"Eteenpäin!" sanoi mummo lumessa. I'm not sure if that's been one of the Finnish sayings you've already covered, but the elderly lady passing you on Saana proves it to be a real thing 😄

Am bit unfmiliar with English word "Fells" but I believe that it mean same as Finnish word "tunturi" and tunturi are soft-shaped mountain in Fennoscandia that reach above the tree line. So tunturi is thecnically mountain, but it have own word for it.
@Makapaa
@Makapaa 10 ай бұрын
All Fells are Mountains but not all Mountains are Fells. Like you said, the distinction is that round-ish shape. Some regional variations apply, but generally that's the deciding factor. Saana, Malla etc peaks in that north(eastern)-most Kilpisjärvi Wilderness Area are as close to "proper", sharp/rough Mountain as one can get in Finland. Not to say that those HUGE, sometimes alone-standing, Fells around Inari etc (in the "head" of Finland) aren't impressive but.. They just lack that certain something in raw roughness you'd expect from a Mountain.

On one friday mornig my friend and I got an idea to go hiking. We decided to go to Kilpisjärvi. In the afternoon we embarked to your journey. At 6 am, after 14 hour drive, we cooked some breakfast and took our backpacks and hit the trail. After 10-15 km hike we arrived to Saarijärvi cabin. Stayed there overnight and headed back. Drove back to southern Finland. ~2200 km drive + ~25km hiking in 72 hours. Still not the worst idea ever.

Measured up from Kilpisjärvi, Saana actually IS the highest mountain in Finland. After those steps there's still a long way to go. Last time I had to climb the steps twice, because when I got on top of them, I was hit by a blizzard (yes, in August!) and I had to turn back. You just have to be patient and persistent. One step at a time.

Cold and windy, temperatures might fall below zero degrees Celcius and it might be snowing, but usually you can still climb Saana without skis. There shouldn't be any flies or gnats anymore, which is a huge plus.

Next time you're there, I'd recommend taking the boat over to the triple border and doing the Malla trail. Ooor.. if you're feeling very adventurous, there's the Pältsan mountain valley over on the Swedish side of the border.

Three way border in itself is a bit boring. But if you take the boat there, you can start the ultimate hike to Paras (Parastind), about 17 kilometres. Paras is 1419 moh, 400 meters higher from sea level than Saana. Includes a dizzying exposure at the summit ridge.

The views are gorgeous during this time of year. I've only been there twice during new years at the university research station and that is a very different experience. Climbing Saana in thigh high snow with little to no light is not for the faint of heart but it is a great experience and the view is amazing if you time it right with the little light available. Lovely to see how it looks not covered in snow!

Hello. This old lady here says that you should do short two or three nights hiking there. Maybe Hossa is easy and very nice place to start, then Karhunkierros in Kuusamo. And when you have learnt more, you should go back to Kilpisjärvi and do little part of Kalottireitti.

We went there in high school hiking club and it was so cool and my first time ever there and hiking that much, but definitely worth it! When we got there, I remember we went straight to hiking to some route which was really long. We walked a bit more everyday, like 20km, 30km, 50km. I don't remember what was the end result how much we hiked. We slept along the way in tents, it was autumn so a bit cold but not snowy yet, and ruska was beautiful! We made food and we could drink the water from natural streams. We saw some reindeer while hiking. At the end of the trail, yhe bus came to get us. Then we went to Norway from there and we slept in some place with cottages if I remember well. We went to the city close by and an aquarium there. We went hiking to jäämeri and saw the ice wall or something. It was sooo cool! We slept in the bus on the way there and back. The driver had been on these trip with our teachers before and he was experienced wich was good because one morning we almost hot a pack of reindeer and had to stop abruptly. Someone was sleeping on two seats side ways and fell to the floor 😂 good wake up. And one evening we almost hit a deer or moose and thank hod for the driver's good reflexes! It was so much fun that I'd like to go again and again so that I'd know that place like my own pockets, but I'd also want to go to other places... There's so much to see already here in Finland that I wouldn't have to think seeing other countries yet 😂
