Johnny Cash definitely had a storied career.... and was a legendary character. His use of Hurt as a capstone of his work is such an excellent and powerful selection by Cash that I can't help but imagine that he searched for something that would serve as an appropriate penultimate conclusion of his career and life - and he definitely found it IMHO.

Everyone discusses Johnny's interpretation, his voice, in this cover, for obvious reasons. I heard the song long before I saw the video and I can tell you, the video adds almost all of the emotion to the song. Having known the song from NIN, I knew it was about a man spiraling out of control into addiction, and without the video for context, you just assume Cash is singing about the same thing. The song already had a meaning. It was the video that changed everything and turned it into a eulogy for himself. It's heartbreaking, but the video makers are never credited for the genius they added to the experience.

Good comment. Johnny was singing more in reflection of having gone through the addiction and the problems it caused within his relationships and life. Now too late to change any of it. I believe we, the listener, interpret it as a eulogy of sorts. Maybe it is, but I regard it as the same meaning, just from a different point in time

Trent Reznor first heard the cover. He describee his initial reaction with: "Hearing it was like someone kissing your girlfriend. It felt invasive." He described his reaction to the video he saw later with : "I wasn’t prepared for what I saw, and it really then, wasn’t my song anymore.”

This song was originally written & performed by "Nine Inch Nails". It was written about drugs & depression. But Johnny Cash's version is considered the best. His version is more about regret for past mistakes in life & realizing material things & fame mean nothing in the end. When the video was filmed in February 2003, Cash was 71 years old & had serious health problems. His frailty is clearly evident in the video. He died seven months later, on September 12 & his wife, June Carter Cash, who is shown gazing at her husband in two sequences of the video, had died on May 15 of the same year.

The most powerful thing in this song is in the end of the video when he closes the piano and creases it with his hands. To me it was his way of saying goodbye. I thing a lot of people miss this aspect of the video. Also everyone I know that has listened to this song has said they actual had tears running down their face. One of the most powerful songs that I've ever heard.

If you don't feel a little emotional at this I might not believe you're human. It's such a powerful performance. One of the things that's always been so interesting to me is how this and the original are almost like two different songs, but still so similar. The original NIN version is a young mans perspective, expressing all that passionate anger at a fresh wound, and Johnny's version is the measured acceptance of an old man reflecting on past mistakes. They could be bookends on the story of the life of the same man.

The emotion he brings to his performance is almost overwhelming at times, without being overdone or dramatic. I thought I would never listen to country music or any country artist. But one day I bought a comp CD of Johnny Cash songs, and… he opened that door for me. Johnny’s considered a major “crossover” artist, because he appeals to fans of a wide range of genres. There are people in the rock, metal, Goth, punk, country and more communities and cultures who love his songs. And to end one’s career… and even life… on such a powerful, emotional and incredible note, is always going to be amazing.

Me too. I was so dissappointed in myself for not listening to him until just after he died. He wasn't special in any technical measure, but he somehow made you feel the emotion of a song through his voice more deeply than any other singer that I can think of. He could make you cry, laugh, or smile with joy, whatever was called for in a song.

I heard this first a year ago, the reactor/analyst was someone that knew Johnny Cash so she had a lot of insight. By the time, she finished, I felt a kinship with him. The song seemed like Trent had written it just for him and by extension, all of us that are nearing his age, lost our loved ones to death, knowing we are now the frontline troops. His wife died just two months after this was completed and Johnny himself, a few months after her. His daughter, after seeing the video, said to him, "It sounds like you are saying goodbye." "I am." he said. When he closed the piano in this, it was the last time he played it. It truly is a masterpiece because the truth is all over it. 6 years ago, I lost my husband of 48 years, the love of my life, to cancer. I'm in good health but for quite a while, I didn't want to live without him. I'm just coming out of that now, hybridizing new daylilies and those that are worthy of registration will go down to the cancer center and let the patients name them. I'll register them and let them have a start or 2 of the plants they name. I have found new things to do which brings a peace within. This song by Johnny Cash was part of my change. Thanks to both Trent and Johnny. I do enjoy your reactions, you have a slightly different perspective and I will keep my eyes open for your next one. I think your reaction was very respectful and insiteful. My take on this version is that Johnny Cash is looking back on his life and realizing that all the accolades and the awards and everything related to "success" and money and all the material possessions is fleeting at best and what really counts, or at least should count, are the relationships with the people in our lives. And even those go away with time. In his seventies my father told me that I would find out that it wasn't the things I did in life I would regret but the things I didn't do. I got it, but it really didn't hit home until after his passing and I realized I had forever lost the opportunity to spend as much time with him as I should have due to my busy life and the pursuit of a career. I think Johnny's poignant message in this song is similar to my dad's message.

I found this note on the video in the past. Can't find it again to link it, so I reproduce it. ""Trent Reznor says about the Cash version of Hurt: "I'd been friends with Rick Rubin for several years. He called me to ask how I'd feel if Johnny Cash covered Hurt. I said I'd be very flattered but was given no indication it would actually be recorded. The idea sounded a bit gimmicky. Two weeks went by. Then I got a CD in the post. I listened to it and it was very strange. It was this other person inhabiting my most personal song. I'd known where I was when I wrote it. I know what I was thinking about. I know how I felt. Hearing it was like someone kissing your girlfriend. It felt invasive". Johnny played this song over 100 times before he recorded it. He called it "The best anti-drug song I ever heard." The song was released as a single in 2003. "One Hour Photo" director Mark Romanek said: “I begged Rick Rubin to let me shoot something to that track” being instantly enamored of the rendition, he offered to shoot the video for free. Universal eventually agreed to the music video, but with 71-year-old Cash’s health declining and being unwilling to stay long in the cold Tennessee weather as he was going on holiday to his ranch in Jamaica that coming Saturday, Romanek had only days to make the video and after scouting in Nashville, he decided upon Cash’s home and museum in Hendersonville, Tennessee, The House of Cash. "Arriving on Friday with no idea of what I was going to make" Romanek said. "I looked around the house and made a few suggestions of where we might film Johnny performing. I was making it up off the top of my head. Then I went to the House of Cash Museum and found it in total disrepair. There was no time to clean it up so I decided that I'd just film it, and Johnny, exactly as they were. He was no longer in his prime - he was fading and that was what I wanted to show. The place was in such a state of dereliction. That’s when I got the idea that maybe we could be extremely candid about the state of Johnny’s health - as candid as Johnny has always been in his songs. While I was filming the opening segment of Johnny playing guitar in his living room, his wife, June, came down the stairs and watched. What I like best about this cover, even though he went acoustic with it, he maintained the dissonant chords from the original. I don't think most people who would cover this song would have made that choice. But it really keeps you on edge through the whole song. It exposes a nerve so the song just hits harder. It was brilliant in the original, but with the added authenticity of this version, it's much more impactful here.

This song deepend when you know about Johnny Cash's struggles with alcohol and drug addictions in his earlier. I had a struggle with alcohol for over a decade and am now 20 years sober. But the phrase try to kill it all away, but I remember everything, stands out to my the most. Because itnis exactly the cycle. You cause pain to everyone around you, you are but the alcohol is only temporary. You hurt those who love you, you hang with those caught in the same addiction, but your memories only deepen. When you finally hit bottom and becaome sober you can see the damage you done. Only those who truly love you are still around. Your drinking buddies disappear your old friends have moved on, you remember all the pain you caused. You try not to get close you dont want to hurt anyone else. This song perfectly embodies what i feel at times and my hurt.

It was a fitting goodbye to the musical world. With his wife looking on as he records his final song. She was gone 6 months after the recording and Johnny 12 months. Your analyst of this is on point. When Johnny closes the piano that was the last time he played it. Shortly after both him and June were gone, his home caught fire, and everything you see in the video was lost.

Moi moi Anna, very touching and emotional song a few time before his death. You can feel the pain in this cover song and for Johnny Cash his last masterpiece. Therefore I would recommend also listening to the version of Hurt done by Douwe Bob and Ilse de Lange in a prison for women in the U.S.A. Available of course on this channel. This as a tribute to Johnny Cash who performed many times his song repertoire in prison environments. Both Douwe Bob (Slow Down) as well as Ilse (Calm After The Storm) participated in the contests of the European Songfestival the last decade and they did a great job. By the way, talking about this festival, my favorite song after all the contests in the past is still Sleepwalker by Nightwish with the great female background singer Ninni Poijaervi. One problem, the Finnish people found them the best 👍🤗🎸🎵during the selection, but they never participated thanks to the fantastic Finnish jury in 2000 😪👎👺👿.

I rewatch the Hurt video all the time, recommend (with warning to bring tissue) to people, and enjoy watching reaction videos for it (as long as they themselves are open and honest) It is amazing how many reactors who talk a lot through thier videos just shut down and listen to Johnny speak to their souls. Almost every one has "needed a moment". Your reaction was very enjoyable as I learned things while watching someone new discover the power of a Grand Master story musician weave his spell. Another wonderful reaction. Still love the mixture of Finnish and English. I was doing some work for a lawyer's office year's ago the day he passed. Turns out they were his estate lawyers. The office got very busy when it was announced he had passed. Right place, right time for me.

The history behind this video and the making of it was just tragic. This was the last video he ever recorded before he died. You could see how weak he was with his hands shaking. He was only able to play small parts himself for the video. He wife had encouraged him to keep singing because his music was his life. She was in much better health and was expected to live beyond his years, but tragically she died shortly after this video was shot (and I think before it was released). He lasted only about 6 months more before he passed away. The clips of his museum were as the film producer say them. Those record awards were smashed on the floor when they got there. There was also a bit of tension between him and his kids and he did struggle with drugs. This song was written and first preformed my Trent Reisner of Nine Inch Nails (NIN) off Downward Spiral. Hurt was really the only song I liked off of the album, but I did not care for the distortion and long lead in. He did a liver performance in 2010 that is his BEST version of the song. When asked if he could cover the song he said fine, but did not think Johnny Cash could pull it off. After he heard the cover he said he was impressed. The video was a masterpiece too. That picture on the lady was his mother who he cared for deeply but had passed away many years earlier and likely contributed to his drug problems. He had also been married before with I think 4 kids, but by the sound if it had little to do with them. In his older years his son ran his estate. The symbolism of the grand decadent meal and him pouring the wine over it with his shaking hands is so strong.

Anna, loved your music reaction, going back and forth between English and Finnish was really cool! My grandfather was from Finland and he died when I was really young so I barely remember him and I always wished I had learned about Finland. For some reason I've always been proud of being of Finnish heritage even though I couldn't explain to you why? I just always felt deep down that they are a very strong and resilient people. I've always been able to handle extreme cold weather.😊 In the early 2000's I had read about this Johnny Cash recording of this song and to be honest, I thought it was a joke. Johnny Cash was like a hero to me, growing up and I thought it was like some kind of goofy ploy to get back in the limelight or something. Sometime later I saw the video come on MTV and I turned it of immediately. I finally watched it for the first time when I came across your video and I have to admit that I cried like a baby. I'm also ashamed of how I first felt about this song when I first heard about it. Awhile ago I saw a interview with his daughter, Rosanna Cash talking about when he was invited to perform at the music festival in Glastonbury, Scotland and how she talked him out of going because she was afraid that the people there wouldn't get him or his music and was worried he'd make a fool out of himself. I thought you touched on everything important in this video. I rarely feel as much of an emotional impact as I get from this song. Really long careers are only achieved by the greatest singers as most find themselves less relevant to younger generations after youthful beauty and charisma are gone. Then here we have Johnny with such a masterful performance in the last year of his natural life that I believe has touched everybody young and old.

When Trent Reznor of Nine inch nails, (who wrote this song), says, "I'm going to have to find a new girlfriend, because this song is no longer mine"? You've officially stamped your DNA into a song, making it your own. THIS is how you cover another person's song, totally changing it, yet really changing nothing; Johnny Cash didn't take anything away from it, he added to it, while still showing respect for the original artist/writer, and his intent with the song. You did a great job in reviewing this- not an easy thing to do- when taking apart and dissecting a legend. Johnny Cash died.. within a year of this coming out, I believe it was- and only a few months after his wife, of 35 years. She was what was important to him. As was God, once he realized, as he sang the song- all the rest, was dirt. The reason the song is so hard-hitting? Because it's the TRUTH, realized, long past when it should have been. But still realized BEFORE, it was "too late".
