Korn’s debut, SOAD’s albums are fantastic, Deftones are their own genre, Limp Bizkit isn’t actually Nü metal, it’s lame rap core. Nü metal isn’t rapping over guitar work, sorry. That’s not Nü metal or else Korn wouldn’t be considered Nü. I don’t know why the difference between industrial metal, Nü metal and rap core are so hard for people to grasp. Primer 55 is not Nü metal, and they’re certainly in the same genre as alum Bizkit. How is Death Kill Logic, Coal Chamber, Mudvayne, or early Korn in any way rap? This is why I gatekeeping exists, because people don’t understand why subgenres exist. And apparently people understand this generalization is the reason Nü metal has gone out of style, because Limp Bizkit and Slipknot were considered a genre that they weren’t a part of. Slipknot’s first album has turntables and they have a synthesized or whatever, okay but they’re more hardcore than anything. This is like calling any metal with audible bass funk metal, just stop it, you’re being ridiculous

From my memory, Steal This Album! was supposed to be a "sequel" to Toxicity called Toxicity II. The songs on this record were essentially in demo sessions and recordings when it leaked to the masses. It kind of stunted the recording process, so they decided to clean up what they already had and push it out. It has a home in my heart as a good album but it is a very justified opinion to say it's bad.

Idk why, but I really really like Steal. It is... brighter than Toxicity? Idk, more lighthearted maybe. Has a handful of songs like Bubbles and Pictures, really upbeat and cheeky. But also intense emotional songs like Highway song and Streamline. And I just realized that it has the most harmonised vocals with Serj still being the undisputed lead singer. So, because I absolutely love harmonised vocals but think that Serj is still clearly the more gripping lead singer (Daron is still good, too, but Serj is more magnetic), so Steal has the best of both worlds there. Toxicity's highpoints are more towering, though, objectively speaking, I gotta admit. The whole album has a more serious tone, though, while Steal feels just fresher to me, like a cool breeze on a clear spring day

I'm not familiar with most of SOAD's discography, so can't comment on them, but the template of 'the big 4', which is used to discuss thrash metal, or grunge, I don't think really applies to nu-metal. For me, Limp Bizkit is the only band that retained the nu-metal formula for more than 2 or 3 albums before beginning to experiment, so it doesn't feel fair to rank albums by Korn or Linkin Park so low because they don't follow a nu-metal template. @@noahlenhard7010 to be fair I don't think Linkin Park really fits in either, except Hybrid Theory really was the blueprint for a lot of bands that followed in the genre. Same thing goes for Slipknot with their demo and first album. But I wouldn't go as far as comparing Linkin Park to hardcore hip-hop ... if we're speaking of at the time and not what it would later become like Run The Jewels, Linkin Park sounds nothing like Beastie Boys, DMX, or Onyx. SOAD was certainly quirky and zany for the sake of it but quirkiness was much of nu metal's appeal at the time for many people. Like, SOAD was there for those of us who were first exposed to Korn through Twist

SOAD are the only one of these 4 that I can listen to. I liked the first couple of Korn albums and saw them live a couple of times in those days, but soon bored of their sound. LP I liked .... but heard them everywhere, so over-saturated. I should possibly give their later product a listen. That other band I could never tolerate. Absolutely dreadful band .... with a cool guitar player.

I think the reviewer was born after 1990 - I grew up on new metal, born in 86, so I was right there for Jnco's and all the horseshit. When Linkin Park dropped, I thought it was sellout bullshit. As I got older, my friends who were born after 90 or so swore that Linkin Park were the beginning of nu-metal and the jeans got tighter. I swear there's a difference of like 3-5 years that determine who you thought were the purveyors of the genre simply based on age.

It's like they assume it's not a double album because they aren't in the same package. Heck, to fit the theme and the album names even more, the artwork on the CDs matches the inside artwork of the other one. So, if you were to put the disks into the matching case, you'd put it into the wrong one.

The song structures, the rhythm section, production, mix, and gigaton weight of the riffs on songs like “prison song”, “toxicity”, or “BYOB” are undeniable. I don’t listen to them for their lyrics any more than I do limp bizkit. To me, they are another on of those bands of the late 90s-early 00s, along with limp bizkit, creed, and RHCP that to me qualify as “S tier band, f tier vocalist”. If you ignore the whacky vocals, there are some great melodies and song structures with absolutely hall of fame worthy instrumentals.

Tbf; I thought The Path of Totality was an interesting idea that didn’t really work in practice. As a big fan of dance and electronic music in general, it’s always got me that apart from industrial metal, you don’t get many metal or metal-adjacent bands mixing it up with electronic and dance music, but you do with hip-hop.
@hatecubed9 ай бұрын
It's been really weird (good) to remember and come back to, e.g. 'Remanufacture' - just as an example - considering that I was into that band/album years before I was 'properly' interested in electronic music. After spending so much time in both 'camps', rediscovering some of these artists has been way fucking better than I could have ever imagined. (I cut bits out of my reply re: hiphop etc cos I'd never finish this post otherwise 😁)
@jonathanwebster70919 ай бұрын
@@hatecubed yeah; Remanufacture is a good example to me of an album that’s 50/50 both EDM and extreme metal. Like; usually when you hear bands mix metal or metal-adjacent music with EDM (like you get with most industrial metal bands), it’s like a little add on-the music is still ‘mostly’ metal/whatever, and the industrial noises, samples, synths and other elements are basically seasoning. I’m a big fan of early 90s breakbeat hardcore, happy hardcore, acid house, and gabba techno as well as metal in general, so that album to me had enough aspects of both that I really enjoyed it: less of a focus on the lyrics and vocals (something I’ve always liked about EDM), 4/4 beats, and more extensive use of samples. Another album in the same vein (that apparently was a big influence on Dino Cazares) was the second Prodigy album-that was a gateway into EDM for me. Their third album went a bit too much of a rock/punk/metal direction for my taste. Also; the soundtrack to the 1997 film ‘Spawn’ was another good one for me-the concept was an interesting one-various rock, punk and metal bands (including Slayer, RATM, Butthole Surfers and Atari Teenage Riot amongst others) teamed up with an EDM producer/group on each track.
@hatecubed9 ай бұрын
@@jonathanwebster7091 @jonathanwebster7091 hah, crazy - I feel like you told my story 😂 The most important ones for me being the Spawn soundtrack, The Prodigy (I can't remember if Experience or Jilted was my introduction, but Jilted is very high on my list), and Atari Teenage Riot, I think. Haven't ever known another metal fan to like happy hardcore (or at least admit it!) In terms of .. less happy .. hardcore, I was involved with a tour of Mark N (Bloody Fist) a decade or so ago here in Australia. I only just realised how surreal that is now haha. Sounds like you'd love Grist by Drumcorps, assuming you don't already know it :) I can't help but mention also, imo the most underrated (nu-) metal album with industrial etc elements is Spineshank - The Height of Callousness (the 'hits' are the low point...)
@jonathanwebster70919 ай бұрын
@@hatecubed I’m British; so happy hardcore is a big thing here, I’ve always liked it. I kind of look at it almost like an EDM version of thrash metal, or like a polar opposite of what black metal is doing atmosphere wise (what with it having plenty of major chord progressions, ‘happy’ themes and stuff about love). It’s often got connotations of being a ‘guilty pleasure’, even among dance fans (which I think is silly, no such thing as a guilty pleasure, it’s all just music fgs). Also at least in the 90s and early 2000s, here in the UK at least anyway, it had unwelcome associations with the whole ‘chav’ subculture (which again, I think is a bit daft). But yeah, musically I think of it like that, gabba techno too to some degree. I think what I really like about happy hardcore as well is that it has a sort of ‘retro’ vibe that is kind of reminiscent of the early 90s UK breakbeat hardcore scene musically-you know; the 4/4 drums, bright piano, ‘happy’ themes, chipmunk vocals, etc.-before it split into on the one hand trance, etc., and the other way into Jungle/Drum and Bass. And while I enjoy and listen to some Trance stuff, it’s a bit too ‘polished’ for my taste-I like that kind of rough around the edges sound you get with happy hardcore. I’ve never been a huge fan of jungle/Drum n Bass, I’ve tried getting into it but I just don’t get the appeal. So yeah. I was never a huge fan of Spineshank, no idea why. They were just one of those bands from that era that I didn’t get hugely into.
@jonathanwebster70919 ай бұрын
@@hatecubed and nooo not heard of Drumcorps, I’ll have to check that out, many thanks! Also, after I’d really got into MFTJG (and what’s also great about that album is that all the singles have extra non-album tracks, many of which are brilliant, so I collected those too), I got Experience too, and *that* was my real introduction to EDM, and especially early 90s breakbeat hardcore and eventually happy hardcore stuff. It was about the same time (we’re talking 2004/5) that I was really starting to get into extreme metal too-I’d heard Slayer and just got really into Thrash metal, and eventually (some, never really been a huge DM fan) death metal and black metal, as well as the more extreme doom bands. So I was kind of listening to thrash and black metal at the same time as I was getting into gabba techno and happy hardcore.
