analogous to an "indefinite object", then I thought that it denotes an object of an imperfective/indefinite action and now I understand that a don't understand it and just need to keep learning

I've always been fascinated by Finland and the Finnish language but the language always felt like too hard to even try for me living so far away from the country. What I liked about the Duolingo course is that I finally feel like I'm learning something and it keeps me motivated to go one step forward every day so it's been a lot of fun. The tip session is one of my favorite parts because it feels like an actually course , Unfortunately I reached a point where I can't see any tips anymore. I hope the tips will come back in the future at some point because they do help a lot!!! Thank you Aleksi for the review I've been waiting to hear what you had to say about it for a while, hoping my efforts using the app are worth it :)

Moi Aleksi. So, I've been studying Finnish for a few years now and started the Duolingo course a month ago out of curiosity, wanting to see how the language was presented in that kind of medium. I've been through all the content on there and have to say, your points are all absolutely correct. What I've found to be the most frustrating "minus" about it is the inconsistency, especially in the more advanced lessons. For example, in one question they expect "trousers" for "housut", but in another question only "pants" is accepted. There are tons of glitches like that and it gets super annoying. Hopefully, as they work through all their Beta issues, these will be resolved. You're right, too, about the spoken Finnish being sorely absent: That surprised me. On the plus side, however, it's been fun to pick up a few new slang phrases (e.g. "täysi susi"), and overall, doing the modules (repeatedly - it is addictive) has filled in many rusty "holes" in my knowledge. On balance, I give it a thumbs-up.

I quite like how you mentioned learning both the standard and spoken Finnish at the same time from the beginning. While I do feel like a basic grasp of the standard language (aka. the basics of grammar) should be learned first, it wouldn't be such a bad idea to start learning spoken Finnish early on. I would almost compare it to learning formal and informal language in Japanese at the same time. Most Japanese books seem to focus more on formal language, which isn't by no means wrong, but I feel like actively teaching the informal equivalents would increase the learner's understanding of the language in general as well as the sort of cultural context in which the different versions of the language are used.

Kiitos, Aleksi! I was just starting my daily dosage of Finnish Duolingo when you posted! 🤣 Your points are all well taken. Another pro is that the lessons are very well structured for teaching the grammar without depending on explanations, so between the actual lessons and the tips, the program is good for both inductive learners who take rules and ain't them and deductive learners who come to understand the rules through multiple examples. The nonsensical sentences and weird vocabulary are actually proven to help keep the mind engaged and to improve memory of the content. They also make you think about what your hearing so you have to pay attention. Despite the mechanical voice, I have found that Duolingo has really helped my listening comprehension. So many apps are just vocabulary, but Duolingo has mainly connected speech at the sentence level, which is a huge help. Your courses help us learners bridge the gap between the woken and the written forms of Finnish, so thank you so much for all your work! I have to get back to Duolingo. I have lost first place in this week's leader board! Moi moi!

Hey I started using Duolingo a week after the Finnish course came out in beta and I think it really helped me form random sentences, word order (I know it doesn't have to be specific), as somebody who knows the basics already I finished the first section already the first day with all 5 crowns so I had over 1500 xp the first day already which really inspired me. Now I'm going slower and practicing the already done lessons every day. I feel so much more comfortable in my knowledge of Finnish and I can do really basic conversations. And also I've been learning spoken Finnish with Written so I know both and I sometimes mix them for fun. It's really cool to find the ways to make your own sentence! Also cases in Finnish seem quite easy for me after I know the basics, there is a great wikipedia page with them and they are sorted in a table. Very great review of the Finnish Duolingo course! I'm definitely going to use this.

Thanks Aleksi, that was interesting, and I agree with pretty much everything you said. In about 80% of the way though it now, and for what it is (the beta version of a free app), I think it's excellent, especially for practising grammatical patterns. The tips only accompany lessons as far as the 8th row of topics right now, I hope later versions expand that, because trying to work out why the hell a particular word needs to be in the partitive without guidance is tricky! I'd be very interested in reviews of other Finnish language learning tools, I'll be looking for a new one in a few weeks' time!

Half a year ago I started learning Mandarin Chinese on the Duolingo iOS app, and now as a Finnish person I started beta testing the Finnish course a few weeks ago. One problem I immediately noticed is that since there is no support for detecting Finnish speech, you won't be able to practice pronunciation unlike with Mandarin at least on iOS.

Great review, and good points re spoken vs. standard Finnish. I tested the app recently and here’s my two cents worth. Pros Intuitive, user friendly interface. The rewards system encourages newbies. Repetitive word drills help in vocabulary building and retention in memory. Useful (but incomplete) grammar info in the background in the tips section. Synch between the PC and phone app versions works well. Cons It’s in beta - and that shows. There are bugs, e.g. the feedback / error reporting feature doesn’t always work. There were some errors in translation, though not as many as in some other apps. The multiple choice questions make guessing the answer too easy. The test questions are too repetitive and should have more variety. Correct answers are too often flagged as incorrect. They need to allow more flexibility re sentences. The Duolingo app would suit newbies who want a taste of Finnish to get started. But keep in mind it’s work in progress with some bugs to iron out. And there's interesting comments and useful info in the chat area, eg a recent discussion of all the different versions of grandma and grandpa in different dialects around Finland. Moi moi!

Hi Aleksi, I do have a few additions to your review. Some are obvious: 1. tips are only available on the easiest lessons. They still have a lot of tips to write. 2. The course is not finished by a long shot. Not sure how long they will continue, but I heard december will be a milestone. Some are less obvious: 3. The judgement of Finnish to English translation is often too harsh i.e. it has to be *exactly* what DL wants to see or it will fail. That is improving, but it will take time. Use the report button to report this. It *will* get immediate attention, even though the fix may take time. 4. If you have a question (which is not abusive or offensive) people might downvote it, because they don't agree with the contents of the question. The problem is that at -5 the question becomes very hard to find for the language moderators and thus stay unanswered. This is very annoying, but it *is* being discussed. Not sure if, or how they are going to improve this. It will take time and effort. 5. You have to be *really, really, todella* goal oriented. The danger stems from the point system. For example you may want to keep your streak up (+50?, +100?, +1000? who knows) while the course no longer has value for you or less than other learning channels. Another example is wanting to be first in the promotion ladder, even though it does not help with your language learning, because you are just aiming to "click" as much as possible. Bottom line: know when to stop. P.S. there is actually a youtube video on someone who reached +1000 and explains why he is stopping. I had a small discussion about the puhekieli vs kirjakieli with one of the Finns (yes, some Finns follow the course). What we arrived at was that puhekieli would be a "nice to have", but depending on where in Finland you live, it might be hard to choose puhekieli for a generally available tool. As I don't live in Finland the best choice for me would be to show puhekieli as alternative when answering questions and to keep it simple. Most people doing the course are either in very different areas of Finland or abroad. I am almost at the point where I will stop using duolingo, having done all lessons to level 3, because my own course has more to add. I might return later. Thank you for the review. It actually helped me structure my own thoughts on duolingo.

@@AleksiHimself Yes, I've been using Word Dive for several months and am in their "advanced" units, and supposedly have permanently learned over 1100 words, but without much spaced repetition I find that most of the words haven't "stuck" yet, and I haven't taken the time to go back and review them. Every word given has a sentence to repeat (given in a fast conversational tone) so it's hard to repeat and I'm not sure if those sentences are what you'd actually hear in regular conversations. Also I doubt that some of the words given are ones you'd normally use in conversations (like ummikko - monoglot - who would really use that in normal conversations?). I follow up every lesson by looking at and listening to YLE's Selkosuomeksi daily articles, and I have found that sometimes a word I just learned on WD pops up in a news article, so there is some application there. I'm powering through Word Dive since I paid for it and I"ll finish it too, but again I'm not sure how practical it is for retaining what I've learned. I'm intrigued by your own course, so will probably give it a try afterwards. Anyway I'd be very interested to hear your review of it. I know that before DuoLingo finally entered the field with their Finnish course, WD was promoted as a good course, developed by Finns, so that's why I took it. The one good thing that it's done for me is to have given me the personal discipline of doing it daily (for me 30 minutes/day, 6 days/wk) , whereas before I was pretty hit or miss in my personal studies. Kiiti, Rich

I agree completely about spoken Finnish. Standard Finnish will help you read a Finnish newspaper, or a menu in a restaurant, but spoken Finnish would help with almost every other scenario (understanding the waiter, asking directions, talking with friends etc) so it's pretty important, and I feel it should be taught early on.

Idk if you have, but I haven't seen anyone cover the app called Drops yet. it's a vocabulary building app that (in the free version) only permits 5 minute study increments about twice a day. but there's a premium version where you can go for longer but none of the lessons have to cost money if you want it to remain free, they just take longer to unlock. and you unlock lessons by completing them. I've been using it for a couple months now and feel it's very effective at what it's meant to do and haven't seen any videos reviewing the app as far as accuracy or if it's too close to book finnish or not.

In order to do a review you could pose as a Finn willing to do conversations in Finnish for a symbolic price like for instance 5 or 10 euros per hour. You probably wouldn't need long to get an idea of the abilities of the site, and I would love to see what you think of it. I found this review: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2SuoWmrfp14q7s which you could use as input, before you decide. I am pretty convinced your review would be different from her review. I'm doing the finnish course on Duolingo and it's sad to say it, but there's still no spoken finnish there, it's the same formal way from the beginning, and it's already 2023, almost 2024. They should teach both ways there, like in a certain level of the course you'd study the formal, and in another level the spoken one, it would be an option.

I started learning Finnish a week ago on duolingo and I'm wondering what I should do to incorporate spoken Finnish into my learning. At the moment I am using the old tips which I found on a website and the actual exercises on duolingo, but it would be nice to start also learning spoken Finnish to be able to understand people speaking

My "problem" with the Finnish course: it's way too short. I'm already through and it feels like I've only just begun to learn the language. There is so much stuff still ahead, e.g. comparative ("I'm bigger than you"), past tense, etc. I wonder if Duolingo will continue with unit 3.

Another big minus: hardly any dialogues. What sense does it make to know how to say "Why does this shirt cost 200 euros?" when you wouldn't be able to understand the answer you would be given in Finland...

Oh I didn't know about this, last time I checked on Duolinguo was back in 2017, and they didn't have Finnish, I also read that the owner of the RandomFinnishLessons blog has repeatedly contacted Duolingo to add the Finnish language to the platform yet all her attempts were doomed to failure, but now for some reason it's there and I don't know when it happened, unfortunately now I'm already at an upper b1 level and it took me a total of two years of sweat, blood, tears, puss and puke to get there, being doing it inconsistently since mid 2016

Did not know about the tips section, I use the app on mobile only. I think it s good for learning vocabulary, like general words that do not really change in spoken Finnish and as a complete beginner, I found it much easier than other learning options, probably because of the gamified structure. Another thing that bothers me is that they don t have speaking exercises, like they do for other language, where you have to speak back a phrase, the app records you and checks the pronunciation, so I don t really know if I am saying it right, most of the times I feel like I am faking it....like fake singing. Maybe it will be in the upgraded version, it s all up to the contributors and developers. Also, does Finnish have no intonation whatsoever??? Is it really all flat, afirmation, question, story line, seems a bit confusing, especially in listening exercises.

@@AleksiHimself maybe this function will be added on mobile too, when Finnish passes the beta. For me a little bit of grammar is very important to understand how the language works. The various verbtypes and how to conjugate them. For me, I'm using duolingo not for learning, but for keeping in touch with the Finnish language every day.

@@AleksiHimself I actually asked about this, and the reason given to me was that, because these tips are added by the community and not Duolingo themselves, they are not supported on mobile (I don't understand why, but that's how it is). In some courses, Duolingo provides tips written by themselves and those you can find on mobile too. So unless Finnish course receives tips directly written by Duolingo, they won't be available on mobile...

I tried Duolingo for Japanese and Polish but found the flash card nature of it impossible to learn from. There was no instruction on grammar for example.
