Finnish For A Day

Finnish for a day! We experience an epic day full of popular activities like trying a traditional Finnish sauna for the first time and canoeing. We also learn about Finnish history and culture at Arktikum, a science centre and museum every local told us was a ‘must see’ in Rovaniemi, Lapland. We also try Finnish food in a kota, a wooden hut with a chimney that’s a traditional place for building a fire to warm up and enjoy a meal. My dream of seeing the northern lights also comes true and I can hardly believe my luck. We're overwhelmed by the natural beauty of Lapland and our day of ‘being Finnish’ is a major success!

When you are in Sauna you are supposed to pour water to the hot stones so there will be hot wet steam in the air :) I notices that you just sit there but not had any löyly which means the effect of pouring water and feeling warm water steam on your skin.

You didnt threw any water(löyly) to the stove? Sauna is not a nice place without a proper löyly, it moistens the air and its not just dry heat.

You should go to the western north Lapland! There the Tunturit are higher. Like Saana(one of the tunturit) I don't know can you go to the top in winter time. In the not snowy season you can go there by a stairways. When the summer is slowly changing to fall, the leaves are changing their color, it's so pretty! I would definitely put it to the ¨bucketlist¨! I like your vlogs, they make me happy. You do them so high quality. What you guys show, you show with alot of useful information! Keep on making them! You guys did NOT leave the magic back in Poland :) I remember Josh and Ashley visiting that Arktikum place. So cool. The replica of the town in ruins was stirring. Likewise with the sun setting behind the cross at that Memorial. Gorgeous shots of the northern lights. I saw them once, back at my alma mater in Oswego NY. Kinda like watching a curtain of blue and red gently dancing over the lake (Ontario). It was faint, but so awesome. Delighted your wish came true Eileen. You two constantly crack me up. Visit Cape Breton and spend some time hiking (and driving) and you'll see moose. Those snow goggles are similar to those of the Inuit. I wonder if they were invented in both places, separately of one another or if there was historically of migration of people between the Canadian and Scandinavian arctic?

There is a little more to the story than Finland caught between the USSR and Germany. The USSR invaded Finland in 1939 to begin the Winter War. Though they faces vastly superior numbers with more and better equipment, Finland fighting without allies made the USSR pay deeply.

but...the size of the USSR army with more equipment did cause Finland to sue for peace through Swedish diplomats. It was costly to Finland in money and territory. During WWII, when the USSR was battling Germany, Finland declared war on the USSR,, I assume to reclaim lost land. That did not go in Finland's favor and again they settled with the USSR including forcing the German military out of Finland

@@EileenAldis Yup, that's the idea: to lift your body temperature quickly high, you start to sweat more quickly and you feel all the heat and steam (löyly) on your body and then after few minutes you just rush into the cold lake (or snow in winter time). That feeling is something so fantastic and refreshing. And after that you will sleep so good next night!

haha it was our first time ever doing the 'traditional Finnish sauna' experience and WOW was it extreme hot to extreme cold. Definitely something to get used to! By the end we had adapted a little more and it felt exhilarating :)

Interesting to notice the way the Finnish tell you the history of WW2. You say that Finland was caught between Germany and the Sovietunion. I also see in the comment that some say "...our fight against Germany...." Well, I would call that twisting or rewriting history. Reality was that the nazi Germany did not invade Finland - they was invited to come there. That is a certain difference ....right... Denmark and Norway was invaded and occupied .... but not Finland. The Finnish made an alliance with nazi Germany. Hitler himself came on visit to Finland and together with the Finnish leader Mannerheim they made an alliance 4.June 1942. The Finnish wasn't forced to do this, they did it in their self interest in hope to take back the territories lost to Sovietunion during the winterwar 1939. But in the autumn of 1944 when the Finnish saw that they were on the losing side in the war, they switched side - made agreement with Soviet - and demanded the Germans out of Finland. So it was the withdrawal - of the Germans troops north into Norway - and their burning down as much as possible that made the destruction in Finland - not much due to battles and full out war with them. Yeah there were some incidences. The Germans did the same in northern Norway - even more methodically - over a distance of nearly 1000 km. There were no military force that pressed them back (except in Kirkenes/Varanger - taken over by the Soviet troops). The Germans did it to lay down as much devastated territory between themself and the Soviet troops. The Finnish did for sure some U-turns during those years, but they certainly should not - in the world of today - rewrite the history.

After the Winter War and before the so called Continuation War - Finland was indeed in a hard place between SU and Nazi Germany. After the occupation of Norway there was no way Finland could stay neutral like Sweden - SU had made it clear that they would not tolerate an Swedish-Finnish defense alliance. SU remained hostile after the Winter War and made demands to their still then ally Germany for re-attacking Finland - which Germany denied. Germany of course leaked the information of those demands to Finland - which Finns could verify through their own sources. Finland indeed had to ally with Germany - if for no other reason then for the food supply - there was a real danger of starvation because the country had to import grain from somewhere - the war was going on in the Europe and SU was closed - Germany was more or less the only option. Hitler's visit to Mannerheim's birthday was an uninvited surprise - Mannerheim originally a general of the Imperial Russian Army did not really like the guy at all. There was no actual alliance between Finland and Germany either - they shared certain strategic goals - and co-ordinated their movements and supported each other to a degree.

If you visit Santa village in Rovaniemi, take a photo with a board where you have Santa and his Mrs., and the whles to put your face to them - please do that. After sauna it's so traditional to eat grilled sausage in Finland. Salad is good for some day time foods but sauna, sausage and beer is the best combo for evening relaxation.
