7:35 Kuukkeli is generally considered the forester's "friend". It is known for the fact that it appears quite quickly at campfires to beg for food scraps. The common belief is that the Kuukkeli is a lucky bird and the hunting luck of a person who kills it will disappear forever. In Finnish ancient belief, the hawk was also called the "bird of the soul" and it was believed that the forester's spirit moves to the hawk when he dies.

I'd guess the bird at 7:35 was kuukkeli, one of the most curious birds you can find out there.

Like someone said, "You can drink from basically every stream, river and lake". But if you're worried you can filter the water running it thru the coal from the wood your burning. And if that's not enough, you had that pan to boil it even before that. 🤷‍♂

This looks like a fun trip! I see you didn't do the famous mistake and go there after Juhannus. Man, I still have trauma for spending a week in Enontekiö for a confirmation camp just a couple of days after Juhannus almost 20 years ago. Jesus the amount of bugs in there.. Yikes. Not just mosquitos but blackflies too.. At evenings when looking outside of the windows you'd just see what looked like a grainy tv screen of probably billions of blackfiles. It was crazy.

No need to boil running water (streams, rivers) or spring water, if you happen to find it. Lakes are usually fine as well up north, but wouldn't be as certain. The bird was a kuukkeli. You can get them close to you with food. Sometimes they'll even land on your hand.

Just drink the water while in Lapland. Every stream, river and remote lake has as clean water as it gets. Less bacteria than in tap water in the Helsinki region.

In Finland we have these "everymans rights" / jokamiehenoikeudet or actually they just been changed to gender neutral "everyones rights" / joikaisenoikeudet. So you are allowed to camp even in private properties as long as you are not close to cabins or homes (like ~100m or so). Private owners are actually forced to allow that so they are not allowed to put any signs to forbid that or so...

This also applies for picking berries and mushrooms and so on. There is few exeptions like you are not allowed to pick anything from trees for example or pick up moss. Basically you can camp and gather as long as it doesn't leave any permanent changes.

hey dave! here is one "life hack" or free tip for you if you are going to travel a lot in finland... not sure how much there is water sources in lapland, should be some but at least in central finland there is a lot and anyone can go and fill your water bottles/tanks for free from the water sources, so instead of buying water from store, if you dont need anything else than water, i recommend to find water source, there is one right next to one of the busiest roads in 9-tie/highway 9 (2 lanes only tho...) at Hankasalmi. so it is good place to stop to refill your water bottles :) funfact: i have drank many times water literally from "ditch" or small pond and never got sick :)
THIS must be Finland's most BEAUTIFUL place... right?!
