Finnish and Estonian share common roots, most of the vocabulary is the same - but! They have grown apart a few thousand years, so the words have changed meanings on both sides, so there happens funny and embarrassing coincidents when both speak their mother tongue. I'm a Finn, and I understand more than half from the written Estonian, but spoken very little, except TV news broadcast nearly half. Estonian has also dropped a lot of the final vowels of the words, and affects right away in the rhythm and melody of a language. The biggest difference is in the melody - Estonian sounds more German (there was long a German upper class), and Finnish more like old Swedish, the more west we go, the more it shows. Swedish in Lapland has somewhat similar melody with the Western Finnish, so the old Swedish. Well, the very northern Sweden was long Finnish and Sámi speaking, so their accent comes partly from Finnish. And in the Eastern border, Russia has affected Finnish some. In the Northern Finalnd Sámi languages affects Finnish. Those languages are very distantly raltedto Finnish, maybe separated 10 t yrs ago. So, maybe the German accent has affected Estonian more, so that Finnish and Latvian have kept the old accent much more, though Latvian and Lithuanian are Baltic not Finno-Ugric (FinU) languages, like Finnish and Estonian - that means thay are not even Indo-European (IE) languages, but the oldest language group in the North-Eastern Europe, and the very North-Western Siberia. But the Baltic language group was partly born in the contact of the FinU people with the IE:s. Their language is IE, but genetically tehy are related with the FinU: Lithunians have about 40 % FinU in them, Latvians 20-25, and Estonians around 33. Finns are about 70 %. Sámi nations gene beackground I don't know well: They were first more FinU than the Finns, who first mixed with the Scandinavians. Later it might be that at places some Sámi have more Scandinavian blood than Finns. Also, they have surprisingly much Central European, like German inheritance. And that's old also, not only fromWWII time, when there was a lot of Germans there. Russians came to the area later, they have mostly affected the Baltic countries in many cultural thigns, but not much in the melodies of the languages.

I don't think Finnish and Estonian have grown apart "a few thousand years." Their common parent language was spoken less than 2 thousand years ago AFAIK. I've seen a hypothetical reconstruction of what the language spoken in Estonia was like 700-800 years ago, and it resembled Finnish more than the modern-day Estonian does.

Estonian and Sami have always had their connections to Finland. It's not like they were completely separated for thousands of years or something
@timomastosalo
@timomastosalo 5 жыл бұрын
Izzard Clips Yes, It's not as straight forward as I put it. I also studied Finnic languages and Finnish, it was my major in the university. This was just a simple summary. Languags don't divide over night, it takes centuries or millennia. Except if there comes a strong linguistic (pronounce: politic) oppression, then couple of generations can do a lot. So there was still a lot in common in those times 700-800 years ago. But the process of growing apart started thousands of years ago, when the Baltic Finns divided into 3 branches. Of course they had contacts between themselves, but the sea was still the dividing element - the contacts were not daily. Those were Southern (Estonian, Livian, Vatyan etc.), Eastern (mainly Karelian, but now it's difficult to say how close were the more eastern Finnic languages to Karelian - now disappeared), and the Northern branch, which is closest to Western Finnish. Eastern Finnish dialects are the transition dialects from the (former) Northern Baltic Finnic dialects, and the Eastern ones. The border between Sweden and Russia finally decided what was to become Finnish, and what was to develope to Eastern Karelian (though that's not very homogenous).
@timomastosalo
@timomastosalo 5 жыл бұрын
TheSuomi True, Estonian and Sámi were never totally separated from Finnish. But my comment was a summary, so it has to be simple, to not make it an article. I focused on how they grew to become separate languages. Sámi departed first, mainly because of the difference in acquiring food. The Sámi were long mainly nomadic reindeer herders, though there were so called forest Sámi people closer to Finns. But they have slowly assimilated to Finns, are withdrown to live with their fellow Sámi in the north, were there aren't much forest or not at all. The nomads always look at the farmers to be somewhat funny dirt diggers, the Sámi still call the Finns 'Lantalaiset' = 'Landians, or Manurians', though most of them are not nomads anymore. In my comment that thousands of years meant the languages grew apart during those thousands of years, it didn't happen just one day. They had contacts, but mostly not daily. The Sámi moved sometimes far from the Finns, and different livelyhoods made them direct to different things in life. Estonians lived behind the sea, be it a narrowish bay, but 100 km of sea makes you think do you want to visit every week, in a small sail boat. So the languages drifted apart. And this started long ago for Sámi, because Finnish and Sámi are not as much mutually understandable as Estonian and Finnish, though the Sámi are neighbour to Finns, no sea between. But earlir there were vast wilderness between them, and first their was no horses to travel. And even that understanding between the Finns and Estonians is less than half for most people. Estonians sometimes understand more Finnish, because some of them have watched Finnish TV. Finns don't really follow the TV of the 'little sister'. Finns usually have heard some songs only.
@HertNiks
@HertNiks 5 жыл бұрын
Mate, Im Estonian and before I lived in Finland I understood nothing in Finnish. The languages are so far apart with an odd word or two being the same or similar. Finnish language is like a language of their own. They invent words that no other language uses. For example, sähkö, urheilu etc etc that are mostly the same in all other languages.

That was a fun watch, thanks!Sometimes I’m amazed how isolated the US is from popular music in Europe (sometimes also in Latin America). I mean, both Lordi, The Rasmus are quite known over here, and The Rasmus apparently has quite a few followers in Mexico. Lordi even won the Eurovision Song Contest with that song. How about checking out some other artists that have made their mark in Europe. Go see “Freestyler” by The Bomfunk MC’s, “Fairytale Gone Bad” by Sunrise Avenue, “Nemo” by Nightwish, “Chasing Highs” by ALMA and “Join Me” by HIM. Maybe you’ll find more new favourites.

It’s interesting you say that Finnish does not sound more like Estonian :) To me (in Finnish) Estonian sounds REALLY similar. In fact, the only way I can tell that someone is speaking Estonian and not Finnish, is that after a minute or so of listening I haven’t been able to form a sentence I understand in my mind from what they’ve said. Latvian, on the other hand, I don’t understand at all and identify as a foreign language as soon as I hear it. Fun to hear the impressions of someone who isn’t fluent in any of the three. ^_^ Really enjoyed this video. Will look forward to watching more :)

It was something I had never heard before. I would gush about it to my bff at school as soon as I saw her just to have her tell me she couldn't wait to tell me about the band lol.
